BACKGROUND: Transrectal ultrasonography is the best technique for evaluating the ventral aspect of the lumbosacral and sacroiliac regions yet this diagnostic technique does not always lead to a final diagnosis of back pain in horses.
OBJECTIVES: To describe anatomical variations and acquired pathological bony changes (APBCs) in the lumbosacral and sacroiliac regions detected by ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT) examinations on specimens. We hypothesised that age, body mass, previous use and anatomical variations may be correlated with the presence and/or severity of APBCs.

BACKGROUND: Presence of heterotopic dysplastic renal tissue in the lumbosacral region is an extremely uncommon condition.
CASE REPORT: We report the first case of diastematomyelia associated with ectopic renal tissue. A 10-month-old male child presented with lipomeningomyelocele associated with spina bifida in the lumbosacral region, and the lipoma was excised. Imaging of the spine at 5 years of age showed spina bifida, bony diastematomyelia, lipomeningomyelocele and a small intraspinal cystic lesion. The boy was then operated upon at the age of 5 years, and histopathological examination of t…

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 12-year-old 32-kg neutered female crossbreed dog was treated for a large lumbosacral skin defect.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: The dog had sustained multiple, penetrating dog bite wounds to the lumbosacral and gluteal regions 5 days earlier. The referring veterinarian had initiated treatment with amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, which was continued at a dosage of 8.75 mg/kg, SC, every 24 hours at the referral hospital. Examination of the skin defect revealed a large subcutaneous abscess in the dorsal lumbosacral region with draining perimeter tracts at the wound margin. The partial-thic…

We describe the technique of magnetic coil (MC) stimulation of the lumbosacral roots and the possible site of stimulation in 22 control subjects, and the clinical usefulness of MC stimulation in 5 patients with low back pain. We observed 2 components in the compound muscle action potential of the soleus muscle following MC stimulation over the lumbosacral region. The second component had the physiological properties of the H reflex. The conduction time from the anterior horn cells of the lumbosacral spinal cord to the site of nerve root stimulation over the lumbosacral vertebral column was ind…

The lumbosacral dural abnormalities in two patients with von Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis (vRNF) are described. Analysis of 18 previousl … leeves and should, therefore, be distinguished from other types of meningeal cysts occurring in the lumbosacral region. The clinical significance of these dural anomalies are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the development of the axial skeleton in human trisomy 13 fetuses and to define which fields in the … alformation in the lumbosacral spine and the thoracic spine. When mild malformation occurred in the lumbosacral region, no malformation was observed in the thoracic region, whereas malformation was observed in the thoracic region when there was extensive malformation in the lumbosacral region. Malformations did not occur in the cervical spine or the basilar part of …

Light microscopic changes were studied in the dorsal funiculi of spinal cords from rats irradiated (4000 R) at 3 days of age and killed from 9-60 days postirradiation (P-I). The irradiated site was limited to a 5-mm length of mid-thoracic spinal cord (T only) in one group of rats, to a 5-mm length of lumbosacral spinal cord (L only) in a second group, and to 5-mm lengths of both mid-thoracic and lumbosacral spinal cord (T/L) in the third group. Changes in the lumbosacral regions were essentially the same in both L only and T/L irradiated groups. These changes included a decreased neuroglial po…

There are many imaging modalities available for evaluating the canine lumbosacral region. These include conventional radiography, stress radiography, myelography, epidurography, transosseous and intravenous venography, discography, linear tomography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Myelography, epidurography and discography are commonly used, but often lack sensitivity. Myelography is of little value when evaluating the cauda equina because the dural sac is elevated from the vertebral canal floor and frequently ends before the lumbosacral junction. Epidurography will ident…

A 30-year-old woman with Marfan's syndrome had chronic intractable headaches and spontaneous intracranial hypotension. The pain was concentrated over the occipitonuchal region, had elements of both migraine and tension headache, and was often aggravated by postural change. Myelography showed multiple, large, lumbosacral arachnoid diverticula. Radioisotope cisternography revealed a halolike accumulation in the lumbosacral region and rapid uptake of isotope in the urinary bladder, indicating cerebrospinal fluid leakage. Epidural blood patching brought immediate relief from the positional headach…

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: A great number of unsuccessful intervertebral herniated disk surgeries in the lumbosacral region have highlighted the importance of a comprehensive knowledge of the different types of nerve root anomalies. That knowledge gained by anatomical studies (and intraoperative findings) might contribute to better results. In our study we focused on intraspinal extradural lumbosacral nerve root anomalies and their possible role in radiculopathy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was performed on 43 cadavers within 24 hours after death (32 men and 11 women). Bodies were dissect…

The effect of acute and chronic section of the digital nerves of a single toe on the organization of low-threshold, mechanoreceptive fields of lumbosacral spinocervical tract (SCT) neurons has been studied in adult cats anesthetized with chloralose. The immediate effect of sectioning the digital nerves of a single toe is to produce a patch of dorsal horn in the medial region of the ipsilateral lumbosacral cord in which SCT neurons lack any peripheral receptive field when gentle hair movement or light touch of glabrous skin are used as stimuli. Other SCT neurons in the region may lose only part

Congenital midline paraspinal cutaneous markers have been practically linked to the location and nature of neural-tissue lesions. One of the most interesting congenital midline paraspinal cutaneous markers has been the human tail in the lumbosacral region, with underlying spinal dysraphism. Human tails have many shapes and sizes and are usually localized to the lumbosacral region. After a complete neurological examination, the MRI is the most sensitive diagnostic modality to reveal the underlying occult spinal dysraphic state. Surgical excision is aimed at untethering of the spinal cord in sym…

BACKGROUND: Surgical correction of ASD can be challenging. The indication for surgery is individual and after specification of the therapeut … the patient. Besides osteotomies in a previously fused region, especially reinstrumentation of the lumbosacral region can be challenging, although ala-ilium and ilium screws give the greatest stability. Additional anterior intersomatic cages allow for a better fusion rate, and, moreover they provide better lordozation. Each PLIF, TLIF, and ALIF cage has its own spe …
