A 58-year-old woman was pointed out an abnormal electrocardiogram during a physical examination. A chest computed tomography( CT) scan revealed a 50-mm-sized cystic mass in the posterior mediastinum near the tracheal bifurcation. The mass exhibited growth during follow-up imaging, leading to a surgical resection. The tumor appeared as a smooth mass lesion with milky white and turbid internal content, suggestive of a chyle. The presence of a contiguous lymphatic duct and positive CD31 staining on histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a thoracic duct cyst. Thoracic duct cysts

A 51-year-old man presented with cough and pain in his upper chest for 1 week. Chest CT showed an ill-defined right paratracheal mass with slight enhancement in the upper mediastinum. A FDG PET/CT was performed showing focal increased FDG uptake with SUVmax of 4.7 in the mass. The mass was excised surgically. Histopathologic examination revealed infected bronchogenic cyst.

Mediastinal neurenteric cysts are the least common types of the bronchopulmonary foregut malformations, and their antenatal diagnosis is rare. We report a case of mediastinal neurenteric cyst diagnosed on antenatal ultrasonography at 28 weeks' gestation. A small intraspinal component and vertebral segmentation anomalies were also noted. The diagnosis was confirmed on postnatal magnetic resonance imaging and at the time of operation.

Parathyroid carcinoma is a rare malignancy of the parathyroid glands, and is the cause of primary hyperparathyroidism in fewer than one percent of cases. Symptoms are mainly due to local compression or hypercalcaemia secondary to markedly elevated parathyroid hormone levels. A minority of patients remain asymptomatic. Mediastinal parathyroid cysts are infrequent and may or may not be functioning. We present an 84-year-old woman with a giant functioning cystic parathyroid carcinoma located in the middle mediastinum. We performed a thorough MEDLINE and LILACS database search on published cases o

Extrapulmonary sequestration (EPS) is a rare congenital anomaly usually diagnosed during the first six months of life. It is mostly found between the left lower lobe of the lung and the diaphragm. Mediastinal presentation is extremely rare. We describe two identical cases of extrapulmonary sequestration mimicking mediastinal cystic mass in two boys. These emphasize the need to keep this diagnosis in mind when dealing with children presenting with anterior mediastinal mass.

We report the first case of a thymic cyst appearing in the course of treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the anterior mediastinum. The patient was a 9-year-old child in whom an abnormal contour of the left cardiac border persisted after chemotherapy, suggesting residual disease. The mass was found at thoracotomy to be a benign thymic cyst. The lesion was not present 2 years previously, and most likely represented cystic degeneration of the thymus, secondary to lymphomatous involvement. CT scan was not helpful in distinguishing the cystic lesion from residual lymphoma.

Hydatid cyst, which is caused by Echinococcus larvae, is a worldwide zoonotic disease which can affect virtually any organ in the body. Although the liver and lungs are the most commonly affected, it can occur in other parts of the body. Mediastinal hydatid cysts are incredibly rare, but imaging is crucial to diagnose and determine the extent of involvement and complications. In this article, we present a case of posterior Mediastinal hydatid cyst with adjacent chest wall and spinal involvement, diagnosed through chest CT and histopathology.

First described in 2005, the Mullerian derived cyst in the mediastinum is a rare finding with few subsequent reports. We report a case of Mullerian cyst occurring in the mediastinum of a 49-year-old female that was resected by robot-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. To our knowledge, this is the first report of robot-assisted resection of Hattori's cyst. Histopathologic analysis revealed ciliated Mullerian-type tubal epithelium positive for paired box gene 8 (PAX8), estrogen receptor (ER), and progesterone receptor (PR), confirming Mullerian differentiation. We also review the clinical presentat

Ever since Hattori et al. had described the mediastinal Mullerian cyst in 2005 there has been several new cases described in the literature. We report a 51-year-old woman with an incidentally found 2 cm × 3 cm mass in her left paravertebral mediastinum. She underwent thoracoscopic removal with the impression of a neurogenic tumor and was unexpectedly found with a ciliated cyst of Mullerian origin.

Bronchogenic cysts are an uncommon congenital malformation deriving from the primitive foregut. They are mainly unilocular, and respiratory distress is the most common presentation in pediatric patients. We describe the case of a 12-year-old girl with a huge infected mediastinal bronchogenic cyst which was resected via an axillary muscle-sparing thoracotomy.

Parathyroid cysts are rarely located in the mediastinum. This report describes a 45-year-old man with a mediastinal parathyroid cyst. Video-assisted thoracic surgery was successfully performed to remove the cyst.

A rare autopsy case of mediastinal bronchogenic cyst with malignant transformation is presented. The cyst had been located in the anterior mediastinum for at least 28 years in a 52 year old male. Chest X-ray findings showing rapid enlargement of the cyst and biopsy of the spine for lumbago made a clinical diagnosis as suspicious mediastinal cystic teratoma with malignant transformation metastasizing to the spine. Postmortem examination revealed that the cyst was located in the anterior mediastinum extending to the left pulmonary hilum and had no connection with the tracheobronchial tree. The c…

A case is presented of a young adult female who presented with nodular sclerosing Hodgkin's disease and a mediastinal mass that proved to be a thymic cyst. Prior to this illness, a chest x-ray had been obtained that did not show a mediastinal mass. This case illustrates that thymic cysts may arise simultaneously with mediastinal Hodgkin's disease, rather than as a result of treatment or being present congenitally.
