Between July 1973 and June 1981 systemic fungal infections were found in 27 of 270 autopsies of patients with hematologic malignancies: in 16 aspergillosis, in 6 candidiasis, in one aspergillosis and candidiasis, and in 4 mucormycosis. The frequency increased from 6% during the first 6 years to 25% during the last 2 years (p = 0.025). Fever despite antibiotics and new pulmonary infiltrates were the major symptoms. In only 6 of 16 patients did microbiological findings support the clinically suspected diagnosis. Systemic fungal infections were the principal cause of death in 12 patients. Because

The clinical picture of pulmonary mycoses is described and discussed. The diagnosis of tropical pulmonary mycoses is--in contrast to the native mycoses--relatively simple with respective serological tests and intracutaneous reactions. For the diagnosis the differentiation of fungi or molds is of utmost importance.

Various infectious agents are classical risk factors for cancer including bacteria, viruses and parasites. There is less evidence concerning the implication of fungal infection in carcinogenesis. The role of chronic Candida infection in the development of squamous cell carcinoma has been suspected for years. Candida sp are more prevalent in potentially malignant disorder and cancer of the oral mucosa. Other epidemiological evidence of a link between Candida infection and cancer is what is observed in patients with Autoimmune Polyendocrinopathy Candidiasis Ectodermal Dystrophy (APECED). Oral an

The classification of human fungal infections in medical reports is sometimes confusing. This occurs because some agents act as opportunistic organisms in immunosuppressed patients, whereas others affect the subcutaneous tissue and also cause disseminated or systemic disease. Finally, some clinically similar infections caused by aerobic actinomycetic bacteria and others caused by parasites (rhinosporidiosis) have been traditionally included in the descriptions of mycotic diseases. This contribution provides the clinician with a classification of subcutaneous, systemic, and opportunistic fungal

We show the records about diagnosed mycoses in a hospital in Mexico City in two periods of time: from 1967 to 1977 and from 1993 to 1997. In the former 15,429 patients were studied and in the latter, 5,998. Striking differences among frequency, etiological agents and clinical outcome, were observed. The most frequent infections in both lapses were the superficial ones, however the most recent scores showed a notorious increase in opportunistic infections. We diagnosed only one histoplasmosis case during the period from 1993 to 1997. Etiological agents have also changed, dermatophytes frequency…

The present advancement and generalization of oral mycosis is probably due to different factors associated to the progress and development of the countries and the presence of medically compromised patients and immunosupressor therapies. From all these mycoses, oral candidosis is the commonest, but histoplasmosis and paracoccidioidomycosis are also important. The main clinicopathologic and therapeutic features of those oral diseases are reviewed in this paper.
