Electromicroscopial changes were observed in arterioles, nerves, and striated skeleton muscle cells in a case of clinically and histologically definite polyarteritis nodosa with polyneuropathy. Inflammatory infiltrates were found in and around arteriolar walls; motor nerves were partly demarkated and presynaptic motor endplates were degenerated. The myofibrills of skeleton muscle cells showed a disorganization that is regarded as the morphological substrate for the clinically observed muscular weakness in this case.

Twenty-four male weanling rats were fed either Cu-adequate (8.0 mg/kg diet) or Cu-deficient (0.4 mg/kg diet) diets until 9 or 11 wk of age. Horses on several farms in Mozambique were inadvertently fed with a concentrate containing 69 ppm monensin. The horses developed acute signs of toxicity and several died. The animals were depressed, anorectic and paretic before death. Epistaxis was observed in 1 case. Petechial haemorrhages were present in the muscles, heart, lungs, gastrointestinal tract and spleen in 3 horses necropsied. No significant histopathological cardiac and skeletal muscle lesions were seen, except in 1 case, in which there was focal loss of myofibrils.

A case is reported of fatal cardiomyopathy in an 8-year-old female German Shepherd after standard chemotherapy with doxorubicin for splenic hemangiosarcoma. The main gross lesion was a moderate bilateral cardiac ventricular dilation with diffusely pale myocardium. Histological analysis revealed severe multifocal vacuolar degeneration of cardiomyocytes, myocytolysis, myofibril loss, myocardial fibrosis, and edema. Myocardial fiber vacuolization and myocytolysis were highly suggestive of doxorubicin cardiotoxicity.

BACKGROUND: Diastolic dysfunction (DD) is associated with the development of heart failure and contributes to the pathogenesis of other cardiac maladies, including atrial fibrillation. Inhibition of histone deacetylases (HDACs) has been shown to prevent DD by enhancing myofibril relaxation. Pacemaker cells of the upper portion of the digestive tract were studied by electromyography of various parts of the stomach and duodenum. Pacemaker cells of the stomach were located mainly at the interface between the lesser curvature and cardia and in the proximal part of the antrum and were characterized by high spontaneous slow-wave and spike activities. Antroduodenal coordination contributes to sequential motor activity of the stomach and duodenum. Pacemaker cells were characterized by a specific shape and a lesser number of myofibrils.

Acute myopathy occurred in a 49-year-old woman hospitalized in the intensive care unit for status asthmaticus. She was given high-dose intravenous steroid therapy and intubated. We describe two women with acquired partial lipodystrophy, one with significant myopathic symptoms and signs. Muscle biopsy of deltoid and quadriceps was performed in each case. The light microscopy findings were of type 1 and type 2 fibre hypertrophy, with an increase in intracytoplasmic fat in both cases. Electron microscopy showed normal fibres, with accumulations of electron-lucent fat droplets between the myofibrils. The cause of the lipodystrophies is uncertain, but myopathy may be a feature, and muscle biopsy studies may help in further defining the syndrome.
