OBJECTIVE: Assessment of the incidence, diagnosis and treatment of three patients afflicted of extramedullary plasmacytoma located in the Waldeyer's ring, and one case afflicted of maxillary sinus disease.
PATIENTS: The localization of the masses was the palatine amygdala in two cases, and the rhinopharynx and maxillary sinus in the remaining two patients. Major symptoms were dysphagia respiratory failure with closed rhinolalia, and headache. Diagnosis was made by histological study of biopsied tissue. In every case, general illness or other site of localization were ruled out.
RESULTS: In o

Primary small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the paranasal sinuses is an extremely rare and distinctive tumor with aggressive clinical behavior. We report on a patient who had a small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ethmoid sinus with invasion of the upper aspect of the right maxillary sinus and medial aspect of the right orbit. After 2 cycles of chemotherapy that were unsuccessful, he underwent radiotherapy with complete tumor remission. Local recurrence was not identified after 11 months of follow-up; however, distant metastasis developed 2 months after radiotherapy. The natural histo

BACKGROUND: In AIDS patients who present with an oral neoplasm, Kaposi sarcoma is the tumor most frequently encountered, comprising 50% to 80% of all tumor occurrences. However, oral Kaposi sarcoma associated with erosion of underlying bone is a relatively rare finding. This report and review of the literature documents a case of AIDS-related oral Kaposi sarcoma exhibiting severe bilateral erosion of the maxillary alveolar ridges.
METHODS: An HIV-seropositive male with extensive maxillary Kaposi sarcoma and associated bilateral alveolar bone erosion presented for dental evaluation subsequent

BACKGROUND: The prelacrimal approach, termed endoscopic modified medial maxillectomy (EMMM), has recently been applied for treatment of inverted papilloma (IP) in the maxillary sinus. EMMM provides wider access to the maxillary sinus while preserving the inferior turbinate and nasolacrimal duct.
METHODS: We reviewed patients with IP in the maxillary sinus to compare the surgical results obtained by conventional surgery (ie, endoscopic maxillary sinus antrostomy or in combination with the Caldwell-Luc approach) with those obtained by EMMM.
RESULTS: All patients had a T3 on the Krouse staging

This article represents an overview of normal and pathological findings of the oral structures for the practicing radiologist. Some of the disease processes discussed are of dental etiology, whereas others are manifestations of systemic diseases. Normal tooth development is described followed by an overview of radiolucent, radiopaque, and mixed lucent-opaque lesions. In the radiolucent category, normal anatomical landmarks of the jaws include the mental foramen, manidbular canal, incisive canal and maxillary sinuses. Other lucencies that represent normal structures or variations include develo

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a benign intra-osseous neoplasm characterized by the formation of abundant collagen fibers. It arises most commonly in the jaws and exhibits local aggressiveness and high recurrence rates after local resection. An uncommon case of expansive DF involving the right maxilla, maxillary sinus, and inferior orbital wall of a 49-year-old man whose initial symptoms were similar to acute sinusitis is presented, and the criteria for diagnosis and clinical management are discussed.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) also known as undifferentiated high-grade pleomorphic sarcoma (UHPS) is a soft tissue sarcoma, composed of undifferentiated mesenchymal tumors possessed fibrohistiocytic morphology without definite true histiocytic differentiation. Head and neck localization is very rare, showing an incidence ranging from 4 % to 10 % in different series of investigations. The most frequent involved sites in UHPS are the neck and parotid, followed by the scalp, face, anterior skull base and orbit. Upper aerodigestive tract, lateral skull base and ear are rare locations. The

Eight cases of a highly aggressive undifferentiated carcinoma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are described. The patients, who ranged in age from 30-77 years, had multiple sinonasal symptoms, and each had involvement of the nasal cavity, maxillary antrum, and ethmoid sinus. Six tumors extended into the orbital bones, and five penetrated the cranial cavity. Five patients died of disease from 1 to 41 months after diagnosis (median: 4 months), and three are alive with tumor less than 1 year following diagnosis. Microscopically, the neoplasms formed nests, trabeculae, and sheets containi

Pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma (PMHE) is a rare vascular neoplasm with an intermediate to low-grade malignant potential. Only 5% of PMHEs occur in the head and neck. This tumor exhibits different histological patterns and mimics other vascular tumors, myoid tumors, or carcinomas. The distinction between these tumors can be a very challenging situation for pathologists. In this article, we report the first case, to our knowledge, of PMHE arising in the maxillary sinus, to highlight this uncommon entity and discuss differential diagnoses.

Odontogenic myxoma (OM) is a non-metastasizing neoplasm of mesenchymal origin, arising in the tooth-bearing areas of the jaws. When regarding the whole spectrum of differential diagnoses for osteolytic jaw lesions, OM constitutes a benign tumor rarely located in the maxilla. Radiographically, displacement of teeth and frequent involvement of the sinus will be found with advanced maxillary OM. The tumor can be removed by means of several techniques, ranging from conservative measures to extended surgical procedures that differ according to type of bone resection and reconstruction of the defect

In the years 1986-91, five patients with neoplasms of neurolemmal sheath were treated in the Department of Otolaryngology, Medical University in Cracow. Two patients suffered from malignant neurinoma (malignant neurinoma of orbit or maxillary sinus) and the other three had neurinoma (neurinoma of the floor of mouth, nasal cavity and neck). There were four men and one woman. The age of patients ranged from 23 to 52 years. The tumors were surgically removed, patients with malignant neurinoma required additional irradiation. Currently, no tumor recurrence has been noticed.

Sinonasal malignancies are known for their associated poor prognosis and diversity of histologic features. While poor prognosis is largely due to advanced disease at presentation, histologic features also play a significant role. Therefore, accurate pathologic diagnosis is of utmost importance. Here, we describe a 63-year-old male with chronic left-sided nasal obstruction and left-sided epistaxis who was found to have a large mass occupying most of the nasal cavity extending through the nasopharynx to just below the nasopharyngeal surface of the soft palate. During surgical excision, the mass
