PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To help the clinician understand the different odontogenic tumors found commonly in the maxillary sinus in terms of clinical and radiographic findings, diagnosis and treatment.
RECENT FINDINGS: The classification of odontogenic tumors has changed recently with the addition of the odontogenic keratocyst and calcifying odontogenic cyst (Gorlin cyst) from the realm of odontogenic cysts to being classified by the WHO as odontogenic tumors based upon their neoplastic biologic behavior. The odontogenic keratocyst is now called a keratocystic odontogenic tumor. The calcifying odon…

Cholesterol granuloma (CG) is a foreign body reaction to the deposition of cholesterol crystals, usually found in association to chronic middle ear diseases, being highly uncommon in the paranasal sinuses. This article reports a case of CG in the maxillary sinus of a 22-year-old man, manifesting as a swelling on the right maxilla associated with pain and nasal obstruction. Computed tomography (CT) imaging showed complete opacification of the right maxillary sinus with cortical bone expansion and destruction. Incisional biopsy showed a solid mass filling the sinus and histological examination s…

Extramedullary plasmacytomas (EMPs) are localized plasma cell neoplasms that occur within the soft tissues; by definition they cannot occur within bone. They account for 1-2% of all plasma cell growths and have a great predilection for the upper respiratory tract, without specific manifestations. Males are more frequently affected during the fifth and sixth decades of life. At initial presentation, multiple myeloma should be excluded. We report herein the case of a 63-year-old man with an EMP arising in the right maxillary sinus who was referred for surgical excision and postoperative radiothe…

OBJECTIVE: Organized hematoma of the maxillary sinus can develop by means of organization of hematoma in the unaerated maxillary sinus. To our knowledge, this is only the second article describing organized hematoma in the maxillary sinus.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We have observed eight cases of organized hematoma of the maxillary sinus recently and here we describe the clinical features (using CT scans and medical records), radiologic characteristics and pathologic findings.
RESULTS: The patients comprised five males and three females (mean age 58 years), all of whom had a history of frequent …

The work is based on the related literature and describes clinical features of plasmocytoma solitary of soft tissues and maxillofacial bones. A case of extramedullary maxillary sinus plasmocytoma a 39-year-old man is described. Attention has been called to diagnostic difficulties in this type of tumour.

The AA. describe the aetiopathogetical remarks, the actual nosologic and histopathologic arrangement, the clinical observations, the diagnostic and therapeutic trend of the cysts and pseudocysts arising from the mucosa of the maxillary sinus.

Cavernous haemangioma of the paranasal sinuses is very rare. We describe the X-ray and CT findings in a case of cavernous haemangioma which originated from the mucous membrane of the maxillary sinus and eroded the bony boundary of the sinus.

Pneumocele is a pathologically expanding, air-containing paranasal sinus most common in the frontal sinus. To our knowledge, only six cases of pneumoceles of the maxillary sinus have been reported so far; to these we add a seventh. The pathogenesis of pneumoceles has not been fully understood. It has been postulated that a one-way valve between the nasal cavity and the affected sinus leads to increased antral pressure and sinus expansion after nose blowing. By monitoring antral pressure through a transoral puncture, we demonstrated a one-way valve between the nose and the maxillary antrum. To …

A sinus pneumocele is a rare entity caused by obstruction of a paranasal sinus ostium. It is characterised by dilation and expansion of the sinus, with subsequent bony erosion. The most probable mechanism is air trapping in the paranasal sinus, via a one-way valve mechanism. The case presented concerns a 68-year-old Caucasian man, with recurrent episodes of acute rhinosinusitis. Clinical examination and subsequent imaging of the face, revealed a large pneumocele of the right frontal sinus that significantly eroded the posterior sinus wall. A large mucocele of the right maxillary sinus was also…

Ethmoid sinus osteomas are rare, benign, encapsulated neoplasms of the paranasal region. They can lead to various complications such as sinusitis, orbital cellulitis, proptosis, and diplopia. The treatment protocol of these lesions changed remarkably as powered instrumentation of functional endoscopic sinus surgery evolved and otolaryngologists gained experience. Here, the authors report a 30-year-old female who was diagnosed with a giant right-sided ethmoid sinus osteoma and discuss diagnostic and treatment modalities of these lesions in consonance with the current literature.

Silent sinus syndrome (SSS) is a rare disease characterized by spontaneous enophthalmos and hypoglobus secondary to collapse of the orbital floor in patients with asymptomatic maxillary sinusitis. Radiographic findings include ipsilateral maxillary sinus opacification, lateralization of the uncinate and middle turbinate, and infundibular occlusion. We present a case series of three patients with clinical and radiographic evidence of SSS but without maxillary sinus opacification. Although uncommon, an aerated maxillary sinus in patients with unexplained enophthalmos, hypoglobus, and maxillary a…

BACKGROUND: The optimal maxillary antrostomy size to surgically treat sinusitis is not well known. In this study, we examined clinical metri … c Lund-Mackay scores. During surgery and at their postoperative visit swabs were obtained from each maxillary sinus, and 16S DNA and inflammatory cytokine levels analyzed. The use of each patient as their own control allowed us to minimize confounding variables.
RESULTS: There was statistically significant improvement in SNOT-20 symptom scores postoperatively in …

Silent sinus syndrome (SSS) is a rare disorder involving bony remodeling of the maxillary sinuses, including collapse of the orbital floor. It is typically unilateral and seen in the setting of chronic maxillary sinusitis. Patients present with enophthalmos and hypoglobus occasionally accompanied by diplopia. The condition is generally diagnosed with CT imaging and treated surgically. While SSS is most often reported as very slowly progressive, we report a patient with evidence of significant remodeling of the maxillary sinus over a period of 5.5 months.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is 1) to obtain the area and volumes of the maxillary sinuses in patients affected by clinically unilateral sinus pathology by comparing the results to the contralateral sinus and 2) to determine the importance of the volumetric measures when diagnosing the percentage of sinus obliteration.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-centre observational retrospective clinical study was conducted in 214 patients with clinically unilateral sinus pathologies. Linear (mm), area (mm2) and volume (mm3) measurements were taken from Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images o…
