A meta-analysis of theory of mind and 'mentalization' in borderline personality disorder: a true neuro-social-cognitive or meta-social-cognitive impairment?

BACKGROUND: It is widely accepted that borderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with significant impairments in mentalization and theory of mind (ToM) which are considered as closely related concepts by many authors particularly in psychoanalytical circles. However, for understanding interpersonal difficulties in personality disorders, it is important to distinguish neuro-social cognitive impairment from the abnormal meta-social-cognitive style of patients. METHODS: The current systematic review aimed to conduct separate meta-analyses of 'mentalization' [reflective functioning (RF]…

The ultra mentality - Foundations for maximising athletic mental performance.

For over 100 years there has been an academic pursuit of understanding and applying the principals of sport psychology to improve athletic performance. How is it that certain athletes do their best when it means the most while others "choke"? Meeting and exceeding the challenges that are presented can completely change the trajectory of any athlete's career. What is it that separates the good from the great and the great from the superstars? Is it motivation, preparation, determination, discipline, commitment, natural talent, physical strength, or work ethic? Maybe it is a combination of all o

Racism and mental health and the role of mental health professionals.

The concept of "race" and consequently of racism is not a recent phenomenon, although it had profound effects on the lives of populations over the last several hundred years. Using slaves and indentured labor from racial groups designated to be "the others," who was seen as inferior and thus did not deserve privileges, and who were often deprived of the right to life and basic needs as well as freedoms. Thus, creation of "the other" on the basis of physical characteristics and dehumanizing them became more prominent. Racism is significantly related to poor health, including mental health. The

Emergency department noise: mental activation or mental stress?

BACKGROUND: Healthcare professionals working in emergency medicine are often exposed to noisy environments. We determined if there is any difference in cognitive task performance required for clinical decision-making of healthcare professionals in a quiet compared with noisy environment and to assess the subjective experience of participants with regard to performance in a noisy environment. METHODS: This was a prospective cross-over study conducted at three academic hospitals in Johannesburg, South Africa. 41 doctors involved in the emergency management of patients were administered six matc

Mental and physical health and ageing in mental handicap: a review.

With some exceptions, the mental and physical health problems of elderly mentally handicapped people are similar to those of the elderly population as a whole. Psychiatric disorder is more common due to a higher frequency of behaviour disorders. Increased longevity has been accompanied by a progressive increase in deaths from age-related conditions and in individuals with Down's syndrome exposed a predisposition to premature senility and dementia. Service issues include general health care, preventive measures, provision for those with psychiatric and age-related problems, and staff training.

The effectiveness of a day hospital mentalization-based therapy programme for adolescents with borderline personality traits: Findings from Touchstone-Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) are at a substantial risk of harm to themselves and others, experience high levels of functional impairment and typically are high users of tertiary healthcare to address their mental health concerns. As indicators for BPD typically emerge in adolescence, a day therapy service in Bentley, Western Australia, Touchstone Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), was developed as an intensive intervention for adolescents with indicators for BPD and its associated symptomology. Touchstone utilizes mentalization-based thera…

Mentalizing Bodies: Explicit Mentalizing Without Words in Psychotherapy.

Introduction: Mentalization concerns the human ability to understand the actions of others (and oneself) in terms of intentional mental states. Theoretically, the notion has been described via the poles of automatic, non-verbal implicit mentalization as opposed to conscious and verbal explicit mentalization. In this article, we challenge this standard distinction by examining examples from psychotherapy. We argue that explicit mentalization can also be carried out via embodied non-verbal actions. Method: Four cases of real-life interaction from psychotherapy sessions are analyzed from the qual…

'Rich' and 'poor' in mentalizing: Do expert mentalizers exist?

Mentalization theory is concerned with the capacity to notice, and make sense of, thoughts and feelings in self and others. This development may be healthy or impaired and therefore, by extension, it may be theorized that expertise in mentalizing can exist. Furthermore, a continuum from impairment to expertise should exist within separate dimensions of mentalizing: of self and of others. This study hypothesized that three groups would be distinguishable on the basis of their mentalizing capacities. In a cross-sectional design, Psychological Therapists ('expert' mentalizers; n = 51), individual…

Mental illness and the provision of mental health services in prisons.

INTRODUCTION: Around 11 million people are held in prisons internationally, and criminal justice systems are overburdened with a high prevalence of multiple psychiatric disorders. In England and Wales over 200 000 people enter prisons each year, and in many cases, this facilitates their first contact with mental health services. SOURCES OF DATA: Research, evaluations, government reports and independent reviews. AREAS OF AGREEMENT: Screening, Triage, Assessment, Intervention and Re-integration (STAIR) are necessary components of prison mental health provision, offering an opportunity to impro

[Mental neuropathy].

Twelve cases of mental nerve neuropathy observed over a 20-month period are reported. Although benign in appearance, the condition frequently is of somber significance being most often, and sometimes initially, associated with malignant diseases. Cancer, and in particular breast cancer, is the most common cause, but malignant blood diseases may also be responsible. Metastatic lesions of the mandible and/or the mental nerve most probably explain why paresthesia and pain in the chin are relieved by local radiotherapy, combined or not with chemotherapy.

Cocaine use disorder, mental health diagnoses, and serious mental illness characteristics in mental health treatment.

Over half of treatment-seeking individuals with a cocaine use disorder have a co-occurring mental health disorder. Mental health disorder symptoms may impact an individual's functioning so severely that they are classified as a serious mental illness (SMI). However, there is variability in defining SMI, including the duration of symptoms, functional impairment, or specific diagnoses such as schizophrenia. This study answered the following questions among a national sample of adults with cocaine use disorder who received services from mental health treatment facilities from 2013 to 2021 (N = 35

AIMS: The second Singapore Mental Health Study (SMHS) - a nationwide, cross-sectional, epidemiological survey - was initiated in 2016 with the intent of tracking the state of mental health of the general population in Singapore.
