Proteus mirabilis, a well-known urinary tract pathogen, is increasingly recognized as a food safety concern due to its frequent detection in meat products, particularly poultry. Sporadic reports indicate gastrointestinal symptoms linked to P. mirabilis, but the relationship between its genome, antibiotic resistance, and variable pathogenicity remains unclear. In this study, 142 P. mirabilis isolates were collected from broiler carcasses and processing environments in wet markets and industrial facilities to assess contamination levels. Thirty-six representative isolates were characterized for …

Proteus mirabilis is a zoonotic pathogen primarily associated with urinary tract infections but also implicated in systemic infections. While its clinical importance is well-established, its potential reservoirs and transmission routes remain underexplored, particularly in arthropod vectors. This study set out to determine the prevalence of P. mirabilis in the form of viable minimal infectivity rate in ticks collected from Isiolo and Kilifi Counties in Kenya. Ticks were sampled from cattle, camels, sheep, and goats. The collected ticks were surface sterilized and homogenized using zirconia bea…

OBJECTIVE: Proteus mirabilis is the one of most important pathogens of catheter-associated urinary tract infections. The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) P. mirabilis severely limits antibiotic treatments, which poses a public health risk. This study aims to investigate the resistance characteristics and virulence potential for a collection of P. mirabilis clinical isolates.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Antibiotic susceptibility testing revealed fourteen MDR strains, which showed high resistance to most β-lactams and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and a lesser extent to quinolones. All the MDR …

Proteus mirabilis is a common opportunistic zoonotic pathogen, and its ongoing acquisition of antimicrobial resistance genes poses challenges to clinical treatments. Human-sourced whole genomic sequencing of human P. mirabilis isolates has been reported, but pig-sourced isolates have not been thoroughly investigated even though these animals can serve as reservoirs for human infections. In the current study, we report a molecular epidemiological investigation to unravel the antimicrobial and virulence gene risk factors for P. mirabilis contamination in 9 pig farms in 3 different cities in Zhej…

BACKGROUND: Proteus mirabilis is an opportunistic pathogen, causing a variety of community-acquired and nosocomial illnesses. It poses a potential threat to patients via the production of β-lactamases, which decrease the efficacy of antimicrobial treatment and impair the management of its pathogenicity. Hence, this study was established to determine the prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs), AmpC, and carbapenemases of P. mirabilis isolated from various clinical specimens.
RESULTS: Proteus mirabilis was identified in 20.7% (58/280) of specimens. ESBL producers were present at a…

Proteus mirabilis is one of the most common causes of complicated urinary tract infections (UTI), especially in catheter-associated UTIs. The increased resistance to antibiotics, among P. mirabilis isolates has led us to search for alternative antibacterial agents. In this study, genome of a lytic Proteus phage VB_PmiS-Isfahan, isolated from wastewater, and active against planktonic and biofilms of P. mirabilis, isolated from UTI, was analyzed. Accordingly, the genome was sequenced and its similarity to other phages was assessed by the Mauve and EasyFig softwares. "One Click" was used for phyl…

Euchambersia mirabilis is an iconic species of Permo-Triassic therapsid because of its unusually large external maxillary fossa linked through a sulcus to a ridged canine. This anatomy led to the commonly accepted conclusion that the large fossa accommodated a venom gland. However, this hypothesis remains untested so far. Here, we conducted a μCT scan assisted reappraisal of the envenoming capacity of Euchambersia, with a special focus on the anatomy of the maxillary fossa and canines. This study shows that the fossa, presumably for the venom-producing gland, is directly linked to the maxillar…

BACKGROUND: Proteus mirabilis is a common uropathogen responsible for urinary tract infections (UTIs). The emrA gene encodes the EmrA protein, which is a critical component of the EmrAB-TolC multidrug efflux pump. In addition to its established role in antibiotic resistance, emerging evidence indicates that EmrA is also implicated in bacterial stress adaptation and virulence-associated processes. Nevertheless, its specific functions in the pathogenesis of P. mirabilis remain unclear.
RESULTS: To define the function of EmrA in pathogenicity of P. mirabilis, this study combined phenotypic assay…

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Proteus mirabilis is a frequent causative agent of urinary and wound infections in both community and hospital settings. It develops resistance to expanded-spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs) due to the production of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) or plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamases (p-AmpCs). Recently, carbapenem-resistant isolates of P. mirabilis emerged due to the production of carbapenemases, mostly belonging to Ambler classes B and D. Here, we report an outbreak of infections due to carbapenem-resistant P. mirabilis that were observed in a psychiatric hospital …

A male mixed breed dog was presented with two large wounds, extending the epidermis, dermis, and fascia: one at the dorsum of the thoracolumbar region and the other at the lumbosacral area. Lesions had extended inconspicuously to the dorsum of thorax affecting a large area, which showed regions with necrotic and crepitating foci after shaving. Based on histopathological and bacterial culture examinations, polymicrobial necrotizing fasciitis (NF) was diagnosed. Using the Bruker MALDI Biotyper identification technique, Macrococcus caseolyticus, Proteus mirabilis, and Escherichia coli were identi…

Proteus sp. rods are opportunistic human pathogens, isolated mainly from urinary tract infections. They are naturally susceptible to most antimicrobials. However, acquisition of genes for extended spectrum beta-lactamases on plasmids and irrational antimicrobial treatment increase amount of multidrug resistant strains and lead to their selection. The aim of this study was to evaluate production of ESBLs by double disc synergy test and antimicrobial susceptibility of P mirabilis strains by disc diffusion method. Strains included into the study were isolated from patients of dr A. Jurasz Univers…

An imipenem-resistant mutant of Proteus mirabilis lacked a 26 kDa outer membrane protein (OMP). It has previously been postulated that this protein is a porin, but the present mutant, which was cross-resistant to mecillinam but not to other beta-lactams, proved as permeable to carbapenems as its parent. A mecillinam-selected mutant had similar cross-resistance yet retained the 26 kDa OMP, confirming that this protein was not important to resistance. In contrast, cefoxitin-selected mutants retained the 26 kDa protein but had diminished expression of major 41 and 44 kDa OMPs and showed reduced u…

Two strains of Proteus mirabilis, IpR1 and IpR2, resistant to both imipenem and mecillinam, but susceptible to other beta-lactams were isolated from blood cultures of patients who had been treated with imipenem. Strain IpR1 was isolated in the same sample as a P. mirabilis IpS1 which was susceptible to imipenem and mecillinam. Strains IpR1 and IpR2 did not produce a beta-lactamase and their outer membrane protein profiles were similar to those of IpS1 and P. mirabilis ATCC 29906. Electrophoretic profiles of penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) showed a decrease in PBP 1A of strains IpR1 and IpR2…
