: The Great London Smog of December 1952 lasted five days and killed up to 12,000 people. The smog developed primarily because of extensive burning of high-sulfur coal. The health effects were both immediate and long lasting, with a recent study revealing an increased likelihood of childhood asthma development in those exposed to the Great Smog while in utero or during their first year of life. Subsequent pollution legislation-including the U.S. Clean Air Act and its amendments-have demonstrably reduced air pollution and positively impacted health outcomes. With poor air quality events like th

INTRODUCTION: Recent literature has explored the health and social implications of industrial workers who are involved in a variety of long-distance commute (LDC) work arrangements including fly-in, fly-out; bus-in, bus-out; and drive-in, drive-out. However, the role of an industrial health worker in caring for this special population of workers is poorly understood and documented in current literature. In Australia, the health role has existed primarily to meet minimum standards of safety legislation and carry out compliance activities. The combination of low social risk tolerance, increasing

More than 20 million people in the United States have a substance use disorder (SUD), increasing their risk for overdose (OD). Patients arriving to emergency departments (EDs) with OD typically require lifesaving interventions, but inconsistencies exist regarding further intervention and discharge instructions. The purpose of the current integrative review was to determine best care practices for patients presenting to EDs with an illicit drug OD. A literature search included the databases PubMed, EBSCO Host, ProQuest Health and Medicine, and Google Scholar. Thirty-five articles outlined inter

PURPOSE: Polypharmacy, medication errors and adverse drug events are frequent among nursing home residents. Errors can occur at any step of the medication use process. We aimed to review interventions aiming at optimization of any step of medication use in nursing homes.
METHODS: We narratively reviewed quantitative as well as qualitative studies, observational and experimental studies that described interventions, their effects as well as barriers and enablers to implementation. We prioritized recent studies with relevant findings for the European setting.
RESULTS: Many interventions led to

INTRODUCTION: The Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and later caused a severe health crisis, causing massive disruptions to most healthcare systems worldwide. During this pandemic period, the structure of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) activities changed fast. It was observed that the mental health of ICU nurses reached levels of extreme clinical and psychological concern. This paper aims to shed light on how COVID-19 affected ICU nurses' mental health.
METHODS: A literature review of articles published on this topic from January 2020 to Dec

Restrictions on sale of oral contraceptives (OCs) in Australia are based on their classification as Schedule 4 poisons; as such they are "restricted substances" and obtainable only on a prescription. In general only a medical practitioner can prescribe OCs and only a chemist or a licensed person can dispense them. Doctors at Family Planning Clinics and Hospital Outpatient Departments may also supply OCs. There are arguments for and against a relaxation of restrictions controlling the distribution of OCs, many of these views were stated in submissions to the Royal Commission on Human Relationsh

The status of undocumented immigrants and current immigration legislative proposals are the subject of heated debate with both political and economic implications often overshadowing the needs of undocumented victims of abuse. This article will focus on the plight of undocumented women and children who are victims of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse perpetrated by their spouse or parent who is a citizen of the United States (by birth or naturalization). We will review the magnitude of this problem, provide a brief history of current legal protections and the potential for the U-Visa as a

Contact with human blood is one of the vital issues concerning occupational exposure to biological factors. The fact that pathogens that create high health risk may be transmitted by blood must not be ignored. Considering the problem of biological exposure at workplace, HIV, HBV and HCV are recognized as the most essential viruses. Health care workers belong to the occupational group characterized by the most frequent contact with blood. Infections induced by blood borne pathogens are mostly observed among nurses, laboratory personnel and physicians. In the European Union countries, the USA an

BACKGROUND: A 3-year pilot program to expand the role of nurse practitioners (NPs) in the Washington State workers' compensation system was implemented on July 1, 2004. This legislation authorized NPs to independently perform most functions of an attending physician.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of this legislation by examining medical costs and disability outcomes for injured workers in the care of NPs benchmarked against those in the care of primary care physicians (PCPs).
RESEARCH DESIGN: This observational study compared NPs and PCPs in the role of attend

The highest organ donation rate in Chile was 10 donors per million population in 2017, which is low compared with other countries. Local experts attribute the low rate to population's lack of education and generosity, distrust in procurement/allocation system, inadequate legislation and insufficient encouraging campaigns, although without much empirical support: None of the countries from the OECD is also an organ donation leader. Latin Americans who migrate to Spain improve their donation rates, suggesting that the possible explanation is trust in the system where personalities do not have fa

BACKGROUND: The operating room is a high-risk setting for occupational sharps injuries and bloodborne pathogen exposure. The requirement to provide safety-engineered devices, mandated by the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act of 2000, has received scant attention in surgical settings.
STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed percutaneous injury surveillance data from 87 hospitals in the United States from 1993 through 2006, comparing injury rates in surgical and nonsurgical settings before and after passage of the law. We identified devices and circumstances associated with injuries among surgical team m

BACKGROUND: Euthanasia is performed on occasion, even on newborns, but is highly controversial, and it is prohibited by law and condemned by medical ethics in most countries.
AIM: To characterise and compare the judgments of lay persons, nurses, and physicians of the acceptability of actively ending the life of a damaged newborn.
METHODS: Convenience samples of 237 lay persons, 214 nurses, and 76 physicians in the south of France rated the acceptability on a scale of 0-10 of giving a lethal injection in 54 scenarios composed of all combinations of 4 within-subject factors: gestational age of

OBJECTIVE: In 1987, the Omnibus Reconciliation Act (OBRA) called for a dramatic overhaul of the nursing home (NH) quality assurance system. This study examines trends in facility, resident, and quality characteristics since passage of that legislation.
METHODS: We conducted univariate analyses of national data on US NHs from 3 sources: (1) the 1985 National Nursing Home Survey (NNHS), (2) the 1992-2015 Online Survey Certification and Reporting (OSCAR) Data, and (3) LTCfocUS data for 2000-2015. We examined changes in NH characteristics, resident composition, and quality.

In Italy, the Family and Community Nurse (FCN) was officially recognized with Legislative Decree 34/2020 and redefined by Ministerial Decree 77/2022. The introduction of the FCN has been inconsistent across the nation, leading to fragmented experiences and challenges in fully integrating the role into the healthcare system. Based on Cohen's hermeneutic approach, this phenomenological study explores the lived experiences and meaning of being an FCN in Italy. Semi-structured interviews were conducted from December 2023 to June 2024. Interviews were transcribed, read in-depth and analyzed. Thirty

Sepsis is one of the leading causes of mortality in the inpatient setting. Despite evolving clinical definitions, regulatory misalignment between Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) SEP-1 measures and Sepsis-3 guidelines creates barriers to optimal care. Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) are leaders who promote protocol adherence and policy advocacy. This policy analysis explores how regulatory challenges affect sepsis management and highlights the role of APRNs as change agents in evidence-based practice. A policy analysis was conducted by reviewing CMS SEP-1 regulations,

BACKGROUND: Conventional nursing homes in Singapore adopt an institutional and medical model of care with a focus on safety and risk management. As such, less regard is placed on upholding the dignity and autonomy of the resident, which compromises quality of care and the well-being of the resident. Today, person-centred care (PCC) has become synonymous with high-quality care that sustains the well-being and personhood of the care recipient.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the model of PCC adopted by a nursing home, Apex Harmony Lodge (AHL), with a logic model and evaluate outcomes on residents' well

AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To identify evidence-based reports on the epidemiology of head injuries to develop guidelines for primary prevention activities by public health nurses.
BACKGROUND: Head injury is a major cause of morbidity, mortality, disability and lost years of productive life in the population under 40-45 years of age. Prevention strategies such as legislation on car seat belts, drink driving and health and safety at work have led to reductions in its incidence. As well as the personal repercussions for those injured and their families, there are resource implications for healthcare pr
