We report on a rare case of a patient with rhinocerebral mucormycosis that presented as intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). A 54-year-old man who was immunosuppressed had ophthalmoplegia. Four days later, ICH developed in his left frontal lobe. The ICH was surgically removed totally. Pathology specimen surgically obtained from brain surface adjacent to hematoma cavity showed blood vessels filled with Mucor mycelium. Combined with surgical findings, venous occlusion by Mucor mycelium might be the cause of ICH in the patient.

Expression of the 43 kDa glycoprotein (gp43) was analysed in several Paracoccidioides brasiliensis isolates. Using one- and two-dimensional analysis of crude cellular extracts, it was shown that protein expression in yeast and mycelium was dependent on the isolate analysed. In two strains, in both yeast and mycelium cells. gp43 was present, whereas expression was restricted to the yeast phase of two other strains. The clinical implications of this phase-specific gp43 expression are uncertain.

Terconazole, a new triazole ketal, is found to be highly active in vitro on a wide range of yeasts and mycelium-forming fungi. The in vitro activity depends largely on the medium used. In vitro it is a potent antifungal agent in preventing the morphogenetic transformation of the yeast into the (pseudo-)mycelium form of Candida albicans. In vivo terconazole is highly active in topical treatment of various experimental models of dermatophytosis and candidosis. It also possesses moderate oral broad-spectrum activity. No side effects were observed.

Long-term storage of microorganisms is essential for maintaining a consistent laboratory strain collection. To prevent a reduction in viability of Botrytis stocks, we can make use of the naturally formed survival structures of this fungus, conidiospores and sclerotia. Conidiospore stocks are the preferred method of storage and can be stored in 20% glycerol at -80°C for up to 30 years. The research examined how the extract of Ganoderma lucidum mushroom mycelium affects the functional state of erythrocytes in rats with fructose-induced metabolic syndrome (MetS). MetS was induced by a high-carbohydrate diet: for 42 d, the animals consumed a 10% fructose solution instead of drinking water.
