Mebendazole treatment of Echinococcus granulosus infection. Report of a case.

A patient with an Echinococcus granulosus cyst of the liver was treated with mebendazole for 94 days before operation. The serum levels of mebendazole varied from 39.4-274 ng/ml. After operation, cyst materials were inoculated into mice which developed hydatid cysts 10 months later. Intestinal absorption of mebendazole is poor and variable, and determination of serum concentrations is necessary during treatment. No apparently successful cases of drug treatment of E. granulosus infection have been verified by animal inoculation of cyst material; therefore, surgery must still be considered the t…

[Efficacy of mebendazole on Elaphostrongylus rangiferi in reindeer (author's transl)].

Elaphostrongylus rangiferi is a very common parasite in Scandinavian reindeer, causing losses due to cerebral nematodiasis and granulomatous parasitic pneumonias and also causing a discard of parts of the carcass at meat inspection. In limited experiments, the efficacy of mebendazole on E. rangiferi has been tested. It was found that daily treatment during a period of 10 days with 6 mg/kg body weight, given as medicated feed, resulted in a decreased fecal larval count at the 10th day and a total cessation of excretion of larvae at the 43rd day, indicating a good anthelmintic effect of mebendaz…

Levamisole compared to mebendazole in the treatment of Ancylostoma duodenale in Egypt.

Ancylostoma duodenale in 74 patients and Ascaris lumbricoides in 41 were treated with a single 150 mg dose of levamisole, a single 300 mg dose of mebendazole or the standard three-day regimen of 200 mg mebendazole daily. Levamisole cured all of the 25 hookworm patients and all of the seven Ascaris carriers to whom it was given and is recommended as the drug of choice in Egypt.

Efficacy of mebendazole and albendazole against Trichinella spiralis in mice.

Changes in the sensitivity of Trichinella spiralis to anthelmintic treatment during the first 3 days of infection in mice were studied. Oral administration of either mebendazole or albendazole at 6.25 mh/kg 2 hr after exposure to infection eliminated 95-100% of the worms as determined at necropsy on day 7 postinoculation. Beyond the first day of infection the sensitivity of the parasite to benzimidazole therapy was much reduced and an oral dose of 50 mg/kg was only partially but significantly active against the adult worms. Despite decline in drug sensitivity during the enteral phase, gavage a…

Treatment of soil-transmitted nematode infections in children with mebendazole.

Treatment of soil-transmitted nematodes with mebendazole was carried out in 137 children aged 6--15 years in Thailand. There were 100 cases of hookworm infection, 37 of ascariasis, 16 of trichuriasis and 32 of strongyloidiasis. Mebendazole was given at 100 mg twice daily for three consecutive days irrespective of age or weight. The reduction rates as seen by mean egg counts four weeks after treatment were 94.9% for hookworm infection, 100% for ascariasis and 93.9% for trichuriasis; the reduction rates of the mean larval count in 15 cases of strongyloidiasis was 82.1%. No side-effects were obse…

Further experience with mebendazole in the treatment of symptomatic trichuriasis in children.

Mebendazole (methyl-5-benzoylbenzimidazole-2-carbamate: Vermox), a broad spectrum anthelmintic, cured 22 (88%) children with symptomatic trichuriasis when given as a single 6-day course in a dosage of 100 mg twice daily. A further 3 (12%) were cured after a repeat 6-day course of therapy. Thus complete parasite eradication was achieved in all. The administration of an antidiarrheal agent, loperamide hydrochloride (Imodium), appeared to enhance the efficacy of mebendazole. Both drugs were well tolerated and completely free of any toxic effects.

[Clinical form of syngamiasis of pheasants and its treatment with mebendazole].

For the subdueing of the clinical form of the synagamosis of pheasants we successfully applied Mebendazole in the dose of 120 mg kg-1 of the feed. Because of the lack of drug we administered the dose of 120 mg kg-1 of the feed in one group in the course of seven days to a number of animals, the others (approx. 4000 animals) received the drug only in the course of three days. On the third to fourth day after the application of the preparation the clinical symptoms disappeared and mortality stopped. To the group intended for dissecting for the evaluation of the effectiveness of Mebendazole, the …

[The treatment of intestinal helminthiasis with mebendazole. 294 treated patients].

294 patients with slight intestinal helminthic infections have been treated with mebendazole, a broad-spectrum antihelminthic of high effectiveness and remarkably low toxicity. The high cure rates (91-95%) obtained in cases of trichuriasis, ascariasis and ankylostomiasis are in agreement with the results as published by other investigators. For helminthiases, the present patient sample was too limited to permit accurate evaluation. Nevertheless, mebendazole may be considered the drug of choice for treatment of trichuriasis in particular and for intestinal helminthic polyparasitism in general.

[Comparison of efficacy of powder and tablet of mebendazole in the treatment of strongyloidiasis].

We previously treated 47 patients with 100 mg of mebendazole (MBZ) twice a day by oral use for 5 days and this treatment was repeated 1, 3 and 4 weeks later. Although the cure rate was 100%, liver injury was observed in 48.9% of the patients. On this study, we reduced the periods of administration of MBZ (powder; 100 mg twice a day) to 4 days, and repeated it once after 3 days interval, and this initial treatment was performed one more time after 10 days interval (group 1). As Strongyloides stercoralis is mainly located in upper digestive systems, we used the drug reduced to powder for the pur…

Significance of particle size of mebendazole in the treatment of tapeworm infections.

Taenia hydatigena and Echinococcus granulosus in dogs have been used as a model to evaluate the response of these parasites to increasing doses of mebendazole in different dose forms (powder, micronized powder and tablets of micronized powder). Overall the micronized powder proved to be the most active, the tablets less so and the normal powder least active. Statistical confirmation was obtained that the use of this drug in different dose forms changed the rate of the response, suggesting that in the treatment of human hydatid disease caused by Echinococcus spp and cysticercosis caused by Taen…

Effect of plasma mebendazole concentrations in the treatment of human echinococcosis.

High oral doses of mebendazole were given for a mean period of 23 months to 22 patients with inoperable alveolar or cystic echinococcosis (Echinococcus multilocularis n = 18, E. granulosus n = 4). Clinical, morphological, biochemical and serological findings and plasma mebendazole levels were monitored. Clinical and biochemical improvement or stabilization was observed in 17 patients but the parasitic lesions did not decrease in size in most instances. One patient died shortly after onset of therapy with hemorrhage of esophageal varices. Three patients with alveolar and one with cystic echinoc…
