We review the recent literature examining lipid changes during stressful experiences, and the psychological and constitutional differences that influence lipid levels at rest and that may modulate lipid response to stress. Mild forms of chronic or episodic stress are apparently not associated with alterations in lipids and lipoproteins, but severe forms of real or perceived stress do appear to alter lipid levels. In the present study, we demonstrate that human stratum corneum contains covalently bound lipids accounting for 1.4% of the dry weight of the tissue. The major component (53.3% of the total by weight) is a ceramide (CER-A) consisting of 30 through 34-carbon omega-hydroxyacids amide-linked to sphingosine. Lipids in platelets of a patient with primary thrombocythemia were analyzed. Main neutral and acidic glycosphingolipids were globo-series and hematoside (GM3), respectively. In addition, galactosylceramide was found for the first time in human platelets. This glycosphingolipid contained a considerable amount of hydroxy-fatty acids. The changes in blood cholesterol, triglycerides, total lipids and lipoproteinograms were examined in 40 women with hirsutism compared to 40 normal women of similar ages as control. The results show a significant increase in cholesterol, triglycerides and total lipids in hirsutism. The purpose of this work is to review the arguments which support the role of mixed micelle formation in the biliary secretion of lipids. These arguments are derived from in vitro physicochemical studies and from results obtained in vivo during biliary drainage in animals and in man. They show that, for the essential, mixed micelle formation between lecithins, cholesterol and bile salts can explain the biliary lipid secretion. The hypocholesteremic effect displated by the Japan Sea trepang is shown. The experiments were carried out on rabbits with hypocholesteremia caused by fasting. Total cholesterol, beta-lipoproteids, lipoid phosphorus, total phospholipids and the cholesterol/phospholipids ratio were determined in the blood of hypercholesteremic animals. The introduction of total trepang lipids to the hypercholesteremic fasting rabbits resulted in normalization of the lipids metabolism, this being indicative of the favourable effect produced by such lipids.

Pyridoxine deficiency produced in rats during the period of development of the central nervous system resulted in a decreased incorporation of (1-14C) acetate into total lipid extracts of brain. It also resulted in a uniform decrease in the incorporation of the labeled precursor into the cholesterol, glycolipid and phospholipid fractions of brain. Aging drives molecular changes that impair cellular and tissue function. Lipids are central to membrane structure, signaling and energy storage, yet their remodeling during aging remains unclear. Here, using cross-species, multi-tissue lipidomics, we identify elongation of lipid acyl chains as a conserved hallmark of aging across mice, Caenorhabditis elegans, Drosophila and humans.
