Enhanced harm detection following maternal separation: Transgenerational transmission and reversibility by inhaled amiloride.

Early-life adversities are associated with altered defensive responses. Here, we demonstrate that the repeated cross-fostering (RCF) paradigm of early maternal separation is associated with enhancements of distinct homeostatic reactions: hyperventilation in response to hypercapnia and nociceptive sensitivity, among the first generation of RCF-exposed animals, as well as among two successive generations of their normally reared offspring, through matrilineal transmission. Parallel enhancements of acid-sensing ion channel 1 (ASIC1), ASIC2, and ASIC3 messenger RNA transcripts were detected transg

Changes in patients with gender-identity problems after parental death.

The authors studied the incidence of parental loss among 163 gender-disordered patients and an equal number of psychiatric control patients. An unusually high number of gender-disordered patients had lost their fathers, particularly during adolescence and early adulthood. Many of these patients showed shifts in gender identity in the year after loss, and during that period many requested surgical sex reassignment for the first time. Changes in the patient's relationship with the remaining parent and experiences related to loss of the father are discussed.

Childhood adversity and neural development: deprivation and threat as distinct dimensions of early experience.

A growing body of research has examined the impact of childhood adversity on neural structure and function. Advances in our understanding of the neurodevelopmental consequences of adverse early environments require the identification of dimensions of environmental experience that influence neural development differently and mechanisms other than the frequently-invoked stress pathways. We propose a novel conceptual framework that differentiates between deprivation (absence of expected environmental inputs and complexity) and threat (presence of experiences that represent a threat to one's physi

Individual deprivation, regional deprivation, and risk for oral clefts in Argentina.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of individual low socioeconomic status (SES) and deprived geographical area (GA) on the occurrence of isolated cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL±P) in Argentina. METHODS: This case-control study included 577 newborns with isolated CL±P and 13 344 healthy controls, born between 1992 and 2001, from a total population of 546 129 births in 39 hospitals in Argentina. Census data on unsatisfied basic needs were used to establish the degree of geographical area deprivation. An SES index for each individual was established, using ma

Comparison of community-level deprivation indices and their association with adverse pregnancy outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The Social Vulnerability Index, Maternal Vulnerability Index, and Area Deprivation Index measure community-level resilience to stressors, vulnerability to adverse maternal health outcomes, and socioeconomic disadvantages, respectively. These indices are commonly used to gauge community-level influence on health outcomes. Thus, for them to serve as effective clinical tools, their ability to predict adverse obstetrical outcomes must be evaluated. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the 3 indices and their associations with adverse pregnancy outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: This was a sec

Retrospective cohort study of the association between socioeconomic deprivation and incidence of gestational diabetes and perinatal outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Socioeconomic disparities have been shown to correlate with perinatal mortality and the incidence of type 2 diabetes. Few studies have explored the relationship between deprivation and the incidence of gestational diabetes (GDM). We aimed to identify the relationship between deprivation and incidence of GDM, after adjusting for age, BMI, and ethnicity. We also examined for relationships between deprivation and perinatal outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis of 23,490 pregnancies from a major National Health Service Trust in Northwest London was conducted. The 2019 E

Effect of undernutrition on morphine analgesia, haloperidol catalepsy and pentobarbitone sodium hypnosis in developing new born rats.

In the present study, half of the pups of a litter were undernourished by 12 h daily maternal deprivation from day 5 to day 18 postnatal and were subsequently nutritionally rehabilitated. Responses of CNS-acting drugs (morphine analgesia, pentobarbitone sodium hypnosis, haloperidol catalepsy) were studied at the age of day 9, 12 and 18 in maternally deprived and of day 25 in nutritionally rehabilitated new born rats as compared to that of their nourished littermates. The results showed that the response of these CNS-acting drugs was maximum at the age of day 9 postnatal and progressively decre…

Altered dendritic spine density in animal models of depression and in response to antidepressant treatment.

Olfactory bulbectomy, neonatal clomipramine administration, and maternal deprivation have been employed as animal models of depression. Each model is unique with respect to the experimental manipulations required to produce "depressive" signs, expression and duration of these signs, and response to antidepressant treatments. Dendritic spines represent a possible anatomical substrate for the enduring changes seen with depression and we have previously shown that chronic antidepressant drug exposure alters the density of hippocampal dendritic spines in an enduring fashion. The purpose of the pre…

The effects of an early stressful life event on sensorimotor gating in adult rats.

There is increasing evidence that patients suffering from schizophrenia have disturbances in the brain and other parts of the body indicative of a disturbed development. These findings have led to the so-called neurodevelopmental hypotheses of schizophrenia, which state that schizophrenia (or a predisposition for this disease) results from perinatal disturbances which affect the normal development of the central nervous system. In order to study such a possible relationship we have used early short-lasting (24 h) maternal deprivation, and studied the influence of this life event on prepulse in…

Do Autistic and Depressed Rats Express the Same Type of Maternal Care?

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is more frequently diagnosed in men. Nevertheless, through current diagnostic tools, women have also been found to be affected by this disorder, but in different ways. Few studies have been conducted regarding unique periods of life, such as motherhood. Yet, extant literature has already described the existence of a comorbidity between autism and postpartum depression. Thus, this study aimed to compare the maternal care sphere between two animal models of these diseases. Lactating rats were subdivided into three groups (n = 8 animals/group): 1) cont

Variation in Maternal Co-morbidities and Obstetric Interventions across Area-Level Socio-economic Status: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple studies indicate a significant association between area-level socio-economic status (SES) and adverse maternal health outcomes; however, the impact of area-level SES on maternal co-morbidities and obstetric interventions has not been examined. OBJECTIVE: To examine the variation in maternal co-morbidities and obstetric interventions across area-level SES. METHODS: This study used data from the Discharge Abstract Database that comprised birth data in Alberta between 2005-2007 (n = 120 285). Co-morbidities and obstetric interventions were identified using validated case-de

Perceived parental characteristics and reports of early parental deprivation in agoraphobic patients.

It is commonly believed that patients with agoraphobia have suffered more frequently from aberrant family experiences in childhood. Some authors have described an excess of parental deprivation and others have incriminated parental overprotectiveness. Recent studies have failed to confirm these impressions but, instead, find that agoraphobic patients recall deficits in parental warmth and care during their early years. This report of a Sydney case-control study adds support to the view that parental overprotectiveness in isolation is unlikely to place the child at greater risk of developing ag

Differential effects of short- and long-term early maternal separation on subsequent maternal behavior in rats.

Female Sprague-Dawley pups were separated from mothers every other day for 8 hr (long-term separation/LTS), 4 hr (short-term separation/STS), or 0 hr (no separation/NS) from postnatal day 2-20. In adulthood, they were mated and tested for maternal behaviors during two lactations. It was expected that females separated from mothers as pups would show deficits in maternal behavior as adults. Contrary to expectations, LTS showed better nest building and grouped young faster during both lactations. LTS were first to display aggression and displayed more aggression during the second lactation. Nota

Clinical, socio-demographic, and parental correlates of early autism traits in a community cohort of toddlers.

Identifying factors linked to autism traits in the general population may improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying divergent neurodevelopment. In this study we assess whether factors increasing the likelihood of childhood autism are related to early autistic trait emergence, or if other exposures are more important. We used data from 536 toddlers from London (UK), collected at birth (gestational age at birth, sex, maternal body mass index, age, parental education, parental language, parental history of neurodevelopmental conditions) and at 18 months (parents cohabiting, measures

Neighbourhood Deprivation and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus in Arizona From the AzPEARS Study.

BACKGROUND: The maternal population residing in rural areas, tribal lands or near the United States-Mexico border are at high risk for adverse pregnancy complications, notably gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Few studies have considered the socioeconomic status (SES) attributes of neighbourhoods on maternal health during gestation. Given that the national and global rate of GDM is rising, this analysis moves beyond individual-level factors and investigates the role of neighbourhood deprivation on GDM risk. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between neighbourhood deprivation and ri

The hidden penalties of gender inequality: fetal origins of ill-health.

This paper is concerned with the interconnections between gender inequality and maternal deprivation, on the one hand, and the health of children (of either sex) and of adults that the children grow into (again, of either sex). The basic message of the paper is that women's deprivation in terms of nutrition and healthcare rebounds on the society as a whole in the form of ill-health of their offspring-males and females alike-both as children and as adults. There are a variety of pathways through which women's deprivation can affect the health of the society as a whole. This paper focuses on the…

Rookery through rehabilitation: Microbial community assembly in newborn harbour seals after maternal separation.

Microbial community assembly remains largely unexplored in marine mammals, despite its potential importance for conservation and management. Here, neonatal microbiota assembly was studied in harbour seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) at a rehabilitation facility soon after maternal separation, through weaning, to the time of release back to their native environment. We found that the gingival and rectal communities of rehabilitated harbour seals were distinct from the microbiotas of formula and pool water, and became increasingly diverse and dissimilar over time, ultimately resembling the gingiv

Lasting impact of postnatal maternal separation on the developing BNST: Lifelong socioemotional consequences.

Nearly one percent of children in the US experience childhood neglect or abuse, which can incite lifelong emotional and behavioral disorders. Many studies investigating the neural underpinnings of maleffects inflicted by early life stress have largely focused on dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Newer veins of evidence suggest that exposure to early life stressors can interrupt neural development in extrahypothalamic areas as well, including the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST). One widely used approach in this area is rodent maternal separation (MS), wh

Presenting vertebral deformities in bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus calves from a protected population in northeast Scotland.

Photographs collected during a 23 yr photo-identification study in the Moray Firth were examined to assess the prevalence, type and severity of vertebral deformations present in bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus calves. Fifteen cases of presenting spinal anomalies (scoliosis, kyphosis, lordosis and combinations thereof) of variable severity were identified in 7.4% of all known calves from the population. Thirteen of the 15 anomalies were either manifest from birth or acquired from an early age, as ascertained from longitudinal sightings histories of their mothers. Most afflicted calves die
