Mercury bioaccumulation and speciation in coastal invertebrates: Implications for trophic magnification in a marine food web.

Studies on mercury bioaccumulation and biomagnification in coastal invertebrates in eastern Canada are limited, but these data are necessary to determine risk of mercury exposure effects in upper trophic level organisms. We quantified methylmercury (MeHg), total mercury (THg), and stable isotopes of δ13C and δ15N in 14 species of invertebrates in the Minas Basin. The overall mean concentration of MeHg (12.78 ± 11.23 ng/g dw) was approximately 10 times below the Canadian guideline for the protection of wildlife consumers like fish and birds of 157.20 ng/g dry weight (dw). Invertebrates at highe

Marine foraging ecology influences mercury bioaccumulation in deep-diving northern elephant seals.

Mercury contamination of oceans is prevalent worldwide and methylmercury concentrations in the mesopelagic zone (200-1000 m) are increasing more rapidly than in surface waters. Yet mercury bioaccumulation in mesopelagic predators has been understudied. Northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) biannually travel thousands of kilometres to forage within coastal and open-ocean regions of the northeast Pacific Ocean. We coupled satellite telemetry, diving behaviour and stable isotopes (carbon and nitrogen) from 77 adult females, and showed that variability among individuals in foraging loc

Possible interferences of mercury sulfur compounds with ethylated and methylated mercury species using HPLC-ICP-MS.

The HPLC-ICP-MS coupling technique is able to separate and detect methyl, ethyl and inorganic mercury isotopes specifically. An identification of ethyl mercury(+) is not possible when the widely used sodium tetraethylborate derivatisation method in combination with GC-AFS/AAS or ICP-MS techniques is performed because it contains ethyl groups. An unidentified compound with the same retention time as ethyl mercury was found in the HPLC chromatograms of industrial sewage samples and humic-rich soils of microcosm experiments after applying water vapour distillation. We also observed such unidentifi…

Chronic mercury exposure in Late Neolithic/Chalcolithic populations in Portugal from the cultural use of cinnabar.

Cinnabar is a natural mercury sulfide (HgS) mineral of volcanic or hydrothermal origin that is found worldwide. It has been mined prehistorically and historically in China, Japan, Europe, and the Americas to extract metallic mercury (Hg(0)) for use in metallurgy, as a medicinal, a preservative, and as a red pigment for body paint and ceramics. Processing cinnabar via combustion releases Hg(0) vapor that can be toxic if inhaled. Mercury from cinnabar can also be absorbed through the gut and skin, where it can accumulate in organs and bone. Here, we report moderate to high levels of total mercur

Mercury bioaccumulation in stream fish from an agriculturally-dominated watershed.

Bioaccumulation of mercury in freshwater fish is a complex process driven by environmental and biological factors. In this study, we assessed mercury in fish from four tributaries to the Red Deer River, Alberta, Canada, which are characterized by high surface water mercury concentrations. We used carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotopes to examine relationships between fish total mercury (THg) concentrations, food web dynamics and patterns in unfiltered THg and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations. We found that THg concentrations exceeded the tissue residue quality guideline for the p

Using speciated isotope dilution with GC-inductively coupled plasma MS to determine and unravel the artificial formation of monomethylmercury in certified reference sediments.

Speciated isotope-dilution mass spectrometry (SID-MS) is claimed to be an absolute method; however, it has been found to be affected by artifact monomethylmercury (MMHg) formation in sediments. The determination of MMHg in sediments was carried out by SID-MS after open-focused microwave extraction. The extracted mercury species were then ethylated and separated by capillary gas chromatography (CGC). Isotope ratios (peak area ratios at different masses) were measured by on-line ICP-MS detection of the CGC-separated compounds. Reproducibility of 202Hg/201Hg isotope ratio measurements were 0.60%

Investigation of the biochemical controls on mercury uptake and mobility in trees.

Atmospheric elemental mercury (Hg(0)) enters plant stomata, becomes oxidized, and is then transferred to annual growth rings providing an archive of air Hg(0) concentrations. To better understand the processes of Hg accumulation and translocation, the foliage of quaking aspen and Austrian pine were exposed to Hg(0), and methylmercury (MeHg) or Me198Hg via roots, in controlled exposures during the summer. Isotopic measurements demonstrated, in a laboratory setting, that the natural mass-dependent fractionation observed was the same as that measured in field studies, with the lighter isotopes be

Methylmercury degradation and exposure pathways in streams and wetlands impacted by historical mining.

Monomethyl mercury (MMHg) and total mercury (THg) concentrations and Hg stable isotope ratios (δ(202)Hg and Δ(199)Hg) were measured in sediment and aquatic organisms from Cache Creek (California Coast Range) and Yolo Bypass (Sacramento Valley). Cache Creek sediment had a large range in THg (87 to 3870ng/g) and δ(202)Hg (-1.69 to -0.20‰) reflecting the heterogeneity of Hg mining sources in sediment. The δ(202)Hg of Yolo Bypass wetland sediment suggests a mixture of high and low THg sediment sources. Relationships between %MMHg (the percent ratio of MMHg to THg) and Hg isotope values (δ(202)Hg a

Use and legacy of mercury in the Andes.

Both cinnabar (HgS) and metallic mercury (Hg(0)) were important resources throughout Andean prehistory. Cinnabar was used for millennia to make vermillion, a red pigment that was highly valued in pre-Hispanic Peru; metallic Hg(0) has been used since the mid-16th century to conduct mercury amalgamation, an efficient process of extracting precious metals from ores. However, little is known about which cinnabar deposits were exploited by pre-Hispanic cultures, and the environmental consequences of Hg mining and amalgamation remain enigmatic. Here we use Hg isotopes to source archeological cinnaba

Metamorphosis in chironomids, more than mercury supply, controls methylmercury transfer to fish in High Arctic lakes.

Lake-dwelling Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) are monitored internationally as a sentinel species for effects of atmospheric mercury deposition on Arctic fresh waters. We investigated the control of mercury supply and biological processes on the methylmercury (MeHg) content of their main food, aquatic chironomids, in 22 lakes and ponds in the Canadian High Arctic. Total mercury (THg) concentrations in sediment (corrected for organic matter content) increased with drainage basin size, suggesting a gradient in mercury loading among study sites. MeHg concentrations in sediment and water were low

Pathways of CH3Hg and Hg ingestion in benthic organisms: an enriched isotope approach.

Mercury is a widespread contaminant in marine food webs, and identifying uptake pathways of mercury species, CH3Hg(+) and Hg(2+), into low trophic level organisms is important to understanding its entry into marine food webs. Enriched stable isotope tracers were used to study benthic vs. pelagic pathways of CH3Hg(+) and Hg(2+) uptake via food to the infaunal estuarine amphipod, Leptocheirus plumulosus. Algal cells differentially labeled with isotopically enriched CH3Hg(+) or Hg(2+) were added simultaneously to the sediment and water column of microcosms, and Hg species were monitored in amphip

Practical and theoretical considerations for the determination of δ13 CVPDB values of methylmercury in the environment.

RATIONALE: Analytical methods that can identify the source and fate of mercury and organomercury compounds are likely to be useful tools to investigate mercury in the environment. Carbon isotope ratio analysis of methylmercury (MeHg) together with mercury isotope ratios may offer a robust tool to study environmental cycling of organomercury compounds within fish tissues and other matrices. METHODS: MeHg carbon isotope ratios were determined by gas chromatography/combustion-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC/C-IRMS) either directly or following derivatization using sodium tetraethylborate. Biomagnification of mercury in selected species from an Arctic marine food web in Svalbard.

Concentrations and biomagnification of total mercury (TotHg) and methyl mercury (MeHg) were studied in selected species from the pelagic food web in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard. Twelve species of zooplankton, fish and seabirds, were sampled representing a gradient of trophic positions in the Svalbard marine food web. TotHg and MeHg were analysed in liver, muscle and/or whole specimens. The present study is the first to provide MeHg levels in seabirds from the Svalbard area. The relative MeHg levels decreased with increasing levels of TotHg in seabird tissues. Stable isotopes of nitrogen (delta(15)N

Isotope fractionation and environmental applications of metal isotopes in terrestrial systems.

This study reviews isotope fractionation and its environmental applications in water and soil systems for seven metal isotope systems-chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn)-that have been increasingly investigated and applied in environmental studies. This review focuses on common and contrasting isotope fractionation behaviors among these metal isotope systems, as well as their applications to contamination source tracing. For most geochemical processes and studied solid phases, Cd, Cr, Hg, Mo, and Ni isotopes generally exhibit high

Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 triggered by Kerguelen volcanism.

Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) are associated with global warming and carbon cycle perturbations during Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE2, ~94 Ma) and the Mid-Cenomanian Event (MCE, ~96.5 Ma). However, there is still no consensus on the role volcanism played as a trigger, or its source - previously ascribed to the Caribbean LIP or High Arctic LIP. Here, we use Mentelle Basin sedimentary mercury (Hg) concentrations to determine the timing of volcanism, and neodymium (Nd) and strontium (Sr) isotopes for sedimentary provenance. High Hg concentrations compared to Northern Hemisphere records, and a shif

Direct detection of the mercury-nitrogen bond in the thymine-Hg(II)-thymine base-pair with (199)Hg NMR spectroscopy.

We have observed the 1-bond (199)Hg-(15)N J-coupling ((1)J((199)Hg,(15)N) = 1050 Hz) within the Hg(II)-mediated thymine-thymine base pair (T-Hg(II)-T). This strikingly large (1)J((199)Hg,(15)N) is the first one for canonical sp(2)-nitrogen atoms, which can be a sensitive structure-probe of N-mercurated compounds and a direct evidence for N-mercuration.

Algal blooms reduce the uptake of toxic methylmercury in freshwater food webs.

Mercury accumulation in fish is a global public health concern, because fish are the primary source of toxic methylmercury to humans. Fish from all lakes do not pose the same level of risk to consumers. One of the most intriguing patterns is that potentially dangerous mercury concentrations can be found in fish from clear, oligotrophic lakes whereas fish from greener, eutrophic lakes often carry less mercury. In this study, we experimentally tested the hypothesis that increasing algal biomass reduces mercury accumulation at higher trophic levels through the dilution of mercury in consumed alga

Novel methodology for the study of mercury methylation and reduction in sediments and water using 197Hg radiotracer.

Mercury tracers are powerful tools that can be used to study mercury transformations in environmental systems, particularly mercury methylation, demethylation and reduction in sediments and water. However, mercury transformation studies using tracers can be subject to error, especially when used to assess methylation potential. The organic mercury extracted can be as low as 0.01% of the endogenous labeled mercury, and artefacts and contamination present during methylmercury (MeHg) extraction processes can cause interference. Solvent extraction methods based on the use of either KBr/H2SO4 or HC
