We used an amoeba model to study the intracellular growth and cytotoxicity of clinical strains of Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. massiliense (Mabsm) isolated from 2 patients (one with cystic fibrosis, the other one with idiopathic bronchiectasis) during the early (smooth colonies) and late stage (rough colonies) of chronic pulmonary infection. We describe Mycobacterium abscessus infections in immunocompetent children with cervicofacial lymphadenitis and localized soft tissue infections. The presence of multi-nodal disease was significantly associated with refractory infection in cervicofacial lymphadenitis. Almost all children were treated with both antimicrobials and surgery, and close to half required repeat surgery.
