INTRODUCTION: Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) of minor salivary glands (MSG) is a rare low-grade malignant neoplasm accounting for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. It usually affects the palate and the base of the tongue, and more rarely the parotid gland. We report a very rare maxillary localization.
CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old male patient, without prior medical history, was referred to us for a painless gingival lesion of the right maxilla, extending from tooth 14 to 17, having appeared a few months before. The clinical examination was otherwise normal. Biopsy proved the d…

Osteosarcomas are primary malignant bone tumours in which mesenchymal cells produce osteoid. It is generally the most common malignant bone neoplasm, although lesions of the jaw are uncommon. Osteosarcoma of the jaw (JOS) presents a lower incidence of metastasis and a better prognosis than osteosarcoma of the long bones. However, patients with JOS can exhibit advanced tumours, mainly when early diagnosis is not performed. This article reports on a case of an advanced osteosarcoma of the maxilla. A 38-year-old woman was referred for evaluation and treatment of recurrent fibrous dysplasia of the…

Postoperative actinomycosis infection caused by Actinomyces israelii is uncommon. Cervicofacial actinomycosis may appear as an opportunistc infection in the oral cavity. Initial diagnosis of this condition is difficult after oral surgery and the condition often is mistaken for more common odontogenic infections. Actinomycosis responds to antibiotic therapy but the condition recurs after therapy is discontinued. This article presents an unusual case of postsurgical actinomycosis that manifested in the cheek and appeared to be unrelated to the surgical extraction of an impacted maxillary third m…

Unicystic ameloblastoma is believed to be less aggressive and responds more favorably to conservative surgery than the solid or multicystic ameloblastomas. This report is a rare case of unicystic ameloblastoma of the maxilla that was treated by enucleation under suspicion of a radicular cyst related to a dens in dente. The neoplastic nature of the lesion became evident only when the enucleated material was available for histologic examination. With this report, the authors illustrate the importance and complexity of a differential diagnosis of lesions with a cystic aspect in the anterior regio…

Brown tumors are classic bony lesions of hyperparathyroidism. They usually occur in severe forms with osteolytic subperiosteal lesions. Facial bones are a rare localization: 2% of all cases. The aim of this study was to report a case of multiple craniofacial location of brown tumors and to discuss, within a review of the literature, the role of imagery in the diagnosis of this disease.

Historically, pulp-necrotizing agents were commonly used in endodontic treatments. They act quickly and devitalize the pulp within a few day … tissue necrosis and their surgical management. These cases showed severe alveolar bone loss in the maxilla, which affected the patients' quality of life and limited the restorative possibilities. As dentists, we should be aware of the hazardous effects of arsenic trioxide and should abandon its use. Because of its cytotoxicity, there is no justification …

Benign odontogenic tumors are characterized by imaging findings of expansile growth and well-defined margins with smooth borders, and their … th and lesions, especially the vertical relationship. When a lesion is suspected in the mandible or maxilla on CT, MR imaging, or nuclear medicine, these procedures must be performed as supplementary imaging techniques. CT demonstrates well the degree of bone resorption, osteosclerosis, cortical bone swelling, destruction, and calcification. MR imaging is …

As it becomes common for hyperparathyroidism to be detected earlier in the course of the disease, the bony manifestations of the disease are rarely seen. Presented here is a rare case of brown tumor of the maxilla as the presenting symptom of primary hyperparathyroidism.

We present an uncommon severe first branchial arch congenital malformation, in which complete unilateral bony fusion between the maxillary and mandibular processes was found in a newborn exposed to carbamazepine medication all through pregnancy. This condition interferes with oral feeding, intubation, growth and development. In a review of previously reported cases it was found that this anomaly was commonly associated with other abnormalities. The etiology of this malformation was uncertain in our case, as carbamazepine was not proven to be the definite cause.

A case of extensive aneurysmal bone cyst of the maxilla is described, with a recurrence 2 years after surgical curettage, treated by new curettage and radiotherapy. The pathogenesis of this pseudo-cyst is yet obscure. While CT (and MR) demonstrate characteristic fluid-fluid levels, the diagnosis remains histological. A long survey, based on radiography, is necessary to detect recurrence.

Seven cases of solid variant of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the maxilla are reported. Clinical and radiographic characteristics suggest origin within the maxillary alveolar bone. Swelling was minimal and disproportionate to the extensive, diffuse bone destruction universally present. Histologic features were typical of this neoplasm occurring in other sites and consisted of diffusely infiltrating islands of small, closely packed monomorphous cells with sparse cytoplasm, indistinct borders, and small hyperchromatic nuclei. Four of five patients with follow-up data died of their disease. This co…

A centrally located maxillary myxoma with malignant histologic appearance and aggressive clinical course is reported in a 40-yr-old man. The gelatinous polypoid tumor mass was diagnosed as a myxoma in the first biopsy. The tumor recurred rapidly (within 3 wk) eroding the bony structures of the maxillary sinus and the hard palate and infiltrating the adjacent soft tissues. In repeated biopsy (as well as reassessment of the first biopsy) the tumor was found to be composed of plump stellate cells, some of which were pleomorphic with atypical and bizarre mitotic figures. The amorphic myxoid matrix…
