Atypical gnathostomiasis-confirmed cutaneous larva migrans, Vietnam.

We reported a case of gnathostomiasis in a 42-year-old woman with an unclear history of eating high-risk foods and had a non-migratory skin lesion, negative serological testing and normal blood eosinophil counts. A diagnosis of gnathostomiasis was based on a live, third-stage Gnathostoma spinigerum larva that was randomly taken from the patient's skin lesion by herself. The presenting case report demonstrates challenges in correctly diagnose cutaneous gnathostomiasis even in endemic countries due to atypical skin lesions, negative serology testing and the absence of eosinophilia and thus, the …

Naturalistic Behavior: The Zebrafish Larva Strikes Back.

Two recent studies show that zebrafish larvae alternate between two behavioral modes: exploration and hunting. Both behaviors are structured on multiple time scales, and require the integration of internal and external cues to generate sequences of stereotyped swimming movements.

Mini review: Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans.

Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (HrCLM) is a parasitic skin disease caused by the migration of animal hookworm larvae in the epidermis. Since these larvae cannot penetrate the basal membrane of human skin, they remain confined to the epidermis and are unable to develop and complete their lifecycle. By consequence, HrCLM is a self-limiting disease. However, if not treated promptly, the skin pathology may persist for months. HrCLM is endemic in many resource-poor communities in the developing world. In high-income countries, HrCLM occurs sporadically or in the form of small epidemics. T…

Seroprevalence of human toxocariasis (visceral larva migrans).

A total of 455 patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The enrolled patients were subjected to a questionnaire (including sociodemographic and other risk factors) and thorough clinical examination was done for the patients. Sera were collected from patients and tested for anti-Toxocara IgG antibodies using ELISA. The overall anti- Toxocara seropositive was (7.7%). It was significantly higher than among the randomly selected 30 healthy controls. There were no significant differences between the seropositive and seronegative patients regarding age, sex, educatio

[Experimental ocular larva migrans infection in mice].

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the histologic alterations in the ocular globe of mice infected with eggs of Toxocara canis, during both the acut … emonstrated changes in the normal histology of the uvea and lens. In only two eyes were segments of larvae found in the retina, and in each instance there was no evidence of an inflammatory reaction around them. CONCLUSION: Most of the changes seen were not related to the presence of larval forms, suggesting they were due to the effect of excretion-sec …

Cutaneous larva migrans associated with Löffler's syndrome.

We describe a patient who was admitted to hospital after returning from a holiday in Thailand with coronary artery disease and ventricular tachycardia. As an incidental finding, the routine chest radiography showed migratory pulmonary infiltrates. A peripheral blood smear showed eosinophilia. Physical examination revealed multiple, slightly raised, erythematous, serpentine tracks on the buttocks. A clinical diagnosis of larva migrans was made, and the patient was treated with oral albendazole 400 mg on 5 consecutive days and a single dose of oral praziquantel 3600 mg. By the end of treatment, …

Severe hepatic involvement in visceral larva migrans.

Because of its anatomical position, the liver may be involved in many protozoan and helminthic gastrointestinal infections. Visceral larva migrans caused by Toxocara canis is rarely taken into account in adult patients with cholestatic syndrome, especially when liver disease is not associated with hypereosinophilic reaction. We report on a 74-year-old immunocompetent woman who presented with fever, bronchospasm, erythema nodosum, weight loss and progressive jaundice. A liver biopsy showed caseating granulomatous hepatitis with secondary portal fibrosis and paucity of interlobular bile ducts. A…

Visceral larva migrans and the hypereosinophilia syndrome.

This is a case of visceral larva migrans and hypereosinophilia syndrome with persistently elevated white blood cell count despite adequate medical therapy in a 4-year-old boy with leukocytosis and splenomegaly. Medical history included reactive airway disease and geophagia (pica). Serology for Toxocara canis revealed elevated IgG and IgM titers. Ophthalmologic evaluation ruled out ocular larva migrans. After 5 days of thiabendazole therapy, leukocytosis persisted, and a second course of anthelmintics was prescribed. Two weeks later, a decrease in leukocytosis was noted. Thiabendazole therapy w…

[2 cases of toxocariasis (visceral larva migrans)].

BACKGROUND: Different epidemiological studies have demonstrated that specific anti-Toxocara antibodies are detected in the serum of a high percentage of the Spanish population. But very few clinical cases of visceral larva migrans are being confirmed. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two cases of visceral toxocarosis, in two sisters, are described. In the first, the prevailing clinic was swelling of joints and upper respiratory tract symptoms; and asthma and cutaneous allergic manifestations in the second patient. Both cases presented with an elevated blood eosinophil count, high levels of total IgE and …

Cutaneous larva migrans due to Pelodera strongyloides.

A twenty-year-old landscape worker was evaluated for a widespread cutaneous eruption consisting of papules, pustules, and burrows. Cutaneous scrapings revealed live and dead larvae of a free-living soil nematode, Pelodera strongyloides. This is the third instance of human dermatitis due to this organism, and the first reported in an adult host.
