The prosthetic treatment of patients with an edentulous maxilla opposing mandibular natural teeth is one of the most challenging endeavors that face clinicians. Occlusal forces from the opposing natural teeth may cause fractures in the maxillary prosthesis and also result in advanced bone loss of the edentulous maxilla. With the presence of extreme gagging reflex, the treatment may become more complicated. This article describes and illustrates the 2-stage surgical and prosthetic treatment of a patient with an edentulous maxilla opposing natural teeth. In the beginning, the patient was treated

Temporomandibular joint replacement (TJR) with alloplastic prosthesis has shown promising long-term results in end stage joint disorders. We present a case of young woman with painful ankylosis that where reconstructed with TJR, due to a complex mandibular fracture with dislocation of the left condyle into the middle cranial fossa two years earlier. At the age of 18 the subject underwent a total joint replacement with custom-made alloplastic TMJ prosthesis. To determine the bone response and remodeling activity around the prosthesis, a F18 PET/CT-scan was used. No sign of increased remodeling

The lateralization of the inferior alveolar nerve, or LIAN procedure, may be a surgical consideration for implant-prosthetic rehabilitation in the edentulous mandibular posterior region. This technique can be advantageous in that it does not require a donor site and allows for the immediate placement of an implant, potentially leading to reduced morbidity, healing time, and costs. Although such risks as altered sensory nerve function and weakening of the mandibular body are associated with the LIAN procedure, it is a viable alternative to various regenerative techniques to rehabilitate a patie

INTRODUCTION: Patients with severe overbite in middle age often undergo prosthetic treatment without a diagnosis of dentofacial deformity, but soft tissue trauma can occur in such patients due to the lack of inter-occlusal space. Comprehensive surgical orthodontic treatment and prosthetic treatment are indicated to correct the overbite and soft tissue injury for such patients.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report the cases of two middle-aged patients with dentofacial deformity and severe overbite without molar support. In both cases, prosthetic treatment had been performed for many years without a

This novel hybrid single-double-single barrel (1-2-1) design for fibula free flap reconstruction addresses the unique challenges presented by Brown class III mandibular defects, which involve long-span defects at both bodies of the mandible and the chin. The importance of this design lies in its ability to overcome the limitations of traditional approaches in terms of mandible height and pedicle length, while optimizing both functional and aesthetic outcomes. The technique uses a combination of single-double-single barrel fibula segments to achieve ideal aesthetics and support for dental prosth

Insufficient crown height space, particularly in the interforaminal region of edentulous ridges with knife-edge morphology, may prevent successful prosthetic rehabilitation. Such conditions require osteoplasty, which might complicate computer-guided implant placement. This clinical report illustrates the treatment of a patient with complete edentulism rehabilitated with a mandibular implant-supported fixed dental prosthesis by using a virtually guided approach. Both alveolar ridge reduction and prosthetically driven implant insertions were computer-guided by surgical stents to increase accurac

Loss of bone in the mandible after tooth removal is associated with anatomic and aesthetic complications and instability of the mandibular complete denture. This continuing bone loss is not limited to alveolar bone; portions of the basal bone may also be resorbed. Thus, mandibular complete denture is the most unstable, unretentive, conventional prosthesis fabricated in routine dental practice. Root-form endosteal implants cannot always be placed in advanced atrophic mandibles without autogenous bone grafting (from either the iliac hip crest or another site) or bone regeneration. The ramus fram

BACKGROUND: Meningoencephaloceles can originate through any defect in the cranial bones, including the skull base. They can be completely asymptomatic or present with typical symptoms such as headaches, seizures, or meningitis.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors present the case of a 54-year-old female who presented with right-sided ear and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain. Computed tomography showed a large lytic lesion of the squamous part of the temporal bone with cortical bone destruction, extending to the mandibular fossa. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a temporal bone meningoencephalo

Mandibular reconstruction with a fibula free flap is often used for advanced oral malignancies, osteonecrosis, or benign tumors to restore function and appearance after segmental mandibulectomy. The "Jaw in a Day" (JIAD) technique enables immediate restoration of form and function with a fibula free flap, implants, and a temporary prosthesis. This case reports the unique use of the JIAD technique in a young female patient with a traumatic mandibular nonunion fracture and chronic osteomyelitis, demonstrating its efficacy in significantly enhancing her quality of life. A 36-year-old woman with good periodontal health sought treatment for a compensated Class II partially edentulous malocclusion associated with a steep mandibular plane (SN-MP, 45°), 9 missing teeth, a 3-mm midline discrepancy, and compromised posterior occlusal function. She had multiple carious lesions, a failing fixed prostheses in the mandibular right quadrant replacing the right first molar, and a severely atrophic edentulous ridge in the area around the mandibular left first and second molars. After restoration of the caries, the mandibular left third molar served as anchorage to correct

For placement of a temporomandibular joint prosthesis, preauricular and retromandibular approaches are used. The main complication of the retromandibular approach is marginal mandibular nerve damage. In this technical study, the retromandibular subparotideomasseteric fascial approach is introduced as an alternative to avoid the complications of the conventional retromandibular approach.
