Chronic Maxillary Sinusitis Caused by Denture Lining Material.

We report a case of chronic maxillary sinusitis caused by denture lining material entering through an oroantral fistula after tooth extraction. The patient was an 80-year-old female who visited us with a complaint of pus discharge from the right posterior maxilla. She had extraction of the upper right second molar and had her upper denture relined with silicone lining material. The patient noticed swelling of the right cheek and purulent rhinorrhea 20 days before her first visit to our clinic. Oral examination showed an oroantral fistula with a diameter of 3 mm in the posterior alveolar ridge …

WITHDRAWN: Antibiotics for acute maxillary sinusitis in adults.

Currently, two separate Cochrane reviews, ‘Antibiotics for acute maxillary sinusitis in adults’ and ‘Antibiotics for clinically diagnosed acute rhinosinusitis in adults’ describe the effect of antibiotics for acute rhinosinusitis. Although both Cochrane reviews study the same condition, they look at different populations (patients in which the diagnosis was based on clinical signs and symptoms and patients in which the diagnosis was confirmed by imaging). Because of this, the conclusions are different in these Cochrane reviews. This was confusing for clinicians who needed to read both Cochrane…

Cone-beam computed tomography evaluation of maxillary sinusitis.

INTRODUCTION: Dental pain originating from the maxillary sinuses can pose a diagnostic problem. Periapical lesion development eliciting inflammatory changes in the mucosal lining can cause the development of a sinusitis. The purpose of this study was to describe the radiographic characteristics of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis as seen on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans and to determine whether any tooth or any tooth root was more frequently associated with this disease. METHODS: Eighty-two CBCT scans previously identified as showing maxillary sinus pathosis were examined for sinu…

Chronic maxillary sinusitis associated with dental impression material.

A 62-year-old man was referred for routine treatment of hyperplasia of the mucosa in the anterior lower jaw. An oroantral fistula was detected in the right superior alveolar ridge. The patient had no complaints. Plain radiographs showed a radiopaque foreign body in the posterior region associated with opacification of the maxillary sinus. Computed tomography showed the same hyperdense foreign body located in the posterior lower part of the sinus and an abnormal soft tissue mass in the entire right maxillary sinus. When asked about sinusitis, the patient mentioned occasional episodes of pus tas

Modified endoscopic medial maxillectomy for chronic maxillary sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Recently, modified endoscopic medial maxillectomy (MEMM) has been described as an alternative technique to open maxillectomy for benign sinonasal neoplasms. However, few reports discuss the efficacy of MEMM for treatment of inflammatory disease of the maxillary sinus. We evaluate the efficacy of MEMM in treating chronic maxillary sinusitis. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwent MEMM for refractory inflammatory disease between December 2002 and September 2004 was performed. All patients were treated with MEMM alone or as part of an endoscopic sinus surgery proce…

Assessment of inflammation in noninfectious chronic maxillary sinusitis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Pathologic examination of the sinus mucosa and titration of inflammatory mediators in the sinus fluid were carried out to characterize inflammation in chronic sinusitis and determine whether patients with chronic allergic rhinitis (CAR) and sinusitis differ from patients with chronic nonallergic rhinitis (CNAR) and sinusitis. METHODS: Nine control subjects (patients requiring ear, nose, and throat surgery not related to sinusitis), 12 patients with CAR and sinusitis, and 13 patients with CNAR and sinusitis were investigated. Eosinophil cationic protein, tryptase, myelopero

Pharmacokinetic study of cefaclor in chronic maxillary sinusitis.

The pharmacokinetics of the maxillary sinus fluid were studied in 42 patients (26 males and 16 females), suffering from chronic maxillary sinusitis, after oral administration of 0.5g or 1g cefaclor. A thin plastic catheter, for sinus secretion sampling, was inserted in the sinus cavity and remained in place throughout the study. Sinus fluid levels of cefaclor (0.5g), measured by agar and well-diffusion microbiological method, ranged between 0.17-0.19, 0.28-0.42, 0.18-0.22 and 0.12-0.16 microgram/ml at 2, 4, 6 and 8 hour intervals respectively. Levels ranging between 0.15-0.26, 0.37-0.90, 0.23-…

Etiology and antimicrobial therapy of acute maxillary sinusitis.

Eighty-one adults with symptoms of acute sinusitis were studied by direct needle puncture and aspiration of the maxillary sinus (105 sinuses). Fifty-nine bacterial strains were isolated in titers of greater than or equal to 10(4) colony-forming units/ml; Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae accounted for 64% of the isolates. Other bacteria recovered included anaerobes (12%), Neisseria species (8.5%). Streptococcus pyogenes (3%), alpha-hemolytic Streptococcus (3%), non-group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus (3%), Staphylococcus aureus (2%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (2%), and Escheric

Ostium resistance in acute maxillary and frontal sinusitis.

Ostium function tests were performed in 18 normal maxillary and 6 normal frontal sinuses. Further 57 patients with acute maxillary and 16 patients with acute frontal sinusitis were followed using sinumanometry until resolution of infection occured. After initial obstruction of the ostium, resistance decreased exponentially until complete decongestion. Respiratory pressure changes in the sinus during forced nasal breathing are a positive sign for healing of sinusitis. The amplitude of these fluctuations should be documented during each lavage and facilitates indication for drainage procedures.

Endoscopic and histopathological observations of chronic maxillary sinusitis.

111 patients are studied in order to find possible relations between the endoscopic images and histopathological findings in the chronic maxillary sinusitis. The clasification of the different types of sinusitis is based on the aspect of the mucosa (normoplastic, hypoplastic, polypous, polypoido-polypous) and on the histological features (lymphoplasmocytic, eosinophilic, eosino-lymphoplasmocytic infiltration, low cellularity). The confrontation of the sinusoscopic and histopathological observations give interesting information, such as differenciation between stabilized and evolutive sinusitis…

[Prevention and treatment of post-implantation maxillary sinusitis].

The state of the nasal cavity, especially the region of the osteomyomatic complex, plays a significant role in the development of chronic maxillary sinusitis. Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis, as a complication of dental implantological treatment on the upper jaw, is increasingly common. The aim of the study was to increase the effectiveness of prophylaxis and treatment of odontogenic purulent upper jaw sinusitis during reconstructive operations on the alveolar region of the upper jaw. 3 groups of patients were examined: before dental treatment, after dental treatment in the development of odon…
