Diagnosis and histopathologic prognostication of canine melanocytic neoplasms: A consensus of the Oncology-Pathology Working Group.

One of the primary objectives of the Oncology Pathology Working Group (OPWG) is for oncologists and pathologists to collaboratively generate consensus documents to standardize aspects of and provide guidelines for veterinary oncologic pathology. Consensus is established through review of relevant peer-reviewed literature relative to a subgroup's particular focus. In this article, the authors provide a critical review of the current literature for the diagnosis of, and histopathologic prognostication for, canine cutaneous and oral/lip melanocytic neoplasms, suggest guidelines for reporting, pro

Topical 5% Imiquimod Sequential to Surgery for HPV-Related Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Lip.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common neoplasms affecting the oral cavity and the face. Its more differentiated forms may be associated with human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. CASE REPORT: In this paper, we report the case of an 86-year-old patient with a well-differentiated SCC of the lower lip associated with HPV treated with surgery with a non-complete histological resolution. Imiquimod 5% cream was applied on the surgical scar once a day for two weeks and then once a week. Two years after SCC removal, no relapse has occurred. CONCLUSIONS: Topical imiquim

Labial metastasis of renal neoplasia - A diagnostic challenge.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous spread of solid visceral metastasis is very unusual presentation, usually in breast, lung, colon, ovarian carcinomas, and malignant melanoma. Less than 5% of cases of cutaneous spread are from renal neoplasms. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present the case of a 48-year-old woman with a large lower lip tumor whose anatomopathological analysis of the lesion led us to identify a Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma (ccRCC). DISCUSSION: The clinical manifestations of the ccRCC can be mild, generating a late diagnosis through metastasis of primary neoplasia. Their presentations can

Gingival plasma cell granuloma.

Plasma cell granuloma is a rare reactive lesion composed of polyclonal plasma cells. It manifests primarily in the lungs, but may occur in various other anatomic locations like the oral cavity. Intraoral plasma cell granulomas involving the tongue, lip, oral mucosa and gingiva have been reported in the past. This case presents a 54-year-old female with chronic periodontitis and mandibular anterior gingival overgrowth treated by Phase I therapy (scaling and root planing) and excisional biopsy. Histological examination revealed inflammatory cell infiltrate containing sheets of plasma cells. Immu

A Rare Case of Oral Mucosal Amelanotic Melanoma in a 77-year-old Immunocompromised Man.

Primary mucosal melanomas are rare neoplasms that occur in the mouth, esophagus, nasopharynx, larynx, and anogenital mucosa. Mucosal melanomas are rare, accounting for approximately one percent of all melanomas. Of the mucosal melanomas that occur in the head and neck, oral mucosal melanomas compose approximately 25 percent. Here, we present a case of an amelanotic oral mucosal melanoma of the mucosal lip in a 77-year-old male patient with a history of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and multiple basal and squamous cell carcinomas. The patient presented with a pink, nonpigmented, pedunculated mass on t

Lack of promoting ability of snuff in rats initiated with 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide.

In an experiment to evaluate the carcinogenicity and promoting capacity of snuff, a reservoir was created in the lower lip of male Sprague-Dawley rats. Groups of 30 rats were treated with snuff only (twice a day on five days a week), propylene glycol (solvent) three times weekly for four weeks, painting of the hard palate with 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide (4-NQO) three times weekly for four weeks followed by snuff, 4-NQO only for four weeks, or cotton pellets only (twice a day on five days a week). The experiment was continued up to 108 weeks. High levels of tobacco-specific nitrosamines were foun

Metastasis of Renal Cell Carcinoma to the Mandible.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common tumor of the kidney. Although RCC often metastasizes to other organs, metastasis to the head and neck region is rare, and metastasis to the mandible is very unusual. Given the fact that metastasis of primary neoplasms is not always predictable, it is essential to rule out metastatic carcinoma in jaw lesions. We herein report a rare presentation of metastasis of RCC to the mandible, in which the metastatic lesion in the oral cavity was found first, followed by the primary lesion, in a 22-year-old girl who suffered from pain in the left temporomandib

Pleomorphic adenoma: a rare presentation in buccal salivary gland with extensive squamous and mucous metaplasia.

Pleomorphic Adenoma (PA) is the most common salivary gland tumor and accounts for about 60% of all salivary gland neoplasms. Intraorally, the hard palate is the most common presenting site (50-60%) followed by upper lip (15-20%) and rarely buccal mucosa (8-10%). Histopathologically, PA shows diverse morphology resulting from amalgamation of cellular and stromal components. The PA may show changes in the stromal and epithelial components, such as sebaceous, lipocytic and oncocytic metaplasia. A rare characteristic of PA is to show extensive squamous and mucous differentiation which poses diagno

Cancer Incidence Among Hardmetal Production Workers: The Swedish Cohort.

: The cancer incidence was determined for 3713 workers from three plants from 1958 to 2011. The exposure measures were ever/never exposed, duration, cumulative, and mean cobalt concentrations. The incidence of all malignant neoplasms was increased at one plant, but standardized incidence ratio (SIR) was 0.96 for all workers. Lung cancer incidence was increased for all workers, SIR 1.38 (1.01 to 1.85). The lung cancer incidence was associated with shorter employment time and showed no exposure-response. There was decreased incidence for skin cancer. Increased lip cancer incidence found at one of

Synchronous invasive squamous cell carcinoma and clear cell adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix: a different human papillomavirus status.

BACKGROUND: A multiple primary invasive carcinoma of the cervix is a rare condition and is seldom composed of squamous cell carcinoma and clear cell adenocarcinoma. CASE: A 47-year-old woman presented with contact bleeding. The anterior lip of the cervix revealed a 2.0-cm protruded mass. Preoperative pathological and imaging studies demonstrated the squamous cell carcinoma of the exocervix alone. Radical hysterectomy was performed on the diagnosis of stage 1B cervical cancer. Histological examination of the specimen manifested a coexisting invasive clear cell adenocarcinoma in the endocervix.

Two Time Point Analysis of the Change in Risk and Aging Factors for Major Cancers: A 10-Year Longitudinal Study in China.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the change in risk and aging factors with a two time point analysis for major cancers to assess supportive strategies. METHODS: The 2004 and 2015 mortality statistics in China were accessed. The standardized mortality rates of the two periods were used to calculate the ratio of change (RC) value to assess the risk of death associated with time (social development with time) for cancers. The role of age in mortality with time was evaluated by the interaction between time and age using a Poisson regression. RESULTS: In ascending order of RC, the factors were uterus; othe

C-kit expression in canine mucosal melanomas.

The c-kit receptor is responsible for transmission of promigration signals to melanocytes; its downregulation may be involved in malignant progression of human melanocytic neoplasms. Expression of this receptor has not been examined in normal or neoplastic melanocytes from dogs. In this study, 14 benign dermal and 61 malignant mucosal melanocytic tumors were examined for c-kit (KIT) expression. Sites of the mucosal melanomas were gingiva (not further specified; n = 30), buccal gingiva (n = 6), soft palate (n = 4), hard palate (n = 5), tongue (n = 7), lip (n = 6), and conjunctiva (n = 3). Reconstruction with facial artery musculo-mucosal flap (FAMM.F) after resection of upper lip pleomorphic adenoma: Case report.

INTRODUCTION: Although pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common neoplasm of both minor and major salivary glands, its presence in the buccal surface of upper lip is rare. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 70-year-old male presented with a chief complaint of recent rapid growth of a mass in the buccal aspect of the upper lip. A well-circumscribed mass measuring 3 × 2 cm with intact overlying mucosa without regional lymphadenopathy was evident. Core needle biopsy report was suggestive of PA. Complete excision of the tumor was performed. The defect was large and primary closure was not possible. Recons

Persistent Hemorrhagic Lip Crusts as the Presenting Sign of Pediatric FIP1L1-PDGFRA-Positive Hypereosinophilic Syndrome: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

FIP1-like-1-platelet-derived growth factor receptor-α (FIP1L1-PDGFRA)-positive hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) is a rare myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by persistent eosinophilia and occurs predominantly in middle-aged adults. We report a 15-year-old boy with FIP1L1-PDGFRA-associated chronic eosinophilic leukemia who initially presented with persistent hemorrhagic crusts on the lower lip, an uncommon mucocutaneous manifestation resulting from thrombotic aggregates of eosinophil granule proteins. This case is followed by a systematic literature review of pediatric FIP1L1-PDGFRA-posi

Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Lower Lip; A Rare Case Report.

Solitary Fibrous Tumor (SFT) is a rare benign neoplasm primarily associated with the pleura. However, it has also been identified in diverse locations, including the skin, deep soft tissues, genitourinary system, gastrointestinal tract, and the head and neck region, including the oral cavity. There is no gender predilection for SFT of the oral cavity and it can occur at any age. We herein present a case of SFT on the lower lip of a 19-year-old male patient and describe our diagnostic approach. The histopathological findings showed typical features of SFT with immunoexpression of CD34, CD99, BC

[Epidemiology of malignant neoplasms of the respiratory and upper digestive tract in Austria].

Between 1981 and 1985 the incidence of malignant tumours of the buccal cavity and mesopharynx, the larynx and hypopharynx and of the oesophagus in males was higher in the mainly rural Burgenland and Lower Austria than in Vienna. In lung tumours a slight urban-rural gradient tended to level out (Tables 1-4). In women, the cancer incidence on all locations showed an urban-rural gradient, steeper in the buccal cavity and mesopharynx, in the larynx and hypopharynx and in the oesophagus than in lung tumours (Tables 1-4). Cancer incidence in the nasal and paranasal cavities, middle ear, epipharynx,
