There is a high incidence of complications following treatment of fractures of the dentulous mandible at our institution, which has led us t … antibiotic coverage, all of which will help minimize morbidity associated with teeth in the line of mandibular fractures, especially in high-risk patients. We also recommend extraction of fully or partially erupted third molars in the line of fracture as well as deeply carious teeth, severely mobile teeth, or teeth with half or more of their root surface exposed to th …

OBJECTIVE: To detect site of the mental nerve foramen in patients of mandibular fracture and study its relation to mandibular fracture site using radiology and operative findings during open reduction and internal fixation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was carried out on 46 patients who had traumatic mandibular fractures. All patients were managed by open reduction and internal fixation during which mental foramen site and fracture site were reported and analyzed and compared to preoperative radiography.
RESULTS: By both radiology and operative findings, the mental foramen was found in 7…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Fractures of the mandibular condyle have provided a lasting source of controversy in the field of facial trauma. Concerns regarding facial nerve injury as well as reasonable functional outcomes with closed management led to a reluctance to treat with an open operative intervention. This article reviews how incorporating new technologies and surgical methods have changed the treatment paradigm.
RECENT FINDINGS: Multiple large studies and meta-analyses continue to demonstrate superior outcomes for condylar fractures when managed surgically. Innovations, including endoscopic t

Mandible is the most frequently affected bone during head and neck irradiation. Late changes in the mandible may manifest in the form of reduced bone density, dental caries, loss of spongiosa trabeculations, delayed healing following dental extraction, pathologic fractures, osteoradionecrosis, trismus, growth defects in children or second malignancies. Pathologic fractures of mandibular bone are rare and may be spontaneous or traumatic (following dental extraction). We report the case of a 55-year lady, who had undergone surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy for carcinoma oral tongue T2N0M0 on a c

The authors describe three cases of peripheral facial nerve paralysis in patients with a mandibular fracture. In two cases, in which the onset of palsy was uncertain, the facial nerve injury was contralateral to the fractured side. Topodiagnostic tests showed neural damage at the third intrapetrosal portion and at the genicular ganglion. In one of the two patients tomography revealed a fracture line through the anterio-superior wall of the external auditory canal homolateral to the facial palsy. In the third subject palsy set in immediately after the trauma and was ipsilateral to the mandibula

This report describes a case of agranulocytosis associated with an infected mandibular fracture. Because agranulocytosis is most frequently associated with drug sensitivity, drug therapy is usually stopped or changed when the disease is discovered. This case demonstrates the need to evaluate the causes of agranulocytosis before stopping or changing a patient's medications.

PURPOSE: The aim of this research was to determine whether rigid internal fixation interferes with mandibular growth and development in growing New Zealand white rabbits with induced mandibular fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten 3-month-old New Zealand white rabbits were included in the study. Surgical fractures were performed in the right mandibular bodies of the 10 rabbits. These fractures were reduced with internal rigid fixation by use of a 1.0-mm titanium system, taking the contralateral left mandibular bodies as the control group. We obtained radiographs preoperatively and at 1, 2, a…

An algorithm for the treatment of noncondylar mandibular fractures is presented based on outcomes from studies that have been performed during the past 30 years. It is designed to assist clinicians in formulating a treatment plan that can be expected to provide the patient with a predictable outcome.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the condylar process account for between 25% and 35% of all mandibular fractures. Treatment options for fractures of the condyles consist of either the closed method or by open reduction with fixation. Complications may be associated with either treatment option; for the closed approach these can include malocclusion, particularly open bites, reduced posterior facial height and facial asymmetry in addition to chronic pain and reduced mobility. A cutaneous scar and temporary paralysis of the facial nerve are not infrequent complications associated with the open approach…

Mandibular fractures are some of the most frequently occurring injuries in the maxillofacial region although pathological fractures state only 2% of them. Bone cysts are common lesions of mandible and maxilla. Their long asymptomatic development causes extensive deformation and bone damage. A case report presents fracture of mandible affected with massive odontogenic cyst. Presentation, diagnosis and management of fracture and intraosseus pathology is discussed.

Complications in connection with implantological measures will occur with greater frequency in the future, purely from the point of view of quantity, owing to the increasing number of implantations. One of the most serious, yet extremely rare consequences of implantation is fracture of the mandible. It occurs predominantly in older patients with extremely atrophic mandibles, especially if the dental implants are anchored bicortically, or after explantation of dental implants. The risk of a fracture is increased in addition by weakening of the mandible as a result of osteomyelitis, especially i

Various approaches have been proposed for surgical treatment of displaced condylar fractures included submandibular approach, preauricular approach, rhytidectomy approach or intraoral approach. Since 1992, we used a short retromandibular approach to treat displaced subcondylar fractures with a miniplate. When open reduction and osteosynthesis are required, the retro-mandibular approach is an easy and safe technique for displaced condylar fractures. The aim of this article was to describe the short retro-mandibular approach. Indications for surgical treatment, surgical approach and techniques o

The length of the root of the mandibular canine tooth has been considered by many authors as being a source of weakness in the mandible. It has also been suggested that a direct blow or a bending force around this tooth can result in traumatic injury. We advance a theory that implicates the maxillary canine tooth as directly contributing to the mandibular canine region fracture pattern.

The authors describe a case in which an elderly patient, who had previously been treated for trigeminal neuralgia, developed a subsequent fracture of the mandible at the site of a further trigger point. This presented difficulty in management of the case, and the necessary treatment is reviewed.
