14N magnetic resonance for materials detection in the field.

Nitrogen is prevalent in many materials, both naturally occurring and man-made. In particular, it is found in many explosives and other contraband materials. One technique for the detection of such materials in the field is the use of the magnetic resonance signal from the nearly 100% abundant, spin-1, 14N nuclei. Some of the difficulties with such measurements in the field include spurious signals from acoustic resonances, radio-frequency interference, and generally low signal-to-noise ratios. A summary of recent work by the authors to help mitigate these difficulties is presented.

Neurochemical effects of static magnetic field exposure.

BACKGROUND: There has been considerable interest in both the lay and scientific media concerning the putative effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields. An assessment of the effects of static magnet exposure on neurochemistry was undertaken to determine potential risks to patients and staff involved with magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy. METHODS: One set of rats were exposed to weak static field (800 gauss [G]) in an otherwise normal laboratory surrounding. Another set of rats were exposed to 7-Tesla fields, both with suitable controls. RESULTS: Exposure of rats (n=8) to weak

The early component of the visual evoked magnetic field.

Several EEG studies have reported an early component of the visual evoked potential. However, it is controversial whether this component is cortical or subcortical. Our study has aimed to clarify this problem using MEG and EEG in nine normal volunteers. A total of 4000 stimuli were presented to the monocular visual hemifield through a light-proof stimulating goggle and the visual evoked magnetic field and visual evoked potential was measured above the occipital lobe. The early component was observed in three of the nine subjects. The latency ranged from 40 to 45 ms in MEG and from 39 to 47 ms

Collective Motion and Programmable Self-Organization of Rotating Active Particles Manipulated by Magnetic Fields.

Rotating magnetic microparticles are classic active matter systems dominated by competing magnetic dipolar attraction and spin-induced hydrodynamic repulsion, whose collective behaviors under programmable magnetic field remain insufficiently characterized. This work builds a two-dimensional orthogonal Helmholtz coil experimental setup to investigate the collective motion and self-organization of magnetic microparticles. For single-component assemblies, the hexatic order parameter varies non-monotonically with driving frequency and particle area fraction; an intermediate frequency range (60-80

Anti-inflammatory activity of magnetic fields emitted by graphene devices on cultured human cells.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation plays a key role in various diseases such as pancreatitis, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis. Acute inflammation involves processes like vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, and leukocyte accumulation, which lead to cellular damage due to reactive oxygen species (ROS). Low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMFs) have shown potential in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. This study assesses the effectiveness of a new wearable device containing graphene quantum dots in reducing inflammation and oxidative stress in Jurkat T cells stimulated by lipopo

Metallofullerenol alleviates alcoholic liver damage via ROS clearance under static magnetic and electric fields.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a common chronic redox disease caused by increased alcohol consumption. Abstinence is a major challenge for people with alcohol dependence, and approved drugs have limited efficacy. Therefore, this study aimed to explore a new treatment strategy for ALD using ferroferric oxide endohedral fullerenol (Fe3O4@C60(OH)n) in combination with static magnetic and electric fields (sBE). The primary hepatocytes of 8-9-week-old female BALB/c mice were used to evaluate the efficacy of the proposed combination treatment. A mouse chronic binge ethanol feeding model was establ

Acute and subchronic toxicity of 20  kHz and 60  kHz magnetic fields in rats.

Despite increasing use of intermediate frequency (IF) magnetic fields (MFs) in occupational and domestic settings, scientific evidence necessary for health risk assessments of IF MF is insufficient. Male and female Crl:CD(SD) rats (12 per sex per group) were exposed to 20 kHz, 0.20 mT(root mean square, rms) or 60 kHz, 0.10 mT(rms) sinusoidal MFs for 22 h day(-1) for 14 days (acute) or 13 weeks (subchronic). Experiments were duplicated for each frequency to ensure outcome reproducibility, and examinations were blinded for quality assurance. All rats survived without significant clinical signs u

Estimating magnetic fields of homes near transmission lines in the California Power Line Study.

The California Power Line Study is a case-control study investigating the relation between residences near transmission lines and risk of childhood leukemia. It includes 5788 childhood leukemia cases and 5788 matched primary controls born between 1986 and 2007. We describe the methodology for estimating magnetic fields at study residences as well as for characterizing sources of uncertainty in these estimates. Birth residences of study subjects were geocoded and their distances to transmission lines were ascertained. 302 residences were deemed sufficiently close to transmission lines to have n

Pulsed extremely low-frequency magnetic fields stimulate microvesicle release from human monocytic leukaemia cells.

Microvesicles are released from cell surfaces constitutively during early apoptosis or upon activation with various stimuli including sublytic membrane attack complex (MAC). This study shows that an alternating current, pulsed, extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field (0.3 μT at 10 Hz, 6V AC) induced transient plasma membrane damage that allowed calcium influx. This in turn caused a release of stimulated microvesicles (sMV). When extracellular calcium was chelated with EGTA, sMV biogenesis initiated by ELFMF was markedly reduced and the reduction was less than when the stimulation was the

Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields from the primary and secondary somatosensory cortices in healthy newborns.

Although brain development has been actively investigated in animals, maturation of the cerebral cortex in human newborns is still poorly understood. This study aimed at characterizing the cortical areas participating in tactile processing in human neonates. Somatosensory-evoked magnetic fields were recorded from 21 healthy full-term newborns during natural sleep. Altogether, four cortical areas were activated by tactile stimulation: the contra- and ipsilateral primary (SI) and secondary (SII) somatosensory cortices. The contralateral SI was activated first in all the newborns. This early acti

Alimentary hyperlipemia of rabbits is affected by exposure to low-intensity pulsed magnetic fields.

An experimental study was carried out in rabbits to investigate the effects of exposing rabbits to low-intensity pulsed magnetic fields (PMFs) on alimentary hyperlipemia. Thirty female white big ear rabbits were randomly divided into three groups. The normal group was fed with a standard chow diet and the other two groups (hyperlipid and magnetic) were fed with the chow diet supplemented with cholesterol, yolk powder and lard. The magnetic group was exposed to 15 Hz pulsed magnetic fields. After 8 weeks, levels of blood lipid and indices of hemorheology were examined. In addition, histomorphol

Power-frequency electric and magnetic fields in the light of Draper et al. 2005.

Power-frequency electric and magnetic fields are produced wherever electricity is used; exposure is ubiquitous. Epidemiologic studies find an association between children living in homes with the highest magnetic fields and childhood leukemia, but bias is a possible alternative to a causal explanation. A new study, Draper et al., looks at residence close to high-voltage power lines, one source of exposure to such fields, and its design avoids any obvious bias. It finds elevated childhood leukemia rates, but extending too far from the power lines to be straightforwardly compatible with the exis

Large granular lymphocytic (LGL) leukemia in rats exposed to intermittent 60 Hz magnetic fields.

An animal model for large granular lymphocytic (LGL) leukemia in male Fischer 344 rats was utilized to determine whether magnetic field exposure can be shown to influence the progression of leukemia. We previously reported that exposure to continuous 60 Hz, 1 mT magnetic fields did not significantly alter the clinical progression of LGL leukemia in young male rats following injection of spleen cells from donor leukemic rats. Results presented here extend those studies with the following objectives: (a) to replicate the previous study of continuous 60 Hz magnetic field exposures, but using fewe

The possible role of contact current in cancer risk associated with residential magnetic fields.

Residential electrical wiring safety practices in the US result in the possibility of a small voltage (up to a few tenths of a volt) on appliance surfaces with respect to water pipes or other grounded surfaces. This "open circuit voltage" (V(OC)) will cause "contact current" to flow in a person who touches the appliance and completes an electrical circuit to ground. This paper presents data suggesting that contact current due to V(OC) is an exposure that may explain the reported associations of residential magnetic fields with childhood leukemia. Our analysis is based on a computer model of a

Chronic toxicity/oncogenicity evaluation of 60 Hz (power frequency) magnetic fields in B6C3F1 mice.

A 2-yr whole-body exposure study was conducted to evaluate the chronic toxicity and possible oncogenicity of 60 Hz (power frequency) magnetic fields in mice. Groups of 100 male and 100 female B6C3F1 mice were exposed to pure, linearly polarized, transient-free 60 Hz magnetic fields at flux densities of 0 Gauss (G) (sham control), 20 milligauss (mG), 2 G, and 10 G; an additional group of 100 male and 100 female B6C3F1 mice received intermittent (1 hr on/1 hr off) exposure to 10 G fields. A small but statistically significant increase in mortality was observed in male mice exposed continuously t

Vortex or whorl formation of cultured human corneal epithelial cells induced by magnetic fields.

The terms 'vortex keratopathy' and 'hurricane keratopathy' describe two similar conditions affecting the corneal surface. In the former, a vortex or whorl pattern is seen on the corneal surface and is due to the deposition of substances such as pigment, iron or drugs in the epithelial cells. In the latter, a similar pattern is presented by migrating epithelial cells but, unlike the former, the pattern is rendered more visible by fluorescein staining. Both represent the migratory pattern of normal epithelial cells which is otherwise not visible due to the slow rate of epithelial turnover and mi

Magnetic fields normalize visual evoked potentials and brainstem auditory evoked potentials in multiple sclerosis.

The present communication concerns a 46 year old woman with a 10 year history of chronic progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) in whom external application of magnetic fields (MF) (7.5 picoTesla; 5 Hz) during a period of remission resulted in a rapid and dramatic improvement in symptoms including vision, cerebellar symptomatology (ataxia and dysarthria), mood, sleep, bowel and bladder functions as well as fatigue. Improvement in the patient's symptoms was associated with normalization of the pretreatment latencies of the visual evoked potentials and brainstem auditory evoked potential responses

Reversal of visual neglect in Parkinson's disease by treatment with picoTesla range magnetic fields.

Visual neglect and impairment in perceptual motor or visuospatial tasks are among the most frequently encountered abnormalities in neuropsychological testing of patients with Parkinson's disease, being present in up to 90% of patients. It has been proposed that neglect reflects an attentional-arousal deficit induced by lesions that interrupt a cortical-limbic-reticular loop. Recently, we have reported that application of extracranial magnetic fields (MF) in the picoTesla range was efficacious in reducing the severity of the motor disability of Parkinsonism as well as improving some of the cogn

Possible health effects of 50/60Hz electric and magnetic fields: review of proposed mechanisms.

There is inconclusive evidence from both epidemiological and laboratory studies that fields similar to those produced by electrical power transmission lines may contribute to certain diseases including cancer. There are several objections to a hypothesis of a direct causative link, based on identifying a mechanism of interaction. One is that the energy density of the fields is several orders of magnitude smaller than that associated with random thermal motion in biological tissue. Secondly, the induced currents are many times smaller than endogenous currents associated with normal membrane pro
