The prevalence of Tourette syndrome in 13-14-year-olds in mainstream schools.

This study's aim was to estimate the prevalence and describe the clinical characteristics of Tourette syndrome (TS) in 13-14-year-old schoolchildren attending mainstream secondary schools. A three-stage ascertainment procedure was used to identify those who had TS. First, all 1012 Year 9 pupils were screened for tics using validated self-report questionnaires, which were completed by parents, teachers, and pupils. Data were available from at least one informant for 918 (90.7%) subjects. Tics were identified in 189 (18.7%) pupils. Second, families were contacted and a semistructured interview w

Spina bifida children in ordinary schools: handicap, attainment and behaviour.

Virtually all survivors of a selective surgical treatment policy were reassessed. This paper describes the status of 43 of the 74 in ordinary schools. The small number placed in special units often had very low or deviant scores on all measures. Those fully integrated had scores insignificantly different from the controls on reading, spelling and mathematics, but had weaknesses of tests of hand function. The majority of fully integrated pupils were free from behaviour problems. The extent of physical handicap encountered among pupils in the ordinary school is described.

Academic aspirations versus institutional realities: evaluating major selection and structural barriers for students with disabilities.

Despite advances in inclusive education policies, students with disabilities still face systemic exclusion within higher education systems. Although overall enrollment rates have increased, a significant empirical gap remains regarding how institutional rigidities limit degree congruence-defined in this study as the direct alignment between a student's intrinsic academic goals and the specific program pathways available to them. Rooted in educational equity frameworks, this descriptive-analytical study examines academic interests, degree congruence, and structural barriers among a purposive sa

School Support Assistance as an Instrument for Inclusive Schooling in Germany: A Pedagogical and Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Perspective Abstract: This article examines the role of school support assistance in Germany from both a pedagogical and a child and adolescent psychiatric and psychotherapeutic perspective. It analyzes its conditions, potentials, and limitations based on legal and structural-systemic considerations. The findings indicate that school support services too often serve as a central prerequisite for attendance in mainstream schools, as they are frequently deployed when

Inclusion of learners with learning disabilities in the Vaal Triangle mainstream classrooms.

BACKGROUND: South Africa adopted a policy on inclusive education in 2001 to ensure that all learners are accommodated and accepted in the classrooms despite their differences. OBJECTIVES: This study was aimed at exploring the inclusion of learners with learning disabilities in mainstream primary schools for teaching and learning. METHOD: This study followed a qualitative approach embedded in a descriptive phenomenological design. Data were generated through in-depth interviews with individual participants and were analysed thematically for content. Six teachers from six different mainstream

Are we training psychiatrists to develop skills in intellectual disability psychiatry? Current European context and future directions.

The majority of people with intellectual disabilities (ID) and psychiatric disorders access mainstream mental health services across Europe. However, only 56% of countries provide postgraduate psychiatric training in ID according to a survey across 42 European countries. We explore the challenges of ID training and make recommendations for education and health policymakers.

Students with chronic diseases: nature of school physician support.

BACKGROUND: To educate children with chronic diseases in the least restrictive environment, schools must prevent, recognize, and react appropriately to symptom exacerbations. Schools are often pushed to their limits of knowledge, resources, and comfort level. This study determined the health conditions of students for whom districts seek school physician consultation and the nature of school physician consultants' involvement. METHODS: A retrospective record review was performed on 250 of the most recent records of school-elicited referrals from an academic center that provides physician cons

Living with spina bifida.

Health care workers are normally the ones who surround family members as they first begin to cope with spina bifida. It is important to assess family stressors and work with family members to formulate a care plan which assists them to cope with this child. Helping these children grow in society, within our schools and in their jobs, shows that continual observations and interventions may be necessary to maintain optimal growth. I have had the opportunity here to share personal experiences. I can truly say that I look forward to the opportunities ahead and realize that success lies not in my j

Scaffolding as a key role for teaching assistants: Perceptions of their pedagogical strategies.

BACKGROUND: Inclusive education policies have led to a worldwide increase in the number of teaching assistants (TAs) working in mainstream schools. TAs have a large amount of responsibility for supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), a role which by default has become instructional in practice, and for which training and preparation are rarely adequate. While there is some research into the nature of TAs' interactions with pupils and the strategies they use which are helpful for children's learning, TAs' perspectives on their own classroom practice have yet

Pragmatics and Peer Relationships Among Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Hearing Adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: The goals of the current study were to (1) examine differences in pragmatic abilities and peer relationship behaviors among deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) adolescents who use spoken language, in comparison with their hearing peers; and (2) explore the contribution of pragmatic skills and speech (ie, articulation and intelligibility [AI]) to social aspects of school functioning among DHH and typically hearing adolescents. METHODS: Thirty-three DHH adolescents and 34 adolescents with typical hearing participated. All DHH adolescents attended mainstream school settings and used spoke

Children education for sustainable control of liver fluke infections.

Significant disease burden is caused by infections with human liver flukes, including Clonorchis sinensis, Opisthorchis viverrini and O. felineus. Epidemiology is characterized by high burden in the male than the female, and in the elder than the younger. Chemotherapy is the mainstream for morbidity control, but it could not prevent re-infection. Meanwhile, behavioral change on the dietary habit of ingesting raw freshwater fish is challenging. In this opinion, we argue why it is important to educate children for sustainable control of liver fluke infections. Then, the design, development and k

School performance and behaviour in extremely preterm growth-retarded infants.

OBJECTIVE: To describe school performance and behaviour of extremely preterm, growth-retarded infants. DESIGN: Cohort study at two tertiary care centres. Included were all surviving, singleton infants (N= 127) with fetal growth retardation due to placental insufficiency. All were delivered by caesarean section because of signs of fetal distress before the beginning of labour at a gestational age of 26 to 32 weeks during the years 1984-1989. Main outcome measures were special education, mainstream education below the appropriate age level and behaviour according to attention-deficit hyperactiv

Teaching phonological skills to a deaf first grader: a promising strategy.

The researchers analyzed the effectiveness of teaching phonological skills to a deaf child using the Direct Instruction curriculum titled Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons (Engelmann, Haddox, & Bruner, 1983). There are few studies that support the use of phonological interventions with students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The present study extends this research base. The study participant was a 7-year-old male first grader with moderate-to-severe mixed bilateral progressive hearing loss. A case study design was implemented for a period of 8 weeks. The integration experience of hearing impaired elementary school students in separated and integrated school settings.

Integration experiences of hearing impaired German elementary school students in separate educational settings (n = 31) were compared with those of counterparts at the same level in integrated settings (n = 26), and evaluated in regard to psychosocial behavior, semantic-lexical abilities, and communicative skills. Analysis of questionnaire responses and intelligence subtests showed that the only difference between the samples concerned perceived well-being in school, and favored the integrated students. Other percentages of variance are explainable by school type (10%), parents' hearing status

The relation between neonatal thyroxine levels and neurodevelopmental outcome at age 5 and 9 years in a national cohort of very preterm and/or very low birth weight infants.

Transient neonatal hypothyroxinemia is very common in preterm infants. The literature on the effect of this hypothyroxinemia is, however, controversial, and large or long-term follow-up studies are not available. In a nationwide prospective follow-up study on very preterm and (or) very low birth weight infants (n = 717), we studied the relationship between thyroxine levels in the 1st wk of life and neurodevelopmental outcome at 5 y of age and school performance at 9 y of age. Thyroxine concentrations from filter paper eluates were determined in 717 infants: 32% had levels of more than 3 SD bel

Teachers' beliefs in inclusive education and the attributional responses toward students with and without specific learning difficulties.

Teachers' beliefs in inclusive education can be influential toward the success of inclusive practices and also students' successes and failures within the classroom. Having a clear understanding and high expectations toward students with specific learning difficulties (SpLD) is important if these students are to reach their potential. This study examined 276 British primary and secondary teachers' perceptions toward inclusive education for all, and their causal attributions toward students with and without SpLD. The results show that teachers who believe that inclusive education is an effectiv

Social interaction and repetitive motor behaviors.

Students with autism have difficulty initiating social interactions and may exhibit repetitive motor behavior (e.g., body rocking, hand flapping). Increasing social interaction by teaching new skills may lead to reductions in problem behavior, such as motor stereotypies. Additionally, self-monitoring strategies can increase the maintenance of skills. A multiple baseline design was used to examine whether multi-component social skills intervention (including peer training, social initiation instruction, and self-monitoring) led to a decrease in repetitive motor behavior. Social initiations for

Experiences of Sex Education and Sexual Awareness in Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The research investigated feelings towards sex education and sexual awareness in young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Data were generated from the sexual knowledge, experiences, feelings and needs questionnaire (McCabe et al. 1999), the sexual awareness questionnaire (Snell et al. 1991) and semi-structured interviews. Twenty typically developing and 20 ASD individuals participated. Feelings toward sex education did not differ between the groups, but the groups differed significantly on measures of sexual awareness. Negative experiences of sex education and issues of vulnerability,
