BACKGROUND: Oral lichen planus (OLP) lesions have an overall malignant transformation rate of 1.37%. In patients with chronic disease, the diagnosis of malignancy relies on histopathological examination guided by clinical suspicion. Narrow-band imaging (NBI) is a promising endoscopic technique which, using a filtered light with specific wavelengths, can highlight microvascular abnormalities associated with subclinical neoplastic changes of the upper aerodigestive tract epithelium.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyse the value of NBI in selecting patients for biopsy before the emergence of

INTRODUCTION: Treatment planning in T2, T3 laryngeal carcinoma is based on clinical assessment and radiological imaging. However, to delineate precise mucosal margins for transoral laser microsurgery (TLM), a high class, sophisticated endoscopy is indispensable. Narrowband imaging (NBI) which is an optical filter technology, seems to be a useful adjunctive tool in marking superficial margins.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 98 patients diagnosed with HNSCC underwent cordectomies and were enrolled in the evaluation. T2 and T3 stage cancer were diagnosed in 90 and 8 patients, respectively. In

BACKGROUND AND AIM: In Japan, an increase in the number of routine esophagogastroduodenoscopy procedures is expected because several studies have reported that endoscopy screening has reduced gastric cancer mortality. Magnifying narrow-band imaging has been reported to be effective for accurate diagnosis of gastric abnormalities such as cancers, adenomas, and intestinal metaplasia. However, the efficacy of this method in routine esophagogastroduodenoscopy has not been clarified.
METHODS: We divided 3763 patients into two groups. The non-magnification group included 1842 patients who underwent

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: We previously reported that narrow-band imaging with magnifying endoscopy (NBI-ME) revealed a unique "gastritis-like" appearance in approximately 40 % of early gastric cancers after Helicobacter pylori eradication. Because rates of gastric cancer are increasing in patients with non-persistent infection of H. pylori, we aimed to clarify contribution factors to obscure tumors after therapeutic or spontaneous eradication.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: NBI-ME findings were examined retrospectively in 194 differentiated-type adenocarcinomas from H. pylori-negative patients with

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Controversy exists about which colonoscopic technique is most sensitive for the diagnosis of neoplasia in patients with ulcerative colitis. We compared new-generation narrow-band imaging (NBI) to high-definition endoscopy (HDE) for the detection of neoplasia and evaluated NBI for the differentiation of neoplastic from non-neoplastic mucosa.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Randomized crossover trial in which patients with ulcerative colitis underwent both NBI and HDE colonoscopy in random order with at least 3 weeks between the two procedures, which were performed by different

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether narrow-band imaging cystoscopy (NBIC) can identify bladder tumour suspected on follow-up white-light cystoscopy (WLC) after intravesical bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) therapy, as BCG causes an intense reaction in the bladder, appearing as red lesions on WLC, which might be residual tumour or BCG-induced inflammation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty-one patients with high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder tumours were evaluated 3 months after starting induction BCG therapy. All patients had abnormal

Narrow-band imaging (NBI) is a novel optical technique that uses narrow bandwidth filters in a video endoscope system to improve the diagnostic capability of endoscopes in characterizing tissues. It is well known that early identification of neoplasia in the gastrointestinal tract using this technique might make it possible to reduce the suffering of patients caused by loss of function or severe complications after radical surgery. Several reports have introduced this system as a preoperative examination to evaluate the lateral spread of the neoplastic lesions in the oropharynx or hypopharynx.

Schwannomas arising from the thoracic sympathetic trunk can cause Horner's syndrome, and surgical resection carries a risk of further nerve injury. We describe a technique for robotic nerve-sparing enucleation of a thoracic sympathetic trunk schwannoma presenting with Horner's syndrome. After exposure of the epineurium and perineurium, careful dissection of these neural sheath structures revealed a smooth tumor surface, along which enucleation was performed. Narrow-band imaging enhanced microvascular structures within the epineurium and perineurium and improved visual contrast with the relativ

Characterizing gas-liquid boundaries in underwater high-speed images is complicated by optical propagation and interface effects that broaden intensity transitions. Whether narrower transitions also indicate more accurate boundary localization, however, remains unclear. We integrated broadband white and narrow-band blue, green, and yellow source conditions with configuration-specific RBW processing at nominal observation distances of 0.7 and 5.0 m. Each source-distance condition was represented by one acquisition run, from which 20 temporally separated frames were analyzed as frame-level subsa

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Qualitative diagnosis of ulcerative colitis-associated neoplasia (UCAN) is crucial for surveillance colonoscopy in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). Although the utility of magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging (ME-NBI) in sporadic neoplasia diagnosis has been reported, its efficacy in UCAN remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of ME-NBI for qualitative diagnosis of UCAN.
METHODS: We generated 60 ME-NBI images (30 UCANs and 30 nonneoplasia lesions, including 10 polypoid and 20 nonpolypoid lesions) from patients with UC who underwent colo

RATIONALE: Endometrial vascular dystrophy is a rare and poorly understood pathological condition characterized by tortuous and dilated blood vessels visible under hysteroscopy. Diagnosing this condition is challenging due to its potential resemblance to more severe lesions, such as endometrial hyperplasia or carcinoma. Narrow-band imaging (NBI) technology enhances the visualization of superficial vascular structures, offering a new perspective for diagnosis. This study aims to explore the application value of NBI technology in identifying endometrial vascular abnormalities, thereby improving d
