Anal sphincter function after total mesorectal excision is comparable to that of healthy subjects: results of a matched pair analysis.

AIM: The aim of this paper was to compare healthy subjects and patients after total mesorectal excision concerning anal resting/squeeze pressure and surface-electromyography of the sphincter. METHODS: Forty patients (9 female/31 male) after total mesorectal excision due to low or middle rectal cancer were compared to a sex-, age- and BMI-matched group of healthy volunteers by means of anorectal pull-through manometry using a microtip-transducer system and by means of endoanal surface electromyography using a bipolar plug electrode. RESULTS: Resting pressure (59.2 ± 3.1 mmHg vs. 68.3 ± 4.3 mm

Maternal morbidity of women receiving birth center care in New South Wales: a matched-pair analysis using linked health data.

BACKGROUND: Around 2 percent of women who give birth in Australia each year do so in a birth center. New South Wales, Australia's largest state, accounts for almost half of these births. Previous studies have highlighted the need for better quality data on maternal morbidity and mortality, to fully evaluate the safety of birth center care. AIMS: This study aimed to examine maternal morbidity related to birth center care for women in New South Wales. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study with matched-pairs was conducted using linked health data for New South Wales. Maternal outcomes were comp

Comparison of mechanical thrombectomy with Tigertriever versus Solitaire X stent retriever in real-world practice: A matched-pair retrospective analysis.

BackgroundThe Tigertriever (Rapid Medical, Israel) is the first manually expandable stent retriever, designed to enhance clot engagement and vessel wall apposition. Despite increasing use, comparative data with the widely adopted Solitaire X device (Medtronic, USA) are limited. This study aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of Tigertriever versus Solitaire in mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for acute ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed 346 MT procedures (May 2019-September 2024). Patients treated with Tigertriever or Solitaire X (with/without aspi

High-dose-rate brachytherapy as monotherapy versus as boost in unfavorable intermediate-risk localized prostate cancer: A matched-pair analysis.

PURPOSE: High-dose-rate brachytherapy as monotherapy (HDR-M), or as a boost combined with external beam radiotherapy (HDR-B), are both suitable treatments for intermediate-risk prostate cancer. However, data directly comparing these two approaches for men with unfavorable intermediate-risk (UIR) patients are lacking. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients with NCCN-defined UIR prostate cancer treated from 1997 to 2020 were identified in a prospectively maintained, single institution database. HDR-M and HDR-B patients were matched using three factors: age ±3 years; Gleason score (major and minor); an

Venous bypass grafts versus arteriovenous loops as recipient vessels for microvascular anastomosis in lower extremity reconstructions: A matched-pair analysis.

BACKGROUND: Limb salvage in patients with peripheral vascular disease (PVD) and soft tissue defects often requires both a restoration of blood flow to the lower extremity and soft tissue coverage. Outcomes of free tissue transfer may be affected by vein grafts, which can be used for the placement of an autologous venous bypass or an arteriovenous (AV) loop leading to different hemodynamic situations. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether free flap anastomosis to a bypass or an AV loop can be performed with comparable results. METHODS: We performed a matched-pair analysis of 22

Influence of smoking history on imaging characteristics among patients with human papillomavirus-positive oropharyngeal cancer: a blinded matched-pair analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive oropharyngeal cancers represent a distinct clinical entity with more favorable prognosis than do HPV-negative oropharyngeal cancers. However, among patients with HPV-positive oropharyngeal carcinomas, those with a significant smoking history have a much worse prognosis. Recently, imaging characteristics of oropharyngeal cancers were identified as markers of poor prognosis. The purpose of this study was to determine whether nodal imaging characteristics differ between smokers and never/light smokers with HPV-positive oropharyngeal canc

[Does the use of free transplanted jejunum segments in advanced laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer prolong survival? A matched-pair analysis].

The effect of free transplanted jejunum autografts, inserted after resection of extensive squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx and hypopharynx is evaluated in terms of survival and the development of local and regional recurrences. In a matched-pair analysis, 22 patients with jejunum transplants were compared with 44 patients with the same performance status, in whom after laryngopharyngectomy, the pharynx had been closed with local mucosa. The cumulative survival rate was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method; the statistical comparison of the survival curves of the two groups was made wi

Adjuvant chemoradiotherapy in elderly patients with head and neck cancer: a monoinstitutional, two-to-one pair-matching analysis.

PURPOSE: About one fifth of patients with head and neck cancer are aged 70 years and older at the time of diagnosis. In these patients, risk factors (R1 status or extracapsular extension of lymph node metastases, ECE) often lead to a need for combined chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in the postoperative setting. However, there is considerable concern about the toxicity of such therapy in this age group. METHODS: Retrospective evaluation of the data of 53 patients ≥ 70 years of age who underwent surgery in our hospital between 1999 and 2015 for tumors of the oral cavity, the oropharynx, the hypopharyn

Oncological and quality-of-life outcomes after robotic versus open neck dissection in oral cavity cancer: a prospective matched-pair analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neck dissection remains the standard of care for regional control of nodal disease in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma, but the conventional trans-cervical approach leaves a visible scar and carries a recognized risk of shoulder morbidity. Remote-access robotic neck dissection has been proposed as a means of preserving oncological adequacy while improving cosmetic and functional outcomes. We report a prospective matched-pair comparison of retro-auricular robotic neck dissection and standard open neck dissection in patients with oral cavity cancer. METHODS: Sixty-four patients u
