Multiple pterygium syndrome is a rare, inherited disorder manifested by growth retardation, facial or genital anomalies, and widespread musculoskeletal deformities. Pterygia are the predominant hallmark of the syndrome. Five children with multiple pterygium syndrome were treated from 1978 to 1987. Treatment involved both upper and lower pterygia and contractures. The results of treatment and modalities used are discussed and a protocol suggested.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the frequency of musculoskeletal diseases in patients with cervical vertigo, as well as the relations of neck tenderness, psychiatric symptoms, and autonomic abnormalities with pain and age.
METHODS: One hundred and seventy-six patients with cervical vertigo were analyzed. The groups with or without pain and the groups aged > or =66 years or < or =65 years old were compared.
RESULTS: Musculoskeletal diseases were very common (present in 86%). In the group with pain, neck tenderness, CMI III-IV, and orthostatic hypotension were significantly more frequent. In the older g

Many nonrheumatic diseases of childhood present with musculoskeletal abnormalities. A significant proportion of these disorders have a genetic basis, many involving defects in structural proteins of the connective tissue. Chief among these are collagen mutations resulting in spondyloepiphyseal dysplasias and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, as well as fibrillin defects associated with Marfan's syndrome. A variety of other chromosomal anomalies are associated with musculoskeletal abnormalities, and may result from as yet unidentified connective tissue defects. In addition, metabolic diseases may result …

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic disorder with an associated anomaly in chromosome 15, and has been reported to inc … 13 in the NSG; P=0.0253]. No intergroup difference was found regarding age, genotype, BMI, or other musculoskeletal abnormalities. However, scoliosis was found to be significantly associated with limb malalignment (P=0.04589). Six patients showed kyphotic deformity associated with scoliosis. In addition, kyphoscoliosis was found to be significantly associated with the presence …

Congenital lipomatous overgrowth, vascular malformations, epidermal nevi and scoliosis/skeletal/spinal anomalies (CLOVES) syndrome is an extremely rare overgrowth syndrome characterized by complex vascular malformations. Management requires an interdisciplinary approach including debulking operations for tissue overgrowth, embolization therapy for vascular malformations and management of chronic pain due to congenital and recurrent vascular overgrowth and from scar tissue from surgical interventions. Here, we present a 35-year-old female with complex medical history due to CLOVES syndrome, wit

Selecting bulls for reproductive soundness requires that the bull be structurally sound, free of abnormalities that impair his ability to produce adequate numbers of motile, morphologically normal spermatozoa, and be able to successfully complete coitus. This review discusses the diagnosis and etiology of abnormalities of the penis, prepuce as well as common musculoskeletal conditions that prevent normal pasture breeding soundness. A review of testicular and thermoregulation addresses the potential impact of musculoskeletal disorders on normal sperm production.

Sternal cleft accompanied by pectus excavatum is a rare type of congenital anomaly of the chest wall. Surgical correction is a suitable approach to restore the heart, large vessels, and respiratory dynamics early. This is a report of the successful surgical correction of upper sternal cleft anomaly accompanied by pectus excavatum in a child. The pectus excavatum was corrected without the use of any prosthesis. The cleft was closed by primary approximation with enough dissected pectoralis major muscle and partial thymectomy, mobility, and flexibility ensured by pectus correction. The integrity

INTRODUCTION: Sternal cleft (SC) is a rare congenital deformity that results from failure of sternal bar fusion. Sternal cleft can be categorized as superior partial, inferior partial, or complete. Each form of SC can present as an isolated defect or in association with other congenital deformities, which presents a unique challenge for reconstructive surgeons. In our systematic review, we aim to summarize the published experience on repair of SCs and present a pragmatic approach to help guide reconstructive planning.
METHODS: A systematic review was performed to identify all reported SC case

The normal human chromosome complement consists of 46 chromosomes comprising 22 morphologically different pairs of autosomes and one pair of sex chromosomes. Variations in either chromosome number and/or structure frequently result in significant mental impairment and/or a variety of other clinical problems, among them, altered bone mass and strength. Chromosomal syndromes associated with specific chromosomal abnormalities are classified as either numerical or structural and may involve more than one chromosome. Aneuploidy refers to the presence of an extra copy of a specific chromosome, or tr

Orthopaedic abnormalities are frequently recognised in patients with myopathy but are hardly systematically reviewed with regard to type of myopathy, type of orthopaedic problem, and orthopaedic management. This review aims to summarize recent findings and current knowledge about orthopaedic abnormalities in these patients, their frequency, and possible therapeutic interventions. A MEDLINE search for the combination of specific terms was carried out and appropriate articles were reviewed for the type of myopathy, types of orthopaedic abnormalities, frequency of orthopaedic abnormalities, and p

Conjoined twins or Siamese twins are identical twins whose bodies are joined in the uterus. Craniopagus is a condition in which the heads of the two twins are joined. Craniopagus parasiticus is a rare condition in which one of the twins is rudimentary in form and parasitic on the other. Few cases of craniopagus parasiticus are reported in literature; here, we present one such rare occurrence.

To successfully examine the musculoskeletal system sonographically, one must understand the normal musculoskeletal anatomy and function and be aware of the abnormal processes that affect the musculoskeletal structures. The goal of this review article is to provide a systematic approach to sonographic examination of the musculoskeletal system. The general sonographic appearances of normal and abnormal muscles, tendons, ligaments, bursae, and nerves are reviewed. The article then applies this general information to specific clinical applications by reviewing the normal anatomy of and specific pa

Spindly leg syndrome (SLS) is a relatively common musculoskeletal abnormality associated with captive-rearing of amphibians with aquatic larvae. We conducted an experiment to investigate the role of environmental calcium and phosphate in causing SLS in tadpoles. Our 600-tadpole experiment used a fully-factorial design, rearing Atelopus varius tadpoles in water with either high (80mg/l CaCO3), medium (50mg/l CaCO3), or low calcium hardness (20mg/l CaCO3), each was combined with high (1.74 mg/l PO4) or low (0.36 mg/l PO4) phosphate levels. We found that calcium supplementation significantly impr

AIMS: This study was undertaken to describe the pattern of vertebral, intraspinal and other organ anomalies in patients with congenital scoliosis and to determine the correlation between them.
METHODS: Complete medical and radiological records of 227 consecutive patients with congenital scoliosis were analysed. The radiographs were examined for type of vertebral anomaly, location and severity of deformity. The median curve progression index (MCPI) was calculated in 198 patients. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the whole spine was analysed to detect the presence of cord abnormalities.
