Sixty-five fly maggots were retrieved from the nasal cavity of an unconscious 64-year-old man who had been admitted 18 days earlier with diabetic hyperosmolar coma. The larvae were identified as Cochliomyia macellaria, an organism commonly associated with myiasis in the United States. The clinical time sequence indicates that this infection was acquired in the hospital. This incident provides further evidence that immobile and debilitated patients are at risk to acquire myiasis.

In three years we encountered two patients with hospital-acquired myiasis, a rarely reported nosocomial problem. Both patients were elderly and had lengthy thoracic surgery in August in the same operating room. Larvae removed from the nares of one patient and from the chest incision of the other were of the same species, Phaenicia serricata. There was no evidence of tissue destruction or invasion in either case. Investigation revealed several factors that contributed to the presence of flies in the operating room. After a presumed environmental access site was closed and insecticide spraying w…

Myiasis has become increasingly prevalent, particularly when human activity is carried out in environments with poor hygiene. We reported two cases of human myiasis in this paper. All of myiasis cases initially presenting to the Emergency Department of Kilis State Hospital in Turkey were identified. We present one case of ophthalmomyiasis caused by Oestrus ovis and one case of cutaneous myiasis caused by Lucilia sericata. Both of the myiasis cases were reported from rural area case limiting the exposure to adult flies and exterminating the flies will play important role in preventing the myias…

The myiasis caused by larvae of Rhinoestrus purpureus and Rhinoestrus usbekistanicus (Diptera, Oestridae) are of importance in the horse medicine since it causes severe respiratory diseases. Therefore an accurate diagnosis of rhinoestrosis is central to its epidemiology and control. This paper describes concisely a molecular diagnostic tool that overcomes the current inherent diagnostic constraints and, therefore, is of importance to understand the actual incidence and epidemiology of this myiasis in live horses.

Dipterous larvae were found in the appendices from two postmortem examinations. The single maggot in the first case was not immediately identified in the sections. However, when the posterior end of the larva was recovered from the unsectioned portion of the appendix, it was identified as a maggot of the genus Sarcophaga. The first case was believed to be a case of "pseudomyiasis,+ i.e., the accidental entrapment of a swallowed larva passing through the digestive tract. In the second case, the appendix contained numerous larvae with great variation in sizes and stages of development of the mou…

Myiasis refers to the infestation of humans or other vertebrates by dipteran larvae that feed on living or necrotic tissue. It occurs worldwide, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Furuncular myiasis presents as a painful, erythematous, furuncle-like nodule with a central breathing pore, often accompanied by serous discharge and a sensation of movement. In Central and South America, it is caused by Dermatobia hominis, whereas in sub-Saharan Africa, Cordylobia anthropophaga is the predominant causative species. While D. hominis transfers its eggs to humans via blood-feeding arthro…
