BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers are key in supporting mental health recovery, though the approach is poorly understood in many Asian countries. In Thailand, no recovery-oriented training currently exists, highlighting the need for a culturally adapted intervention that incorporates locally meaningful concepts and clarifies unfamiliar recovery principles. The present study aimed to culturally adapt an existing recovery training intervention (REFOCUS/REFOCUS-PULSAR) for use by healthcare workers in Thailand (REFOCUS-THAIREC).
METHODS: Experience-Based Co-Design (EBCD) was used to culturally adap

Forced migrants are at an increased risk of mental disorder compared to host country populations. To effectively address this, programmatic and policy responses need to be underpinned by rigorous evidence. Drawing on our experience conducting a systematic review of post-migration risk factors for mental disorder among asylum seekers and our appraisal of related systematic reviews, this paper discusses four challenges facing the field: (1)The reliance on Western conceptions of mental health.(2)The investigation, to date, of a relatively narrow range of potential risk factors.(3)The lack of cons

OBJECTIVE: The not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder (NCRMD) designation remains widely misunderstood by the public. Such misunderstandings may also be reflected in the media. As such, the aim of this study is to conduct a preliminary examination of the tone and content of recent Canadian newspaper articles where NCRMD is a major theme, comparing these to generic articles about mental illness.
METHODS: Articles about mental illness were gathered from major Canadian newspapers. These were then divided into two categories: 1) articles where NCRMD was a major theme and 2) arti

AIMS: To explore perspectives and experiences of healthcare professionals in the identification and support provision of mental health problems in adults living with type 1 diabetes.
METHODS: Using a qualitative research design, 15 healthcare professionals working in the United Kingdom were individually interviewed using a semi-structured interview schedule. Data were analysed using reflexive inductive thematic analysis.
RESULTS: Four themes were identified relating to barriers: time, knowledge, relationship between services and stigma. Three themes were identified relating to facilitators:

Therapy and rehabilitation of mentally ill persons abusing alcohol and other psychoactive substances have recently become a growing problem. Rehabilitation of these patients is particularly difficult because of the number of deficits accompanying schizophrenia. These deficits make traditional methods of substance dependence treatment impossible to apply in the case of mentally ill persons. The article presents results of the studies on cognitive deficits and limited social competencies of persons suffering from schizophrenia and dependent on alcohol and other psychoactive substances. We also p

BACKGROUND: Black people experience persistent inequalities in mental health outcomes, access and care quality compared with their white counterparts. These disparities are compounded by structural racism and a lack of culturally competent care within National Health Service (NHS) services. Creative arts therapies (CATs), including music, art, dance and drama therapy, may offer culturally relevant, non-verbal approaches to mental health support for this population.
OBJECTIVE: To explore how black young people with mental health challenges and NHS clinicians perceive the usefulness and cultura

BACKGROUND: Aging populations require physicians skilled in competencies essential for the care of older adults. The extent to which such geriatric competencies are included in non-geriatric postgraduate medical training programs is not known. Therefore this study examined the inclusion of 13 geriatric competencies in postgraduate training programs in Australia and New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
METHODS: Thirteen core geriatric competencies were identified and defined: aging physiology; health equity and sociodemography in aging; geriatric assessment and management; i

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental health problems are common yet often under-detected and under-treated in primary care and community services. International guidelines call for integration of mental health into perinatal care, but clarity is lacking on how best to equip non-specialist providers. Training and supervision programmes exist but vary widely in content and delivery, and their effectiveness and feasibility across settings are not comprehensively synthesised.
AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of perinatal mental health training for primary care and community-based providers on provider

This study examined factors influencing health information and mental health support seeking among individuals in U.S. prisons using the 2014 data from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies. Results showed that not only are age, race, health status, receiving health information (e.g., from health experts, friends, and other incarcerated individuals), and readiness to learn associated with health information seeking from the media, but so too are competencies such as literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills. Years of education moderated the association betwe

Background: Family caregivers of older adults with cognitive impairment commonly encounter heavy care burdens and elevated mental health risks, particularly depressive symptoms. This study aimed to explore the association between telehealth guidance service use and depressive symptoms among family caregivers of older adults with cognitive impairment, and to further examine the mediating role of caregiving competence and the moderating role of psychological resilience. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 491 family caregivers of older adults with cognitive impairment was conducted from August

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the perspectives of working-aged adults with post-stroke aphasia (PWA) towards what has or would help them in living well with aphasia (LWA). This paper reports the findings in relation to stroke care and its relevance for LWA.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This qualitative study was designed with input from a Public and Patient Involvement advisory group. We conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 14 PWA. Data were analysed following principles of reflexive thematic analysis.
RESULTS: Support services and LWA spanned five themes: Inpatient care; Sup

Childhood adversities profoundly affect mental and physical well-being. Effective psychosocial interventions in schools are crucial for mitigating adversities' impacts. Despite availability, many children lack access to those interventions in low-income countries. This study evaluates a universal school-based intervention in Lebanon for children, including refugees, aimed at improving personal competence and reducing mental health symptoms including anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. The study involved 1,920 Lebanese and Syrian chi

PURPOSE: Mental ill-health is common after stroke. Stroke survivors with aphasia are at higher risk of depression and anxiety, but communication impairment makes identification challenging. This study investigates if, how, and by whom mental health is assessed in Swedish stroke care, and whether resources to assess mental health in stroke patients with aphasia are available.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A survey was distributed to healthcare professionals (HCP) in stroke care and rehabilitation across Sweden. 981 complete responses were included.
RESULTS: HCP perceive mental ill-health as more com

The sequential intercept model (SIM) is used to reduce the penetration of persons with mental illness and substance use disorders in the criminal legal system. Its framework recommends identifying individuals with mental illness at various decision points of criminal case processing, from arrest to return from incarceration, so that they can be diverted toward treatment rather than permeate deeper into the criminal justice system. Communities frequently use the model to augment and inform jail diversion services. Despite the model's widespread adoption, individuals with serious mental illness,

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered virtual patient application (ChatGPT) on the development of Mental Status Examination (MSE) skills in psychiatric nursing internship students and to explore how this process is reflected in their experiences. This study employed a sequential explanatory mixed-method design, consisting of a quantitative pre/post-test phase followed by a qualitative phase. In the quantitative phase, the MSE Competency Assessment scores of 27 undergraduate psychiatric nursing internship students were evaluated using a pre-t

Psychiatric expertise in court implies specific requirements with regard to the formal aspects. On the one hand, they are determined by psychiatry as a branch of medical research and on the other by the fact that the expert testimony serves as a piece of evidence in court. Up to now psychiatrists have focused on the legal consequences of different kinds of diseases rather than on the formal aspects of expertise testimony. In this paper, we try to reconcile the specific requirements of psychiatric exploration with the requirements that have to be fulfilled in order to convince the court.
