The mining industry has one of the highest rates of occupational disease across all industries. However, occupational skin disease (OSD) is not commonly reported in this industry, although has been estimated to affect up to 51 people per 100,000 workers, with contact dermatitis accounting for the majority of cases. Racemases have been applied for the synthesis of enantiomerically pure compounds through the deracemization methods. Mandelate racemase from Pseudomonas putida was the only enzyme that catalyzes the interconversion of mandelate enantiomers. Using genome mining approaches, we identified 9 mandelate racemases (MRs). Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have become increasingly widely used to determine regions of the genome which may contain loci influencing the risk of neurological disorders. While linkage studies have identified genes that cause a number of Mendelian disorders, linkage analysis is less well suited for the more common complex disorders. This has led to the widespread use of GWAS for that purpose. Here we present and discuss several of the major extant GWAS in neurological disorders, their limitations, and implications of findings to date.

Employing incidence data from the Quebec Tumor Registry, we examined the relative risks of cancer of all sites for the years 1969-73 in the asbestos-mining, rural, and metropolitan counties of Quebec Province, Canada. Generally, rates for males exceeded those for females, and the relative risks in the asbestos-mining counties for 7-10 different sites of cancer, all of low incidence, were from 1.50 to 8.08 times those of other rural counties of the Province for both sexes.
