Delayed recognition and treatment of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) in adults leads to devastating complications. A 24-year-old woman presented with diarrhea, malaise, and shortness of breath. Her medical history included blunt abdominal trauma for which, she had bowel resection surgery and revision surgery within a year of the last surgery at the age of 8 years. She had difficulty in night vision and dry eyes. The best-corrected visual acuity was 6/18 in the BE. On slit-lamp examination in the both eyes (BE), the conjunctiva was thick, dry-looking with wrinkling, and the cornea had diffused super

Described here is a patient with severe watery diarrhea associated with common variable immunodeficiency. Malabsorption for fat, bile acids, vitamin B12 and xylose was demonstrated, but the patient failed to respond to all the usual therapeutic maneuvers. The diarrhea responded only to high dose steroid therapy. Intestinal perfusion studies showed a hitherto undescribed, presumably acquired, glucose-stimulated water, sodium and chloride secretion in the jejunum and ileum, whereas normal fluid and electrolyte transport occurred from bicarbonate and mannitol solutions. Glucose absorption itself

Enteric hyperoxaluria is one of the most frequent complications of bariatric surgery. In this setting the prevalence of kidney stones is increased. Currently the treatment of enteric hyperoxaluria is based not only on the reduction of urinary oxalate but even controlling other lithogenic risk factors, like urinary volume and urinary citrate levels. This case report suggests a possible benefit using magnesium citrate in addition to calcium supplementation, in the treatment of hyperoxaluria caused by enteric malabsorption.

Malabsorption syndrome (MAS) is a multifactorial syndrome which is characterized by enteric disorders and reduced growth rates of broilers. Such condition is responsible for significant economic losses to the poultry industry. A possible association between chicken parvovirus (ChPV) infections and the occurrence of MAS has been proposed. However, such association has not to date been elucidated in view that ChPV has been detected in healthy as well as in MAS-affected chickens. This study aimed to detect and quantify ChPV loads in sera and tissues of MAS-affected, as well as in healthy broilers

AIM: Tropical sprue was considered to be the most important cause of malabsorption in adults in India. However, several reports indicate that celiac disease is now recognized more frequently.
METHODS: We analyzed the clinical presentation, endoscopic and histological features of 94 consecutive patients (age >12 years) with chronic diarrhea and malabsorption syndrome. The spectrum of disease in these patients and features differentiating celiac disease and tropical sprue are reported here.
RESULTS: Celiac disease (n = 61, 65%) was the most common cause of malabsorption followed by tropical sp
