The Use of Diatomite as a Catalyst Carrier for the Synthesis of Carbon Nanotubes.

In this article, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been synthesized on the surface of a diatomite mineral impregnated with transition metal salts using a propane-butane mixture in a chemical vapor deposition reactor at atmospheric pressure. The catalyst concentration and synthesis temperature have been varied in order to understand their effects on the formation of MWCNTs and their morphology. Diatomite was chosen as a catalyst carrier due to its elemental composition. It is mainly composed of amorphous silica, quartz and also contains such metals as Fe, K, Ca, Mn, Cr, Ti, and Zn, whi…

Advances and Perspectives in the Use of Carbon Nanotubes in Vaccine Development.

Advances in nanobiotechnology have allowed the utilization of nanotechnology through nanovaccines. Nanovaccines are powerful tools for enhancing the immunogenicity of a specific antigen and exhibit advantages over other adjuvant approaches, with features such as expanded stability, prolonged release, decreased immunotoxicity, and immunogenic selectivity. We introduce recent advances in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to induce either a carrier effect as a nanoplatform or an immunostimulatory effect. Several studies of CNT-based nanovaccines revealed that due to the ability of CNTs to carry immunogenic…

Carbon nanotube incorporation in PMMA to prevent microbial adhesion.

Although PMMA-based biomaterials are widely used in clinics, a major hurdle, namely, their poor antimicrobial (i.e., adhesion) properties, remains and can accelerate infections. In this study, carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were incorporated into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to achieve drug-free antimicrobial adhesion properties. After characterizing the mechanical/surface properties, the anti-adhesive effects against 3 different oral microbial species (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida albicans) were determined for roughened and highly polished sur…

Carbon Nanotube Based Groundwater Remediation: The Case of Trichloroethylene.

Adsorption of chlorinated organic contaminants (COCs) on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been gaining ground as a remedial platform for groundwater treatment. Applications depend on our mechanistic understanding of COC adsorption on CNTs. This paper lays out the nature of competing interactions at play in hybrid, membrane, and pure CNT based systems and presents results with the perspective of existing gaps in design strategies. First, current remediation approaches to trichloroethylene (TCE), the most ubiquitous of the COCs, is presented along with examination of forces contributing to adsorption…

Tin oxide-carbon nanotube composite for NOx sensing.

Tin oxide-single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) nano composites are synthesized for gas sensor application. The fabrication includes deposition of porous SWCNTs on thermally oxidized SiO2 substrates followed by rheotaxial growth of Sn and thermal oxidation at 300, 400, 500, and 600 degrees C in air. The effects of oxidation temperature on morphology, microstructure, and gas sensing properties are investigated for process optimization. The tin monoxide oxidized at 400 degrees C showed the highest response at the operating temperature of 200 degrees C. Under the optimized test condition, the compo

Polyaniline-carbon nanotube composite film for cholesterol biosensor.

Nanocomposite film composed of polyaniline (PANI) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), prepared electrophoretically onto indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass plate, was used for covalent immobilization of cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) via N-ethyl-N'-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) chemistry. Results of linear sweep voltammetric measurements reveal that ChOx/PANI-MWCNT/ITO bioelectrode can detect cholesterol in the range of 1.29 to 12.93 mM with high sensitivity of 6800 nA mM(-1) and a fast response time of 10 s. Photometric studies for ChOx/PANI-MWCNT…

The degree and kind of agglomeration affect carbon nanotube cytotoxicity.

The urgent need for toxicological studies on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has arisen from the rapidly emerging applications of CNTs well beyond material science and engineering. In order to provide a basis for comparison to existing epidemiological data, we have investigated CNTs at various degrees of agglomeration using an in vitro cytotoxicity study with human MSTO-211H cells. Non-cytotoxic polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate was found to well-disperse CNT. In the present study, the cytotoxic effects of well-dispersed CNT were compared with that of conventionally purified rope-like agglomerated C…

Carbon nanotubes as the supporting film for cryo-EM specimen preparation.

Specimen preparation is a critical and rate-limiting step in cryo-EM structural analysis, primarily due to challenges posed by the air-water interface. In this study, we introduce carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a one-dimensional fibrous support material to address this issue. CNTs interact with macromolecules, effectively protecting them from air-water interfaces, and macromolecules arrange themselves around CNTs in various orientations. Furthermore, CNTs biofunctionalized with affinity tags exhibit strong specificity in binding target macromolecules, facilitating direct purification of targets fr…

Optical pulling force in carbon nanotubes: Manifestation of non-local conductivity.

We develop a new theory of an optical force exerted on a carbon nanotube (CNT) with a non-local conductivity. To determine the optical force, we employ an integral-equation-based approach in terms of the current density. The analysis is constructed for a finite-length cylindrical CNT by rigorously accounting for edge effects. In addition to numerical solutions of the integral equation, we obtain an approximate analytical expression for the optical force acting on the CNT, which shows good agreement with numerical simulations. We also demonstrate the existence of some frequency ranges in which

Confined growth of armchair MoS2 nanotubes at the 1-nm limit.

Atomically thin nanotubes of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides offer a platform for exploring quantum phenomena at the one-dimensional limit and for realizing nanoscale transistor channels. However, conventional syntheses produce only large-diameter (>10 nm), multiwalled tubes with uncontrolled chiralities. We report the synthesis of single-walled molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanotubes with diameters approaching 1 nm, achieved through spatially confined reactions inside boron nitride (BN) nanotubes. The confined geometry stabilizes otherwise inaccessible, highly strained MoS2 nano…

Confinement-modulated phase transition of Fe-Ni melts in carbon nanotubes.

Fe-Ni nanowires exhibit excellent magnetic properties, making them promising candidates for spintronic and high-density storage applications. Under carbon nanotube (CNT) confinement, their structural evolution and phase behavior remain insufficiently understood. Here, we systematically investigate the solidification and structural evolution of Fe-Ni melts confined within CNTs. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that nanoconfinement suppresses crystallization and induces amorphous solidification, leading to the formation of coaxial layered nanowires governed by the evolution of common neighb

Microwave Synthesis of CuNi/TiO2 Nanotubes for Enhanced Photocatalytic H2 Generation.

Microwave-assisted synthesis offers several advantages over conventional methods, including shorter reaction times and more efficient heating in systems containing polar solvents such as water or ethanol. These features can be exploited to prepare and modify active photocatalysts for H2-production reactions, allowing precise tuning of composition and final properties of the solids and boosting their performance. In this work, the modification of TiO2 nanotube arrays with Cu and Ni was explored using a microwave-assisted methodology. The modified materials displayed an H2 production rate of 1.4

Direct Amidation of Alkynes with Nitroarenes via Heterogeneous Semiconductor TiO₂ Nanotubes.

Amides, which are crucial in pharmaceuticals and materials science, are traditionally synthesized via unsustainable condensation reactions. While direct amidation has long been pursued as an atom-economical route, it still relies on toxic reagents and harsh conditions. This work presents a light-driven photocatalytic process that explores a rarely investigated transformation of alkynes and nitroarenes, enabling amide synthesis with excellent yields (up to 95%) using heterogeneous TiO₂ nanotubes. This sustainable approach enables C-N bond formation with a wide range of alkynes and diverse nitro…

Antibacterial Electrophoretically Loaded Titania Nanotubes on Titanium Alloy Implants Enhance Osseointegration.

Primary hip and knee arthroplasties are common surgeries in the U.S., with periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) being the leading cause of implant revision. Systemic antibiotics often fail to achieve sufficient local concentrations, driving interest in localized drug delivery. Titanium (Ti) implants modified with titania nanotubes (TNTs) provide an increased surface area for drug loading and controlled release. Previous studies have shown that gentamicin-loaded TNTs inhibit Staphylococcus aureus growth in vitro without compromising osteoblast viability. This study investigated the effect of ge…

Unidirectional hyperbolic whispering-gallery phonon-polariton excitation in boron nitride nanotubes.

In two-dimensional (2D) hyperbolic materials, energy is directed into their deep subwavelength polaritonic modes through four narrow beams. Hyperbolic whispering-gallery mode nanocavity-confined phonon polaritons (PhPs) display a strongly enhanced light-matter interaction in the infrared regime. Particularly, the unidirectional phonon-polarization excitation in nanocavities has a potential application value in an on-chip integrated optical circuit design, efficient optical sensors, and enhanced spectral technology. Here, we explore the hyperbolic whispering-gallery mode PhPs on the cross secti

Tunneling Nanotubes in Myeloid Cells: Perspectives for Health and Infectious Diseases.

Tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) are cellular connections, which represent a novel route for cell-to-cell communication. Strong evidence points to a role for TNTs in the intercellular transfer of signals, molecules, organelles, and pathogens, involving them in many cellular functions. In myeloid cells (e.g., monocytes/macrophages, dendritic cells, and osteoclasts), intercellular communication via TNT contributes to their differentiation and immune functions, by favoring material and pathogen transfer, as well as cell fusion. This chapter addresses the complexity of the definition and characterizatio…

Electrostatic stabilization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes dispersed in nonaqueous media.

Dispersing carbon nanotubes is an easy and low-cost way to manipulate these solids and allows the preparation of more complex materials or devices, so it is fundamental for further uses that these dispersions have controlled properties and high colloidal stability. In this work we report the spontaneous electrical charge build-up in pristine multi-walled carbon nanotubes dispersed in common organic solvents such as chloroform and tetrahydrofuran and the achievement of dispersions stable for long periods without adding passivant agents or functional groups on nanotubes surface. Results from ele…

Direct Measurement of Mass Transport in Actuation of Conducting Polymers Nanotubes.

Nanostructured Conducting polymer (CP) actuators are promising materials for biomedical applications such as drug release systems. However, understanding the actuation behavior at the nano-scale has not yet been explored. In this work, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and poly(pyrrole) (PPy) nanotubes doped with a large counter ion (i.e. poly(styrene sodium sulfonate) (PSS)) were fabricated using electrochemical deposition of PEDOT and PPy around poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) nanofiber templates, followed by template removal in chloroform.
