[Mercury as an allergic factor].

A current opinion on the allergenic effect of mercury is presented with particular reference to its organic mixtures (merthiolat, thimerosal). The contribution of preventive vaccinations to the allergy occurrence is discussed. It is suggested that the number of sensitized persons will be increasing because of routine vaccination of health service workers and medical students against viral hepatitis, very common in Poland.

Methyl mercury, but not inorganic mercury, associated with higher blood pressure during pregnancy.

Prior studies addressing associations between mercury and blood pressure have produced inconsistent findings; some of this may result from measuring total instead of speciated mercury. This cross-sectional study of 263 pregnant women assessed total mercury, speciated mercury, selenium, and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in umbilical cord blood and blood pressure during labor and delivery. Models with a) total mercury or b) methyl and inorganic mercury were evaluated. Regression models adjusted for maternal age, race/ethnicity, prepregnancy body mass index, neighborhood income, parity, smoking…

Mercury sulfides are much less nephrotoxic than mercury chloride and methylmercury in mice.

Mercury sulfides (α-HgS, β-HgS) are frequently included in traditional medicines. Mercury is known for nephrotoxicity, their safety is of concern. To address this question, mice were orally administrated with Zuotai (54% β-HgS, 30mg/kg), α-HgS (HgS, 30mg/kg), HgCl2 (33.6mg/kg), or MeHgCl (3.1mg/kg) for 7days, and nephrotoxicity was examined. Animal body weights were decreased by HgCl2 and to a lesser extent by MeHg, but unaltered after Zuotai and HgS. HgCl2 and MeHg produced renal tubular vacuolation, interstitial inflammation and cell degeneration with protein cysts in the tubular lumen, whil…

Assessment of mercury exposure among small-scale gold miners using mercury stable isotopes.

Total mercury (Hg) concentrations in hair and urine are often used as biomarkers of exposure to fish-derived methylmercury (MeHg) and gaseous elemental Hg, respectively. We used Hg stable isotopes to assess the validity of these biomarkers among small-scale gold mining populations in Ghana and Indonesia. Urine from Ghanaian miners displayed similar Δ(199)Hg values to Hg derived from ore deposits (mean urine Δ(199)Hg=0.01‰, n=6). This suggests that urine total Hg concentrations accurately reflect exposure to inorganic Hg among this population. Hair samples from Ghanaian miners displayed low pos…

Mercury Reduction and Methyl Mercury Degradation by the Soil Bacterium Xanthobacter autotrophicus Py2.

Two previously uncharacterized potential broad-spectrum mercury (Hg) resistance operons (mer) are present on the chromosome of the soil Alphaproteobacteria Xanthobacter autotrophicus Py2. These operons, mer1 and mer2, contain two features which are commonly found in mer operons in the genomes of soil and marine Alphaproteobacteria, but are not present in previously characterized mer operons: a gene for the mercuric reductase (MerA) that encodes an alkylmercury lyase domain typical of those found on the MerB protein, and the presence of an additional gene, which we are calling merK, with homolo…

Phytoremediation of mercury- and methyl mercury-contaminated sediments by water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes).

Phytoremediation has the potential for implementation at mercury- (Hg) and methylHg (MeHg)-contaminated sites. Water hyacinths (Eichhornia crassipes) were investigated for their ability to assimilate Hg and MeHg into plant biomass, in both aquatic and sediment-associated forms, over a 68-day hydroponic study. The suitability of E. crassipes to assimilate both Hg and MeHg was evaluated under differing phosphate (PO4) concentrations, light intensities, and sediment:aqueous phase contamination ratios. Because aquatic rhizospheres have the ability to enhance MeHg formation, the level of MeHg in wa…

Mercury isotopes link mercury in San Francisco Bay forage fish to surface sediments.

Identification of sources of biologically accessible Hg is necessary to fully evaluate Hg exposure in aquatic ecosystems. This study assesses the relationship between Hg in forage fish and Hg in surface sediments throughout San Francisco Bay (SF Bay) and evaluates processes influencing the incorporation of Hg into the aquatic food web. We measured the Hg stable isotope compositions of two nearshore fish species and compared them with previously reported analyses of colocated intertidal surface sediments. Fish δ(202)Hg values (mass-dependent fractionation) demonstrated a distinct spatial gradie

Mercury concentrations at a historically mercury-contaminated site in KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa).

INTRODUCTION: A mercury (Hg) processing plant previously operating in KwaZulu-Natal Province (South Africa) discharged Hg waste into a nearby river system causing widespread contamination since the 1980s. Although the processing plant ceased operation in the 1990s, Hg contamination (due to residual Hg) remains significant. Previous studies in the area since the plant's closure have found elevated Hg concentrations in fish, and that these concentrations were as a direct consequence of widespread contamination of the Hg processing plant operations conducted between the 1980s and 1990s. OBJECTIV…

Human hair mercury levels in the Wanshan mercury mining area, Guizhou Province, China.

The total mercury (T-Hg) and methyl mercury (Me-Hg) concentrations in the hair were measured to evaluate mercury (Hg) exposure for the residents in Da-shui-xi Village (DSX) and Xia-chang-xi Village (XCX) in the Wanshan Hg mining area, Guizhou Province, Southwestern China. The mean concentrations in the hair of DSX residents were 5.5 ± 2.7 μg/g and 1.9 ± 0.9 μg/g for T-Hg and Me-Hg, respectively. The concentrations in the hair of XCX residents were 3.3 ± 1.4 μg/g and 1.2 ± 0.5 μg/g for T-Hg and Me-Hg, respectively. Hair Me-Hg concentrations were significantly correlated to T-Hg (r = 0.42, P < 0…

Sediment microbial community structure and mercury methylation in mercury-polluted Clear Lake, California.

Spatial and temporal variations in sediment microbial community structure in a eutrophic lake polluted with inorganic mercury were identified using polar lipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis. Microbial community structure was strongly related to mercury methylation potential, sediment organic carbon content, and lake location. Pore water sulfate, total mercury concentrations, and organic matter C/N ratios showed no relationships with microbial community structure. Seasonal changes and changes potentially attributable to temperature regulation of bacterial membranes were detectable but were less im…

Autometallographic detection of mercury in rat spinal cord after treatment with organic mercury.

Autometallography was used to localize mercury in rat spinal cord after intraperitoneal administration of methylmercuric chloride (200 micrograms CH3HgCl daily). The technique permits small amounts of mercury sulfides and mercury selenides to be visualized by silver-enhancement. Mercury deposits were observed by light microscopy only in neurons. In all of the spinal cord segments selected (first cervical segment, C1; fifth cervical segment, C5; sixth thoracic segment, T6; and first lumbar segment, L1) the mercury was observed with cumulative dosages of 6000 micrograms CH3HgCl and greater. Lami…

Quantum Chemical Investigation of Snow-Mercury Interactions and Their Implication of Mercury Deposition in the Arctic.

Elemental gaseous Hg is emitted into the atmosphere through various anthropogenic and natural processes. Mercury's different species and respective transport ranges, atmospheric physical and chemical transformations, and interaction with the earth's surfaces all contribute to the global cycling of toxic mercury. Under sunlight, halogens, ozone, and nitro species oxidize the emitted elemental Hg to gaseous Hg (II) molecules, which deposit onto the snow and ice surfaces in the Arctic. To investigate the fate of deposited mercury, a quantum chemical investigation was conducted using first-princip…

Distribution, alkylation, and migration of mercury in soil discharged from the Itomuka mercury mine.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the behavior of previously discharged mercury (Hg) released from the Itomuka Hg mine into the surrounding environment, especially into soil. Total-Hg (T-Hg), methylmercury (MeHg), and ethylmercury (EtHg) concentrations in the surface soil at eight sample sites around the mine were 3.8-64.2 mg/kg, 6.0-54.7 μg/kg, and undetected to 4.5 μg/kg, respectively. Core samples collected from seven of the eight sample sites showed that the vertical distribution of T-Hg was the highest in the surface soil layer and decreased rapidly in the lower layers. A stron…

Photodissociation Mechanisms of Major Mercury(II) Species in the Atmospheric Chemical Cycle of Mercury.

Mercury is a contaminant of global concern that is transported throughout the atmosphere as elemental mercury Hg0 and its oxidized forms HgI and HgII . The efficient gas-phase photolysis of HgII and HgI has recently been reported. However, whether the photolysis of HgII leads to other stable HgII species, to HgI , or to Hg0 and its competition with thermal reactivity remain unknown. Herein, we show that all oxidized forms of mercury rapidly revert directly and indirectly to Hg0 by photolysis. Results are based on non-adiabatic dynamics simulations, in which the photoproduct ratios were determi…
