Mesotocin (MT), the oxytocin-like peptide of the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii) is important for delivery of live young. The oxytocin receptor antagonist [1-deamino-2-D-Tyr-(OEt)-4-Thr-8-Om]-oxytocin (Atosiban) is a specific antagonist of both mesotocin- and oxytocin-induced myometrial contractions in late pregnant tammars in vitro. Between January and April, 1992, two captive Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus) from a wildlife park in Iwamizawa City, Hokkaido, Japan, were diagnosed as having nutritional myopathy. One wallaby, four-year-old adult male, had mild fresh lesions, confined to the skeletal muscles, with poor cell reaction. The other wallaby, 8-month-old female joey, had marked and extensive lesions with cellular reactions and regenerative muscle fibers in the locomotor muscles. Involvement of other striated muscles such as those of the tongue, diaphragm and heart was mild with minimal cellular reaction.

The late Cenozoic period saw widespread diversification of grazing hoofed mammals characterized by high-crowned molar teeth with low, thinly enameled crests. However, Australia's dominant grazing herbivores, the kangaroos, have much lower-crowned and higher-relief molars that are more akin to some "archaic" placental herbivores.
