Estimating food consumption, micronutrient intake and the contribution of large-scale food fortification to micronutrient adequacy in Tanzania.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential contribution of large-scale food fortification (LSFF) towards meeting dietary micronutrient requirements in Tanzania. DESIGN: We used household food consumption data from the National Panel Survey 2014-15 to estimate fortifiable food vehicle coverage and consumption (standardised using the adult female equivalent approach) and the prevalence at risk of inadequate apparent intake of five micronutrients included in Tanzania's fortification legislation. We modelled four LSFF scenarios: no fortification, status quo (i.e. compliance with current fortification con…

Impact of multiple micronutrient versus iron-folic acid supplements on maternal anemia and micronutrient status in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Multiple micronutrient supplements could increase hemoglobin and improve micronutrient status of pregnant women more than iron supplements alone or iron with folic acid. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of multiple micronutrients with those of iron supplements alone or iron with folic acid, on hemoglobin and micronutrient status of pregnant women. METHODS: Studies were identified in which pregnant women were randomized to treatment with multiple micronutrients, or with iron with or without folic acid. A pooled analysis was conducted to compare the effects of these supplements on…

Prevalence of micronutrient deficiency based on results obtained from the national pilot program on control of micronutrient malnutrition.

Micronutrient deficiency is a serious public health concern in most developing countries. In India, iron deficiency, vitamin A deficiency, and iodine deficiency disorder are of greatest public health significance. In addition, subclinical zinc deficiency, flourosis, and fluoride-deficient dental caries are important areas of concern. The National Pilot Program on Control of Micronutrient Malnutrition was launched in 1995 to address these problems and the Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition of the All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health (Calcutta) was entrusted to coordinate its a

Education and micronutrient deficiencies: an ecological study exploring interactions between women's schooling and children's micronutrient status.

BACKGROUND: Formal education can be a nutrition-sensitive intervention that supports the scale-up and impact of nutrition-specific actions. Maternal education has long been linked to child survival, growth, and development while adult earnings and nutrition are tied to years in school as a child. However, less is known about the relationship between maternal education and the micronutrient status of children, women and the general population. METHODS: Using country-level data and an ecological study design, we explored the global associations between women's educational attainment and: a) ane

Bioavailability of micronutrients: stable isotope techniques to develop effective food-based strategies to combat micronutrient deficiencies.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies, in particular those of iron, vitamin A, iodine, and zinc, is unacceptably high, especially among infants, children, and women of childbearing age in developing countries. Effective food-based strategies to combat these public health problems are therefore urgently needed. OBJECTIVE: As only a fraction of dietary iron, zinc, and provitamin A carotenoids is absorbed and utilized, i.e., bioavailable, access to information on micronutrient bioavailability is crucial in the development of food fortification strategies and interventions base

Impact of intermittent fasting on micronutrient intake.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This narrative review aims to evaluate the current evidence on how intermittent fasting regimens - including alternate-day fasting (ADF) and time-restricted eating (TRE) - affect micronutrient intake in adults. RECENT FINDINGS: Several randomized controlled trials have reported reductions in the intake of key micronutrients such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, folate, vitamin C, and various B vitamins during ADF and TRE. These deficiencies are largely driven by lower total energy intake and reduced consumption of nutrient-dense foods on fasting days. While some studies fo…

Micronutrient supplementation in patients with malabsorptive conditions.

Patients with malabsorptive conditions can develop micronutrient deficiencies, even if they receive vitamins, minerals, or trace elements through their enteral or parenteral nutrition. Additionally, clinicians have faced challenges with micronutrient supplementation during parenteral product shortages and when transitioning patients from parenteral to enteral/oral nutrition. Evaluating micronutrient deficiencies through laboratory markers has various limitations, including that many are acute phase reactants, may not reflect storage status, or may not be readily available in clinical practice.

Micronutrient deficiency and supplements in schoolchildren and teenagers.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The essential micronutrients are corner stones in the functional and physical development. Early deficiency has life-long consequences. While awareness about iron deficiency is relatively high, it remains lower for other micronutrients. This review aims at reporting on recent data and attracting attention to the high prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in school-age and adolescent individuals. RECENT FINDINGS: Iron deficiency anaemia remains highly prevalent worldwide and the most frequent deficiency but can be corrected with simple tools ranging from food fortificatio…

[Social jetlag: possibilities of micronutrient support].

The concept of social jetlag refers to asynchronous communication of a person's biological clock with tempo of modern living, which occurs mainly as a result of intensive work. At the core of social jetlag is sleep deprivation or chronic sleep restriction caused by social factors: pervasive use of electronic solutions and networks, intensive round the clock operation, chronic diseases. The aim of the work was to determine vitamins, minerals, and other micronutrients, the availability of which is important for supporting the organism in case of circadian rhythm sleep disorders and sleep restric…

Cobalt: An Essential Micronutrient for Plant Growth?

Cobalt is a transition metal located in the fourth row of the periodic table and is a neighbor of iron and nickel. It has been considered an essential element for prokaryotes, human beings, and other mammals, but its essentiality for plants remains obscure. In this article, we proposed that cobalt (Co) is a potentially essential micronutrient of plants. Co is essential for the growth of many lower plants, such as marine algal species including diatoms, chrysophytes, and dinoflagellates, as well as for higher plants in the family Fabaceae or Leguminosae. The essentiality to leguminous plants is

Micronutrient supplementation in adults with HIV infection.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient deficiencies are common among adults living with HIV disease, particularly in low-income settings where the diet may be low in essential vitamins and minerals. Some micronutrients play critical roles in maintenance of the immune system, and routine supplementation could therefore be beneficial. This is an update of a Cochrane Review previously published in 2010. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether micronutrient supplements are effective and safe in reducing mortality and HIV-related morbidity of HIV-positive adults (excluding pregnant women). SEARCH METHODS: We performed …

[Micronutrient deficiencies and celiac disease in Pediatrics].

Celiac disease (CD) is apparently changing in its clinical presentation, from chronic diarrhea and malnutrition to a silent clinic at older ages. The basal enteropathy of CD induces macro-and micronutrient malabsorption. Described micronutrient deficiencies in CD include: Fe, Zn, Cu, folate, Ca, vitamin E, D, B12 and B6, with complex transporter mechanisms altered. Ferropenic anemia has been described in CD as the exclusive sign and the most common extraintestinal sign. Zn deficiency is frequent in CD, associated with growth delay and immune alterations. Even though the main basis for vitamin
