BACKGROUND: Technological advances have made the laparoscopy procedure popular for simultaneous cholecystectomy and bile duct exploration. We aimed to assess the implementation of a structured mentorship program for training in laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE). We explored the effectiveness thereof in facilitating the learning of LCBDE as a single-stage treatment of common bile duct stones (CBD) with gallbladder in situ.
METHODS: The surgical databases of a mentor (experienced in LCBDE) and a mentee (new to LCBDE) were analyzed. The analysis retrospectively compared the mento

BACKGROUND: Healthy Mothers Healthy Families (HMHF) is a women's health and empowerment programme designed to promote the health and well-being of mothers of children with a disability. An ongoing need to extend the reach of HMHF to more mothers, and increase scalability, resulted in development of a training programme based in principles of adult and transformative learning, to credential mothers as HMHF facilitators. The current study evaluated the process and outcomes of the competency training programme for new facilitators.
METHODS: A pretest and posttest design with midway data collecti

Endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approaches to craniopharyngioma has become increasingly popular over the last 15 years. We present the results of our retrospective series of craniopharyngiomata resected by an endoscopic, endonasal approach at a low-volume service in Australasia. Between the years of 2009 and 2017, 11 patients underwent pure endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal resection for a craniopharyngioma at our institutions. The medical records, histopathology, intraoperative findings and patient imaging were retrospectively assessed. 11 patients were included with 5 male and 6 fema

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this proof-of-concept pilot study was to assess the usefulness of a mentoring support program with a goal to improve hope for recovery in people with an eating disorder.
RESULTS: Significant improvements (p ≤ 0.05) in hope for recovery were found for the mentees in the following domains: social relationships (p = 0.027), romantic relationships (p = 0.032), family life (p = 0.047), work (0.003) and overall scores (p = 0.003). There were no significant findings for any of the areas for the mentors. Despite this, mentoring programs that focus on improving hope may provide a

BACKGROUND: Although youth with disabilities have much to gain from employment readiness programs, they are often excluded from or have limited access to vocational programs. One encouraging approach to address gaps in vocational programming is through peer electronic mentoring (e-mentoring), which may facilitate a smoother transition to adulthood by offering support to enhance coping skills. Despite the increase in online communities, little is known about their impact on vocational mentoring for youth with physical disabilities and their parents.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to devel

A small pilot program of 9 youth 13 to 18 years old with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or Asperger's syndrome assessed the feasibility, acceptability, and potential efficacy of an individualized mentoring program. Youth met weekly for 6 months with trained young adult mentors at a local boys and girls club. Participants reported improvements in self-esteem, social anxiety, and quality of life. Participants, parents, mentors, and staff reported that the program improved participants' social connectedness. Although the pilot study was small, it provides preliminary data that me

INTRODUCTION: Mentoring programs can boost Speech & Language (SL) pathologists' satisfaction about their clinical skills, increasing their professional competence. A quality induction program provides a bridge for an efficient and comfortable transition between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice in front of clients. This transition can be especially difficult when the SL pathologist confronts patients with cleft palate.
OBJECTIVE: To study whether a mentoring program can improve SL Pathology students' performance for treating patients with cleft palate.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 18 SL

Learning to use a speech generating device (SGD), also known as a voice output communication aid (VOCA), is a challenging experience for new device learners. These learners typically rely on training from speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and may not meet other users who are competent SGD communicators. The aim of this study was to explore SLPs' perceptions of the important components of a program where adults who use an SGD mentor new learners. A total of 17 SLPs experienced in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) participated in one of three focus groups. The focus group discus

In 1986, enough information was available based on studies by investigators from four continents to propose a model of the pathogenesis of Type 1A diabetes. The model divided pathogenesis into a series of stages with the proposal that insulin-dependent diabetes was a chronic autoimmune disorder. Long-term studies of non-diabetic identical twins of patients with Type 1A diabetes indicated that chronic loss of the ability to secrete insulin preceded the onset of diabetes in the presence of both genetic susceptibility and expression of anti-islet autoantibodies. It is now clear that the great maj

BACKGROUND: Latino children in the US experience high rates of obesity, increasing their risk of subsequent diabetes. There are few clinical trials among low-income, Latino families to test interventions that account for and address their unique situation.
METHODS/DESIGN: This trial, conducted in a Head Start (early childhood education) setting, randomly assigns children 2-5 years of age who have obesity by CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines (at least 95th percentile body mass index) and their parents to one of three conditions: (1) control, (2) parent mentor with an

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: International nursing students (INS) enhance the diversity of the professional nursing workforce and offer universities substantial cultural, academic, economic, and social advantages. However, INS frequently face challenges in their educational experiences, particularly when targeted support is lacking. Guided by Bridges’ Transition Framework, this study examines the roles of a mentoring program on the academic, social, and personal development of undergraduate INS. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with seven participants (four mentors and three mentees)

BACKGROUND: Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) is a connective tissue disorder that is often diagnosed after diagnostic delays due to reliance on heightened clinical suspicion. Hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) bridge the gap between asymptomatic joint hypermobility and hEDS. Due to overlapping features and evolving diagnostic criteria, these entities are often discussed collectively as hEDS/HSD. Patients commonly present with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, prompting referral for specialized care.
OBJECTIVES: This review summarizes the diagnostic criteria, epidemiology, and GI ma
