Effects of Exercise and Sports Intervention and the Involvement Level on the Mineral Health of Different Bone Sites in the Leg, Hip, and Spine: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

The current study analysed whether the osteogenic stimuli of exercises and sports have an independent effect on bone mineral density (BMD). Studies with a design having two different cohorts were searched and selected to distinguish the effect due to long-term involvement (i.e., athletes vs. non-active young with good bone health) and due to the planning of intervention (i.e., pre- vs. post-training) with exercises and sports. Moreover, only studies investigating the bone sites with a body-weight support function (i.e., lower limb, hip, and spine regions) were reviewed, since the osteogenic ef

The successful treatment of a Gustilo-Anderson type IIIc distal leg injury with a large bone defect in elderly patient with severe osteoporosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Gustilo-Anderson type IIIc tibial open fracture with large bone defects in elderly patients with severe osteoporosis is a rare injury that may be a challenging clinical scenario. CASE PRESENTATION: This study presents the case of a 68-year-old Japanese man who sustained a Gustilo-Anderson type IIIc open tibial fracture with a large bone defect. The patient had severe osteoporosis and the bone was contaminated; therefore, we determined that the bone could not be returned to the tibia. The patient underwent acute limb shortening and gradual lengthening with an Ilizarov external fixa

Trunk-to-leg-volume ratio is not associated with bone density or fracture risk in middle-aged adults: results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

UNLABELLED: Unlike a high body mass index or waist circumference, a high trunk-to-leg-volume ratio does not associate with a lower risk of osteopenia/osteoporosis at the femoral neck. While elevated TLVR showed a suggestive association with a history of wrist fracture in women, additional research is needed to confirm this suggestion. PURPOSE: Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) are commonly used to predict bone health, which is typically assessed via bone mineral density (BMD). Trunk-to-leg-volume ratio (TLVR), a relatively novel measure, predicts cardiometabolic outcomes, but

Rat Models of Partial-body Irradiation with Bone Marrow-sparing (Leg-out PBI) Designed for FDA Approval of Countermeasures for Mitigation of Acute and Delayed Injuries by Radiation.

The goal of this study was to develop rat models of partial body irradiation with bone-marrow sparing (leg-out PBI) to test medical countermeasures (MCM) of both acute radiation syndrome (ARS) and delayed effects of acute radiation exposure (DEARE) under the FDA animal rule. The leg-out PBI models were developed in female and male WAG/RijCmcr rats at doses of 12.5-14.5 Gy. Rats received supportive care consisting of fluids and antibiotics. Gastrointestinal ARS (GI-ARS) was assessed by lethality to d 7 and diarrhea scoring to d 10. Differential blood counts were analyzed between d 1-42 for the

A pilot study on a potential relationship between leg bone length and sprint performance in sprinters; are there any event-related differences in 100-m and 400-m sprints?

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between leg bone length and sprint performance in sprinters. The leg bone lengths in 28 100-m specialized sprinters and 28 400-m specialized sprinters were measured using magnetic resonance imaging. The lengths of the upper and lower leg bones were assessed by calculating the lengths of the femur and tibia, respectively. To minimize differences in body size among participants, both bone lengths were normalized to body height. The ratio of the tibial length to femoral length was calculated to evaluate the interaction between the lengths of the upp

Non-Union Treatment in the Foot, Ankle, and Lower Leg: A Multicenter Retrospective Study Comparing Conventional Treatment with the Human Allogeneic Cortical Bone Screw (Shark Screw®).

Addressing non-unions involves stabilizing the affected area through osteosynthesis and improving bone biology using bone grafts. However, there is no consensus on the optimal treatment method. This study aims to compare outcomes of non-union surgery using conventional treatment methods (metal hardware ± graft) versus osteosynthesis with the human allogeneic cortical bone screw (Shark Screw®) alone or in combination with a metallic plate. Thirty-four patients underwent conventional treatment, while twenty-eight cases received one or more Shark Screws®. Patient demographics, bone healing, time

[Primary shortening--secondary lengthening. A new treatment concept for reconstruction of extensive soft tissue and bone injuries after 3rd degree open fracture and amputation of the lower leg].

The main problem in major limb replantation--especially of the lower extremity--is an extensive bone- and soft-tissue loss. The traditional replantation concept tries to preserve the initial limb length; only a small shortening is accepted. To avoid a more extensive shortening, often insufficient debridement at the time of replantation is carried out. After successful revascularisation, bone and soft-tissue defects will be reconstructed according to the principles of staged reconstruction. Especially segmental nerve defects of more than one major peripheral nerve and severe skin and muscle los

Limb Salvage after Lower-Leg Fracture and Popliteal Artery Transection-The Role of Vessel-First Strategy and Bone Fixation Using the Ilizarov External Fixator Device: A Case Report.

Open traumatic lesion of the popliteal artery is relatively rare. Ischemia time longer than 6 h and severity of limb ischemia have been shown to be associated with an increased risk of limb loss. Severe local infection is critical in the presence of major soft tissue trauma or open fractures. We report the case of a young female who suffered a traumatic transection of the popliteal artery associated with an open fracture of the distal tibia and fibula managed by direct vessel reconstruction with an end-to-end repair and skeletal stabilization initially with half-pin external fixation, then rep

Comparison of the clinical outcomes between the modified free musculocutaneous flap combined with delayed bone reconstruction technique and the free fasciocutaneous flap combined with Masquelet technique for post-traumatic osteomyelitis of the lower leg.

OBJECTIVE: Post-traumatic osteomyelitis of the lower leg commonly involves severe infectious bone and soft tissue defects, posing significant reconstructive challenges and a high risk of infection recurrence. While both the free fasciocutaneous flap with Masquelet technique (FFCMT) and the modified free musculocutaneous flap with delayed bone reconstruction (MMDRT) have been described, their comparative efficacy remains unelucidated. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the clinical outcomes of FFCMT and MMDRT in managing such complex defects. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study inclu

Staged limb salvage of a Gustilo-Anderson type IIIC open distal tibial gunshot fracture using cross-leg pedicle flap and delayed intramedullary nailing with bone grafting: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gunshot injuries to the lower limb can cause severe damage to both bone and soft tissues, particularly when the injury occurs at close range. Open fractures of the tibia are especially difficult to manage because of the limited soft-tissue coverage and the high risk of infection, non-union, and other complications. Gustilo-Anderson type IIIC fractures represent the most severe form, as they involve arterial injury that requires urgent repair. Successful limb salvage depends on early debridement, restoration of blood flow, stable fixation, and reliable soft-tissue c

The effect of remobilisation on the extremity of the adult rat after short-term immobilisation in a plaster cast.

The one hind leg of adult male rats was immobilised for 4 weeks in a plaster cast. The cast was then removed and the leg was subsequently remobilised for 4 and 16 weeks respectively. Studies of the skeletal mass of the femur and the tibia from the immobilised leg showed that after 4 weeks of remobilisation there were still clear signs of osteoporotic changes of the bones as compared with the corresponding bones from control non-immobilised rats. After 16 weeks of remobilisation there were no esteoporotic changes detectable by the methods used.

Relationship of functional leg-length discrepancy to abnormal pronation.

The objective of this study was to determine whether a correlation exists between abnormal pronation and functional leg-length discrepancies. Visual assessment and a pelvic thrust maneuver were used to identify the functionally short leg in 56 indigenous Mexicans (20 males and 36 females; mean age, 33 years; mean weight, 59 kg; and mean height, 1.60 m). The Foot Posture Index was used with a modified stance position to identify the more pronated foot. The posterosuperior iliac spines were used to identify the "relative" position of the innominate bones. The raw data obtained from this study we

Avian long bones, flight and bipedalism.

Morphological, geometrical, chemical and mechanical characteristics of avian long bones are reviewed. Important differences exist between long bones of birds and mammals. Differences are also present in appendicular bones of birds, either between wing bones and leg bones or proximal (stylopodial) long bones and distal (zeugopodial) long bones. Special emphasis is put on pneumatization, in terms of both phylogenetic origin and geometrical and mechanical characteristics linked to it. Cortical thickness, bending strength and flexural Young's modulus were significantly lower in pneumatized bones t

[Primary controlled endolymphatic antibiotic therapy in traumatology and orthopedics].

The work analyses 55 cases of traumatic osteomyelitis of the leg bones, open fractures of the leg bones, and medial fractures of the femoral neck. Patients with medial fractures of the neck of the femur were treated by endoprosthesis after Mur-Kaplan. Endolymphatic antibiotic therapy was included in the complex of therapeutic measures in each group of patients. This method allowed suppuration of the postoperative wounds to be avoided and promoted in this manner rehabilitation of the patients.

Natural tibialization of fibula in non-union tibia: Two cases.

BACKGROUND: Non-union of tibia is known to be a common complication after fracture both bones of leg treated conservatively. During the course of natural healing, fibula usually unites early as it had more soft tissue attachment and vascular supply. Due to early union of fibula and absence of axial force across the tibia, it undergoes non-union. CASE CHARACTERISTICS: Two cases, a 32-year-old male and 65-year-old female treated conservatively for fracture both bones of leg long years back, presented to us with mild calf pain on and off. On radiological examination, there was non-union of tibia

Longitudinal models of long bone growth during adolescence.

Data from the Child Research Council (Denver, CO) were utilized to model longitudinal adolescent growth of the humerus, radius, femur, and tibia for 36 girls (10-16 years) and 33 boys (10-17 years). Multilevel modeling procedures were used to estimate variation, covariation, and the polynomial parameters necessary for generating growth curves. At age 10, long bone lengths for girls and boys are similar; by age 16, each of the boys' arm bones is about 20 mm longer and each of their leg bones is about 30 mm longer. Due to the earlier maturation of girls, the models show the length of each of the
