The social context and epidemiology of STIs in remote communities in Northern Canada was examined. These communities have a persistently high reported incidence of gonorrhoea and chlamydial infection. They remain in the hyperendemic phase of the N. gonorrhoeae and C. trachomatis epidemics. We performed screening for osteoporosis for the early detection of a decrease in the bone mineral density. The subjects consisted of 852 inhabitants (308 males and 544 females) aged 40 years or more in Nansei (population, 12, 107) in Mie Prefecture. We examined the values of prostate specific antigen (PSA) with a RIA kit (Pros Check PSA) and an EIA kit (Market F PA), measuring prostate weights of 125 participants in a mass screening of the prostatic diseases. A mild positive correlation (r = 0.467) between values of PSA (RIA) and prostate weights was found in the participants in whom the prostate cancer was not detected. From 1.10.1974 to 29.2.1976 in Wismar a cervical cancer screening on computerbase was performed. The participation of the female population (20 to 65 years) was relative high, with 74,9%, results are discussed. In 12702 investigations 12 cases of dysplasia (severe degree), 41 carcinomata in situ and 14 cases of invasive cervical cancer were revealed.

A rapid, sensitive and specific procedure is described for the mass screening and confirmation of barbiturates in urine specimens. The method is sensitive to 0.5 mug/ml levels of the commonly used barbiturates. The urine samples are screened by radioimmuno-assay. Specimens screened positive are confirmed by gas-liquid chromatography using a flame ionization detector. In 1969-1970 a breast mass-screening was undertaken in Gävle, with thermography and questionnaire. Mammary radiography and clinical examination of subjects with abnormal screening reports and of a group of normal subjects were performed. In spite of having achieved early detection of malignant tumours in many cases with a preponderance of carcinoma cases in the abnormal group, thermography was found to have considerable drawbacks as a screening method.
