Mentoring Trainees With Lived Experience of Psychopathology: A Strengths-Based, Cultural-Humility Framework for Psychological Scientists.

Mental-health difficulties are prevalent among psychologists, yet professionals in the field are often discouraged from disclosing their lived experience with psychopathology because of persistent stigma. Lived experience with psychopathology has historically been treated as a deficit within the profession. However, emerging research and perspectives are beginning to challenge this status quo by highlighting that lived experience can be an asset in psychological science and practice. Despite this shift, there remains little guidance on how to navigate this topic in mentor-mentee relationships.

Impact of mentoring in the perioperative safety of ThuFLEP technique. A two-center retrospective comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic enucleation of the prostate (EEP) has become a gold standard for the surgical treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Thulium fiber laser enucleation (ThuFLEP), due to its characteristics, may facilitate quicker and easier adoption for novice surgeons. This study compares the feasibility and the safety of ThuFLEP technique between two novice EEP teams, one with an on-site mentor and one without. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study involved 110 patients across two centers. The first, with a mentor (Center M), performed 50 procedures, while the second, w

How does mentoring occupational therapists improve intervention fidelity in a randomised controlled trial? A realist evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Integrating complex interventions within healthcare settings can be challenging. Mentoring can be embedded within a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to upskill and support those delivering the intervention. This study aimed to understand, from a realist perspective, how mentoring worked to support implementation fidelity for occupational therapists (OTs) delivering a vocational rehabilitation (VR) intervention within the context of an RCT. METHODS: A realist evaluation using secondary data (emails, mentoring record forms, interviews) collected as part of an RCT. Three researchers…

Training Young Adult Peers in a Mobile Motivational Interviewing-Based Mentoring Approach to Upstream HIV Prevention.

Mentoring relationships are characterized by a sustained, high quality, and skill-building relationship between a protégé and mentor (Handbook of Youth Mentoring, Los Angeles, SAGE, 2014). Within prevention science, youth mentoring programs emphasize creating a specific context that benefits a young person. Program-sponsored relationships between youth and adults allow for creating a mentor-mentee partnership, but do not require the establishment of a strong bond in order to deliver prevention-focused activities and experiences (Handbook of Youth Mentoring, Los Angeles, SAGE, 2014). Motivation…

A regional Australasian experience of extended endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery for craniopharyngioma: Progression of the mentoring model.

Endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approaches to craniopharyngioma has become increasingly popular over the last 15 years. We present the … transsphenoidal approach for excision of craniopharyngioma, utilising and progressing the surgical mentoring model, can achieve adequate decompression of critical structures. Furthermore, our aggressive approach to divide and remove the involved pituitary stalk results in high rates of gross macroscopic resection with excellent long-term disease control wi …

Improving Transition to Employment for Youth With Physical Disabilities: Protocol for a Peer Electronic Mentoring Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Although youth with disabilities have much to gain from employment readiness programs, they are often excluded from or have limited access to vocational programs. One encouraging approach to address gaps in vocational programming is through peer electronic mentoring (e-mentoring), which may facilitate a smoother transition to adulthood by offering support to enhance coping skills. Despite the increase in online communities, little is known about their impact on vocational mentoring for youth with physical disabilities and their parents. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to devel…

The effectiveness of mentoring speech and language pathology students when they face patients with cleft palate.

INTRODUCTION: Mentoring programs can boost Speech & Language (SL) pathologists' satisfaction about their clinical skills, increasing their professional competence. A quality induction program provides a bridge for an efficient and comfortable transition between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice in front of clients. This transition can be especially difficult when the SL pathologist confronts patients with cleft palate. OBJECTIVE: To study whether a mentoring program can improve SL Pathology students' performance for treating patients with cleft palate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 18 SL …

Delaying second births among adolescent mothers: a randomized, controlled trial of a home-based mentoring program.

CONTEXT: Rates of rapid second births among low-income black adolescent mothers range from 20% to 50%. Most efforts to prevent rapid second births have been unsuccessful. OBJECTIVES: There were 4 objectives: (1) to examine whether a home-based mentoring intervention was effective in preventing second births within 2 years of the adolescent mother's first delivery; (2) to examine whether greater intervention participation increased the likelihood of preventing a second birth; (3) to examine whether second births were better predicted from a risk practice perspective or a family formation persp…

The Importance of Positive Social Support During Reentry From Prison: Examining the Role of Volunteer Mentoring.

Social support appears to be important in improving outcomes for incarcerated individuals during the reentry process not only in terms of general wellbeing but also in gaining employment and avoiding recidivism. Mentoring programs have become increasingly popular interventions that are intended to provide such support during reentry. However, research on mentoring programs is limited and tends to focus solely on the programs' impact on recidivism, a distal outcome. Through the use of semi-structured, in-depth interviews, this qualitative study focuses on more proximal outcomes, exploring how r…

A 4-Week Electronic-Mentoring Employment Intervention for Youth With Physical Disabilities: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Youth with disabilities are more likely to live in poverty and be unemployed compared with youth without disabilities. Such trends are often a result of a lack of support, inaccessible jobs, environmental barriers, and discriminatory attitudes toward people with disabilities. Youth with disabilities also face barriers in accessing vocational preparation programs. One encouraging way that could help address challenges that youth encounter is by providing support through electronic mentoring (e-mentoring). OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of a 4-w…

Maternal-antenatal attachment in young pregnant women: Social support, mentors, and fear of childbirth.

The goal of this study was to examine correlates of maternal-fetal attachment in a diverse sample of young pregnant mothers. Although studies have looked at social determinants of health and maternal-fetal attachment, none have examined correlates that may be more prevalent in younger populations including prenatal drug use or fear of childbirth. We analyzed data from a prospective cohort of 154 pregnant adolescents and young adults (75.5% Black/African American, 15.6% white, 7.5% biracial, 1.4% other) ranging from 14-21 years old. Participants were recruited early in pregnancy and completed o

Peer mentor training: Pathway to competency for facilitators of Healthy Mothers Healthy Families workshops.

BACKGROUND: Healthy Mothers Healthy Families (HMHF) is a women's health and empowerment programme designed to promote the health and well-being of mothers of children with a disability. An ongoing need to extend the reach of HMHF to more mothers, and increase scalability, resulted in development of a training programme based in principles of adult and transformative learning, to credential mothers as HMHF facilitators. The current study evaluated the process and outcomes of the competency training programme for new facilitators. METHODS: A pretest and posttest design with midway data collecti

Benefits of a mentoring support program for individuals with an eating disorder: a proof of concept pilot program.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this proof-of-concept pilot study was to assess the usefulness of a mentoring support program with a goal to improve hope for recovery in people with an eating disorder. RESULTS: Significant improvements (p ≤ 0.05) in hope for recovery were found for the mentees in the following domains: social relationships (p = 0.027), romantic relationships (p = 0.032), family life (p = 0.047), work (0.003) and overall scores (p = 0.003). There were no significant findings for any of the areas for the mentors. Despite this, mentoring programs that focus on improving hope may provide a…

Italian Society of Diabetology Mentor Award. The stages of Type 1A diabetes: retrospective and prospective.

In 1986, enough information was available based on studies by investigators from four continents to propose a model of the pathogenesis of Type 1A diabetes. The model divided pathogenesis into a series of stages with the proposal that insulin-dependent diabetes was a chronic autoimmune disorder. Long-term studies of non-diabetic identical twins of patients with Type 1A diabetes indicated that chronic loss of the ability to secrete insulin preceded the onset of diabetes in the presence of both genetic susceptibility and expression of anti-islet autoantibodies. It is now clear that the great maj
