Chikungunya fever (CHIKF) is an arbovirus characterized by acute fever, myalgia and polyarthralgia. Lymphedema in the lower limbs (LL) was observed in several patients during an outbreak of CHIKF in the state of Pernambuco (Brazil) in 2016. No reports on lymphatic vessels disease due to CHIKF have been described. The aim of the study was to follow lymphatic abnormalities in the LL of 16 patients with CHIKF, using lymphoscintigraphy. An observational, prospective study with patients in the acute phase of CHIKF (confirmed serological diagnosis) with LL edema submitted to clinical evaluation and l

As one of the lymphatic functions, it is well known that the transport and drainage of hydrophilic substances including plasma protein through the lymphatic system play pivotal roles in maintaining the homeostasis of the internal environment between the cells in tissues in collaboration with the exchange of the substances through the blood capillaries and venules. The physiological functions of the lymphatic system have been studied by many investigations of microcirculation, i.e., Yoffey and Courtice, Ruszunyak et al., Földie and Casley-Smigh et al., Roddie, Schmid-Schönbein et al., and Ohhas

Two patients with congenital dysplasia of the lymphatic system and with chylous ascites are described. In one 24-year old woman with this rare condition, it was possible to demonstrate for the first time numerous mediastinal lymphatic cysts during lymphangiography. Both patients showed an abnormality of the retroperitoneal lymphatics, consisting of lymphatic dilatation and cysts. In the investigation of chylous ascites, direct lymphangiography must be regarded as a valuable and necessary investigation.

UNLABELLED: Neonatal chylothorax (NCTx) and central lymphatic flow disorder (CLFD) are historically challenging neonatal disorders with high morbidity and mortality.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 35 neonates with pulmonary lymphatic abnormalities at our institution who underwent lymphatic evaluation between December 2015 and September 2018. Patients with only pulmonary lymphatic perfusion syndrome were classified as NCTx and those with multiple flow abnormalities were classified as CLFD. Demographics, clinical characteristics, and outcomes were compared using t-tests/Wilcoxon

UNLABELLED: In patients with breast cancer-related lymphedema, distinct lymphatic patterns and changed lymphatic contractile function have been described, but it is unknown how these characteristics change over time and to what extent they appear before clinical edema is detectable. Recently, we described the lymphatic morphology and function in a cohort of breast cancer patients shortly after radiation therapy (RT). In the current study, we investigate lymphatic function and morphology in the same cohort after 1 year of follow-up.
METHODS: The study population consisted of 28 breast cancer p

In human medicine, the 2025 International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA) classification distinguishes localized lymphatic malformations from systemic disorders referred to as complex lymphatic anomalies (CLAs), including generalized lymphatic anomaly (GLA) and central conducting lymphatic anomaly (CCLA). GLA is characterized by multifocal proliferation of dilated lymphatic channels infiltrating soft tissues and visceral organs, whereas CCLA involves structural or functional abnormalities of the central lymphatic pathways such as the thoracic duct commonly resulting in chyl

A 30-year-old woman presented with progressive edema and mild diarrhea. Laboratory examination revealed hypoalbuminemia. She underwent 99mTc-antimony sulphide colloid (99mTc-ASC) lymphoscintigraphy to evaluate potential loss of protein through gastrointestinal tract caused by lymphatic leakage and detect abnormalities in the lymphatic systems. The images showed abnormal leakage of radiotracers in the bowel, suggestive of protein loss through the gastrointestinal tract. Abnormal visualization of the lower part of thoracic duct and bilateral venous angle was also demonstrated on 99mTc-ASC scinti

OBJECTIVE: The contralateral limbs of patients with unilateral lymphedema in the lower limbs (LLs) can exhibit abnormal lymphatic circulation, even in the absence of lymphedema. This idea is based on a number of reports that have studied isolated cases using lymphoscintigraphy. It is likely that these patients previously had some form of lymphopathy, and the lymphedema arose after the action of some external factor. However, there are no studies in the literature that adequately assess the asymptomatic contralateral limbs of these patients or address the prevalence and characteristics of the a

A Dutch woman with non-parasitic chyluria is described. Lymphangiography and abdominal CT demonstrated retroperitoneal lymphangiectasis, dilated and tortuous lymphatic ducts around the right pyelocaliceal system and contrast in the bladder. The thoracic duct was patient. There were no metabolic or immunological abnormalities. The aetiology was probably congenital malformation of the lymphatic system. The treatment was conservative.

The lymphatic vasculature has traditionally been considered important for removal of excessive fluid from the interstitial space, absorption of fat from the intestine and the immune system. Advances in molecular medicine and imaging have provided us with new tools to study the lymphatics. This has revealed that the vessels are actively involved in regulation of immune cell trafficking and inflammation. We now know much about how new lymphatic vessels are created (lymphangiogenesis) and that this is important in, for example, wound healing and tissue repair. The best characterised pathway for l

BACKGROUND: Yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is a rare disease manifesting as a triad of yellow-green dystrophic nails, lymphedema, and chronic respiratory disease. The etiology of YNS is obscure and investigations are few. A single lymphatic pathogenesis has been proposed to account for all the associated features, and despite the lack of evidence for a unifying lymphatic mechanism, this hypothesis prevails. The objective was to explore the lymphatic phenotype in YNS and to establish whether lymphatic dysfunction could be a major contributing factor to the disease process.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Fou

Children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome share unique hemodynamic features that alter lymphatic integrity at all stages of palliation. Lymphatic congestion is almost universal in this patient group to some extent. It may lead to reversal of lymphatic flow, the development of abnormal lymphatic channels and ultimately decompression and loss of protein rich lymphatic fluid into extra lymphatic compartments in prone individuals. Some of the most devastating complications that are associated with single ventricle physiology, notably plastic bronchitis and protein losing enteropathy, have now

The lymphatic system has an early development in the embryo. Usually, its development is complete by the 40th postconceptional day. If this connection fails to develop, lymphatic stasis and dilatation of the lymphatic channels may occur, causing a number of pathologies such as: lymphangiomas, lymphangiectasis and cystic hygromas. Prenatal diagnosis can be made during the first trimester of pregnancy by ultrasonographic examination. A case of a twin pregnancy associated with cystic hygroma and bilateral hypoplasia of lower and upper limbs of both foetuses without chromosomal abnormalities is re

BACKGROUND: In lymphaticovenular anastomosis (LVA), discrepancies between functional assessment of lymphatic flow using indocyanine green (ICG) lymphography and structural evaluation using ultrasound remain a challenge. This study aimed to clarify the spatial relationship between the early dermal backflow transition point (eDBF-TP) identified by ICG and lymphatic structural transition points (LSTPs) detected by ultra-high-frequency ultrasound (UHFUS).
METHODS: This prospective observational study included 60 sites in patients with secondary limb lymphedema. After identifying eDBF-TP using ICG

BACKGROUND: Risk factors associated with developing lymphedema following axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) are well-described in the literature. However, lymphedema diagnosis criteria is arbitrary and can vary between studies. This study instead aims to identify protective factors associated with normal lymphatic function after ALND for treatment of breast cancer.
METHODS: This was a prospective study of women treated with unilateral ALND for breast cancer between 2020 and 2023. Patients with normal lymphatic function were defined as meeting all of four criteria: <10% arm volume change fr

Primary lymphatic "dysplasia", a congenital maldevelopment, interferes with function of the lymphatic system and causes effusion of chyle or lymph into the limbs and pleural or peritoneal cavity. Between 1955 and 1982, 38 Mayo Clinic patients were found to have a chylous effusion or dysplasia of the lymphatic system. In 22, the condition was secondary to surgery or other medical problems and in 16 it was primary. These cases were separated into three categories: chylothorax, chylous ascites, and generalized lymphatic dysplasia. Conservative therapy, such as a restricted fat diet or total paren

INTRODUCTION: The lymphatic system is a multifaceted regulator of tissue homeostasis and an integral part of immune responses. Previous studies had shown that subsets of lymphatic endothelial cells (LEC) express PTX3, an essential component of humoral innate immunity and tissue homeostasis.
METHODS: In the present study using whole-mount imaging and image-based morphometric quantifications, Ptx3-targeted mice and in vivo functional analysis, we investigated the involvement of PTX3 in shaping and function of the lymphatic vasculature.
RESULTS: We found that PTX3 is localized in the extracellu

Piezo1 regulates multiple aspects of the vascular system by converting mechanical signals generated by fluid flow into biological processes. Here, we find that Piezo1 is necessary for the proper development and function of meningeal lymphatic vessels and that activating Piezo1 through transgenic overexpression or treatment with the chemical agonist Yoda1 is sufficient to increase cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) outflow by improving lymphatic absorption and transport. The abnormal accumulation of CSF, which often leads to hydrocephalus and ventriculomegaly, currently lacks effective treatments. We di
