AIM: Bad habits result in altered functions which with time can cause anomalies of the orofacial morphology. To solve these problems, orthodontic treatment can be supported by myofunctional therapy in order to recover the normal functionality of the oral muscles. The aim of this study is to assess the need to treat patients with neuromuscular disorders, from both the occlusion and the muscles condition approach in order to obtain the balance needed for the stability of treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A sample of 23 patients with atypical swallowing was included in this study, some of them p

Ankyloglossia or tongue-tie is a condition present since birth that results in restricted movement of the tongue due to the attachment of the lingual frenulum. The condition affects breastfeeding, speaking, swallowing, occlusion, and proper tongue posture. Tongue ties vary in degree of severity from mild cases of mucus membrane bands to complete tongue ties where the tongue adheres to the floor of the mouth. Treatment options such as speech therapy, frenotomy, frenectomyhave all been suggested in the literature. Surgical correction often causes, bleeding, chances of infection, swelling, and rela

Myotherapy intervention in facial aesthetics aims to attenuate wrinkles and signs of facial aging. The relationship between accentuated muscle contraction during chewing, swallowing and speaking and the appearance of facial wrinkles has been suggested by speech-language pathology literature. This study aimed to report the effect of electromyographic biofeedback associated with training of chewing, swallowing, and smiling patterns, during speech therapy intervention aimed at reducing the signs of facial wrinkles and furrows, in a 55-year-old woman. The therapy also included isotonic and isometr

BACKGROUND: Thumb sucking, the use of pacifier and mouth breathing in the early childhood may negatively influence the development of the maxillary arch. Myofunctional therapy has become a non-invasive intervention that can fulfil the dysfunction of the orofacial muscles, although the studies on its effectiveness in preventing arch underdevelopment are limited.
METHODS: The sample size (n = 64) was divided into two groups: the intervention group (n = 32) where the children were subjected to 12 months of structured myofunctional training and habit cessation counselling, and the control group (

There is no standardized protocol for the clinical evaluation of orofacial components and functions in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The aim of this study was to examine the validity, reliability, and psychometric properties of the Expanded Protocol of Orofacial Myofunctional Evaluation with Scores (OMES-expanded) in subjects with obstructive sleep apnea. Patients with obstructive sleep apnea and control subjects were evaluated, and the validity of OMES-expanded was tested by construct validity (i.e. the ability to discriminate orofacial status between apneic and control subjects) and

The use of tools and other objects in articulation therapy has been bundled into new groups of activities called "nonspeech oral motor exercises" (NSOME) and 'nonspeech oral motor treatments' (NSOMT) by some authors. The purveyors of these new terms suggest that there is no proof that such objects aid speech learning, and they have cautioned students and professionals about their use. Speech-language pathologists are trying to reconcile these cautions with basic Van Riper type therapy routines. The purpose of this literature review was to summarize the ways in which tools/objects were used by

AIM: Over the years, the role of the lingual frenulum in the development of skeletal structures has been evaluated. However, the effect of short lingual frenulum treatment on bone structures is unclear. We need to investigate the effect of surgery and myofunctional therapy on maxillary development. This could be the rationale to establish an orthodontic interception protocol.
METHODS: The case-control study was carried out in the Operative Unit of Pedodontics of the University Dental Clinic, at the Department of Medical, Oral and Biotechnological Sciences of the University of "G. D'Annunzio"

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a clinical disorder within the spectrum of sleep-related breathing disorders (SRDB) which is used to describe abnormal breathing during sleep resulting in gas exchange abnormalities and/or sleep disruption. OSA is a highly prevalent disorder with associated sequelae across multiple physical domains, overlapping with other chronic diseases, affecting development in children as well as increased health care utilization. More precise and personalized approaches are required to treat the complex constellation of symptoms with its associated comorbidities since not

Interdisciplinary, patient-specific cooperation between orthodontics and speech therapy plays an important role in the therapy of myofunctional dysfunctions. The following orthodontic-logopedic screening procedure is intended to objectify the diagnosis of such dysfunctions and the progress of therapy. A diagnostic questionnaire was prepared based on existing diagnostic questionnaires for myofunctional dysfunction. It contains 32 questions, with a clinical weighting of 0 to 50 points in total. This results in a point score. The lower the score is, the lower the need for therapy is. The study in

AIM: Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) affect oral functions and influence craniofacial development, contributing to skeletal and dental malocclusions. The collaboration between orthodontists and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) is crucial for early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic competence of orthodontic residents in identifying OMDs, and to determine whether the application of a standardised interdisciplinary orofacial assessment protocol enhances diagnostic accuracy and interprofessional consistency.
METHODS: Twenty-nine postgrad

Limited mouth opening (LMO) is a common complication of the transtemporal craniotomy that is often involved in the temporalis and temporomandibular joint. The occurrence of prolonged LMO was rare. Risk factors for such limitation after these neurosurgical procedures are defined, and the strategies of treatment and prevention are further discussed. This article presents 12 patients with severe LMO after transtemporal neurosurgical procedures. Four patients received myofunctional training combined with the neuromuscular blocking in the temporalis, which methods may be more effective for LMO withi

BACKGROUND: Botulism is a severe neuroparalytic, of an acute characteristic, afebrile and is caused by the action of a toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. This toxin links itself to the receptors of the axon membrane of the motor neurons, preventing the release of acetylcholine in the neuromuscular junction, causing flaccid paralysis of the cranial nerves and skeleton musculature.
AIM: To present the speech therapy procedures adopted with a patient with botulism and who was presenting dysphagia.
METHOD: A male adult, with botulism, sent for a speech-language evaluation due to the presen
