Parental Anger and Trajectories of Emotional Well-Being from Adolescence to Young Adulthood.

This study assesses the relationship of parental anger on children's anger and self-derogation from adolescence to young adulthood. We examine a life-course perspective and incorporate theories of emotion regulation and self-referent behavior. Using structural equation models and hierarchical growth curve models with the Kaplan Longitudinal and Multigenerational data, the results indicate that parental anger leads to anger in adolescence, supporting theories of learning through modeling in adolescence. In young adulthood, as predicted by self-referent behavior theory, parental anger contribute

Using an oral history approach to understand perspectives of intergenerational trauma in African American women.

This brief report explores how African American women describe the intergenerational transmission of trauma and its perceived influence on stress and cardiometabolic health. Using an Oral History approach, semi-structured interviews were analyzed from participants in the parent HARMONY study. Analytic themes spanned work-life imbalance, medical racism, hypervigilance, reproductive autonomy, and physical safety. Women described balancing "controlled emotions" and "controlled actions" to navigate relationships and maintain bodily control. Although findings are preliminary and non-generalizable,

The Last 2000 Days: Thou shouldst not have been old till thou hadst been wise. Shakespeare (King Lear).

This essay is an exploration of an extended period of the last 2000 days of anticipated mortality from the perspective of an aging gerontologist. The last 2000 days come at the end of what has come to be referred to as the Third Age (Silva, L. R. (2008). [From old age to third age: The historical course of the identities linked to the process of ageing]. História, ciências, saúde-Manguinhos, 15: , 155-168. doi:10.1590/S0104-59702008000100009). Pediatric andrology: bridging pediatric urology and reproductive medicine.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Andrological disorders, including male infertility, hypogonadism, and sexual dysfunction, are often managed in adulthood despite their origins in early life. This review proposes the emerging concept of 'pediatric andrology', which integrates pediatric urology, endocrinology, and reproductive medicine, and aims to highlight its clinical significance from a life-course perspective. RECENT FINDINGS: Growing evidence suggests that common andrological conditions such as varicocele, cryptorchidism, and Klinefelter syndrome originate in childhood and have long-term implications f

Modeled health economic and equity impact on dental caries and health outcomes from a 20% sugar sweetened beverages tax in Australia.

Dental caries is the most prevalent oral disease across the life course. This study modeled the population health and economic impact of a 20% sugar sweetened beverages tax (SSB) for preventing dental caries compared to no intervention (societal and healthcare perspective). A cost-effectiveness analysis according to quintiles of area-level socioeconomic disadvantage was performed for the 2020 Australian population (0-100 years old) using a closed cohort Markov model. A qualitative assessment of implementation considerations (e.g., acceptability, equity, sustainability) was undertaken. Health o

Programming and reproductive functioning.

Here, we explore the influence of fetal programming and early life exposures on lifelong reproductive health through modification of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. A range of programming issues are considered with examples from the literature demonstrating that environmental or nutritive exposures have a crucial role in reproductive performance, fetal growth, postnatal development and reproduction-related disease risk. We pay particular attention to recent research on associations between indicators of fetal and postnatal growth and the etiology of polycystic ovary syndrome in women.

Gendered Racial Microaggressions and Black Women's Mental Health: Does Life Course Stage Matter?

Gendered racial microaggressions refer to subtle, yet psychologically injurious, interpersonal experiences rooted in racial and gender oppression. As a manifestation of gendered racism, Black women commonly report such experiences, yet this research primarily focuses on younger (e.g., college-attending) adults. Whether gendered racial microaggressions are most salient at specific life course stages (i.e., emerging versus older adulthood) remains unclear. Drawing from intersectionality, social stress, and life course perspectives, this study investigated whether life course stage (e.g., emergin…

Do Swedish universities educate future doctors and pharmacists about the environmental impact of pharmaceuticals?

OBJECTIVES: Residues of pharmaceuticals, originating from production, distribution or consumption, reach the environment where they have negative consequences on ecosystems. Educating future physicians and pharmacists could promote more environmentally friendly decisions throughout the life-cycle of pharmaceuticals. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to describe how pharmaceuticals in the environment was integrated into Swedish universities' medicine and pharmacy educations. METHODS: The study was conducted November-December 2022 and consisted of two parts; i) a review of program curri

Quality of Life in Children with Prader-Willi Syndrome and the Impact of the Disease on the Functioning of Families.

Objective: Prader−Willi (PWS; OMIM#176270) syndrome is a clinically distinct genetic disorder, caused by an abnormality in the 15q11-q13 region, referred to as the critical region. One of the most popular concepts existing in modern sciences, not only within psychology, but also in the aspect of all sciences that are related to human life and its course, is the quality of life (QoL). Though it is known that health-related quality of life in children with PWS can be reduced, less is understood about the impact on the family. We aimed to identify factors related to the quality of life of childre

Human reproduction and health: an evolutionary perspective.

According to life history theory, increased investment in reproductive function (physiology and behaviour) at different times throughout the life course affects the risk of many diseases and, ultimately, longevity. Although genetic factors contribute to interindividual and interpopulation variation in reproductive traits, the dominant source of variability is phenotypic plasticity during development and adult life. Reproductive traits in both sexes evolved sensitivity to ecological conditions, as reflected in contemporary associations of hormone concentrations with geographical setting, nutrit

Breaking the Taboo: Sexual Assault in Late Life as a Multifaceted Phenomenon-Toward an Integrative Theoretical Framework.

Sexual assault (SA) in late life has been receiving growing attention over the past two decades. It is directed primarily against older women and has been the least frequently reported form of abuse. Despite the growing awareness and body of knowledge on this phenomenon, the theoretical framework is still limited. Therefore, the aim of the present article is to suggest a theoretical conceptualization of the multifaceted phenomenon of sexual assault against women in late life (SAWLL). This conceptualization has been developed through several stages: (a) identification of three grounded fields o

[Revisiting the Forsdahl-Barker hypothesis].

The hypothesis about the influence of the environment in early life for later health and development has been the basis for several hundred studies over the last two decades. Despite some diverging results in different studies and methodological shortcomings, including selection and confounding from socio-economic and other factors, there seems to be substantial evidence to the effect that the environment in early life is essential for later health and development. The association of low birthweight and risk of cardiovascular disease later in life is the most consistent finding, though the cau

Management of Periprosthetic Joint Infection: What Has Happened Over the Last Few Years?

The undesirable burden periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) inflicts on patients and the healthcare system is increasingly acknowledged. The strenuous course of treatment required to manage PJI negatively affects patients' quality of life and results in an increased demand for physical, psychological, and socioeconomic support. With total joint arthroplasty set to become one of the most frequently performed elective surgical procedures in North America, further advancement on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of PJI is essential.1 This chapter presents recent findings from the scientifi

Therapy discharge becomes part of the life story.

Despite great strides in the life-participation approach to aphasia therapy and the arduous work of several therapists to include patients in the decision-making and goal-setting process of therapy, the patient's direct perspective on the experience of treatment is seldom portrayed in academic journals. In the current article, the voices and different agendas of a stroke survivor with aphasia, her speech-language therapists, and an aspiring qualitative researcher are discussed by means of intertwined narratives, dialogues, and discourses. During an in-depth interview process, the researcher he

Life events and panic disorder/agoraphobia.

A patient-rated checklist adapted from the Psychiatric Epidemiology Research Interview was used to assess frequency and desirability of life events in the 12 months preceding an index evaluation of a large sample of patients with a DSM-III diagnosis of panic disorder or agoraphobia with panic, on average 12 years after onset of illness. A total of 1,360 events were reported; 25% were considered most undesirable, whereas 22% were estimated to be most desirable. Negative life events were predominantly health-related issues and interpersonal conflicts. Making new friends, having significant succe

From PCOS to PMOS: reframing the clinical pathway around insulin sensitivity and weight-neutral metabolic risk.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous condition associated with reproductive, metabolic, pregnancy, and psychological morbidity across the life course. Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) was recently proposed through a multistep global consensus process, with implementation across guidelines and health systems still under way. This Perspective argues that the clinical value of the naming proposal will depend on whether it redirects care beyond ovarian morphology and body size. Insulin resistance can serve as an actionable management hub linking reproductive endocrine
