Glycosphingolipids--nature, function, and pharmacological modulation.

The discovery of the glycosphingolipids is generally attributed to Johan L. W. Thudichum, who in 1884 published on the chemical composition of the brain. In his studies he isolated several compounds from ethanolic brain extracts which he coined cerebrosides. He subjected one of these, phrenosin (now known as galactosylceramide), to acid hydrolysis, and this produced three distinct components. One he identified as a fatty acid and another proved to be an isomer of D-glucose, which is now known as D-galactose. The third component, with an "alkaloidal nature", presented "many enigmas" to Thudichu

Diagnosing moral disorder: the discovery and evolution of fetal alcohol syndrome.

The diagnosis of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) was invented in 1973. This paper investigates the process by which a cluster of birth defects … and the medical literature on FAS is infused with moral rhetoric, including passages from classical mythology, philosophy, and the Bible. FAS is a moral as well as a medical diagnosis, reflecting the broader cultural concerns of the era in which it was discovered, including a greater awareness of environmental threats to health, the development of fetal med …

AAA+ protein unfoldases-the Moirai of the proteome.

AAA+ ATPases safeguard proteostasis by harnessing ATP hydrolysis to unfold misfolded or damaged proteins. Depending on their specific structural motifs and partners, they either channel substrates to peptidases for degradation or disentangle aggregates for refolding. This conserved mechanism across all life domains relies on the conversion of chemical energy into mechanical force. Although structural, biochemical and single-molecule studies have provided valuable insights into ATP-driven unfolding, the precise threading mechanism remains unresolved. This review synthesises current knowledge on

Skeletal dysplasias in art and antiquities: A cultural journey through genes, environment, and chance.

People with skeletal dysplasias have left traces in art and antiquities through ages and cultures worldwide, in Ancient Egypt, Classical Greece, Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Europe. Such traces record the impact of people with skeletal dysplasia on society and culture-in daily life, religion, and mythology. However, identifying ("diagnosing") skeletal dysplasia in artifacts and interpreting what such depictions meant within the culture in which they were created is extremely challenging and at times impossible. The objectives of this short and necessarily selective survey are to present a few…

"Cerberus" T Cells: A Glucocorticoid-Resistant, Multi-Pathogen Specific T Cell Product to Fight Infections in Severely Immunocompromised Patients.

Adoptive immunotherapy (AI) with pathogen-specific T cells is a promising alternative to pharmacotherapy for the treatment of opportunistic … The product, "Cerberus" T cells (Cb-STs), was called after the monstrous three-headed dog of Greek mythology, due to its triple potential; specificity against viruses, specificity against fungi and resistance to glucocorticoids. Following efficient on-target GR disruption and minimal off-target editing, the generated Cb-STs maintained the characteristics o …

Sexism and Feminist Conspiracy Beliefs: Hostile Sexism Moderates the Link Between Feminist Conspiracy Beliefs and Rape Myth Acceptance.

This research examined the effect of belief in feminist conspiracy theories and sexist ideology on endorsing rape myths. Study 1 (N = 201) uncovered that the relationship between feminist conspiracy beliefs and rape myth acceptance was conditional on higher levels of hostile sexism. Study 2 (N = 552) demonstrated that for those with higher hostile sexism, exposure to feminist conspiracy theories (vs. control) increased feminist conspiracy beliefs, which were then associated with rape myths. The current research suggests that the link between feminist conspiracy beliefs and rape myths could res

[The death of Cleopatra].

The image of a queen bitten by a snake is controversial and the facts, such as the swiftness of her death and her servants, and scientific experiments are in favour of a deadly poisoning. The author reminds that in the ancient texts the snake had sacred virtues and it was a symbolic image to embellish the suicide of the one who was sentenced to death by the Romans. Octaves set up the myth of a fatal bite which became an iconographic image for the cinema.

Different types of alcoholic beverages such as wine and beer were used in ancient times for various medicinal purposes. Being the oldest and … vine, these beverages were the long sought elixirs of life and appeared in religious ceremonies, in mythology, and in social meals, such as the Greek symposia. In addition, these alcoholic drinks were considered to be a remedy for practically every disease and, therefore, were a common ingredient in ancient prescriptions. They were used as anaesthetics that …

A historical inquiry into the appropriateness of the term "panic disorder".

Panic disorder was introduced in the standard psychiatric nosology with the publication of the DSM-III in 1980. The myriad of earlier medical and psychiatric names describing anxiety attacks and related conditions were all abandoned, being housed under the term "panic attack and panic disorder". In this paper, the rationale and the appropriateness of this term are critically examined from a historical perspective. First, a brief historical account of anxiety that comes in the episodic form, and the medical and psychiatric terminology that emerged during the last two centuries regarding this co

The dirty dozen: 12 myths that undermine tobacco control.

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. The health risks of smoking are well documented, as is the effectiveness of clinical and public health interventions to prevent and reduce smoking. However, many myths about smoking either encourage people to begin or continue smoking or deter them from quitting. Some myths stem from a misapplied understanding of what might seem to be common sense; others are deliberately promulgated by the tobacco industry to induce people--especially children--to start smoking and to keep them smoking as adults. These myths und

Myths surrounding the use of urinary catheters: a summary of key beliefs that inhibit acute care nurses from altering their use of urinary catheters.

Nurses frequently base their use and care of indwelling urinary catheters on long held beliefs that contemporary research is disproving. As an excellent place of attachment, the catheter permits rapid migration of organisms into the bladder, independent of the position of the catheter bag. For treatment of bladder distension, intermittent catheterization is preferable to leaving an indwelling catheter in place. Regardless of the amount of urine obtained, intermittent catheters are usually not intended to remain in the bladder. Irrigation of a bypassing urinary catheter forces organisms into th

Leonardo Da Vinci, the genius and the monsters. Casual encounters?

This article analyses Leonardo's interest in monsters and deformed reality, one of the lesser known aspects of his vast and multifaceted output. With the possible exception of his studies of physiognomy, relevant drawings, sketches and short stories represent a marginal aspect of his work, but they are nevertheless significant for historians of teratology. The purpose of this study is to provide a broad overview of the relationship between Leonardo and both the literature on mythological monsters and the reports on monstrous births that he either read about or witnessed personally. While aspec
