Incomplete, intrasubstance strain injuries of the rectus femoris muscle.

Rectus femoris muscle strain injuries commonly occur at the distal muscle-tendon junction of the quadriceps tendon. However, we have recently recognized a pattern of strain injury that consists of an incomplete intrasubstance tear at the muscle-tendon junction formed by the deep tendon of the muscle's indirect head and those muscle fibers originating from this tendon. These injuries are found more proximally within the thigh than the "classic" distal rectus femoris muscle strain. We reviewed 10 athletes with these intrasubstance tears, all of whom had diagnostic imaging performed using compute

Inaccuracy of fine-needle biopsy in the diagnosis of solitary fibrous tumour of the liver.

Solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is an uncommon neoplasm of mesenchymal origin that primarily affects the pleura and mediastinum. SFTs may occur elsewhere in the body including the liver, peritoneum, orbit and other soft tissues. Recent advances in immunohistochemical analysis have allowed greater identification of SFTs. Nevertheless, radiologically it remains difficult to distinguish SFTs of the liver from other solitary tumours as they have many common features. We report a case of SFT of the liver and highlight the potential inaccuracy of percutaneous biopsy in the diagnosis of large solitary

Imaging of benign and malignant soft tissue masses of the foot.

The foot is a relatively uncommon site of neoplastic and non-neoplastic soft tissue tumors. Although it contains a relatively small amount of somatic soft tissue elements, the foot is considerably rich in tendons, fasciae, retinaculae, and synovium. Corresponding to this distribution of soft tissue elements, some soft tissue lesions, such as giant cell tumor of tendon sheath, fibromatosis, and synovial sarcoma, are commonly seen in this location. Vascular tumors represent common soft tissue masses of the foot as well. Magnetic resonance imaging is the modality of choice in the assessment of so

Fusion-driven cutaneous and superficial mesenchymal and adnexal tumors-A clinicopathologic and molecular study of 15 cases, including a novel case of ACTB::ZMIZ2-rearranged adnexal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: While the list of fusion-driven soft tissue neoplasms is expanding rapidly, their importance among cutaneous and superficial mesenchymal and adnexal neoplasms remains poorly understood. This challenge is especially evident in cases with ambiguous histopathology that are difficult to classify based on morphology. AIMS: Our goal was to investigate the benefits of next-generation sequencing in diagnosing complex cutaneous neoplasms. MATERIALS & METHODS: Departmental archives were searched for fusion-driven cutaneous neoplasms. Slides were retrieved and clinical information including

Intestinal LMNA::NTRK1-fused spindle cell neoplasm with S100 and CD34 coexpression: a new case.

Recurrent fusions involving neurotrophin tyrosine receptor kinase (NTRK) genes have been increasingly recognised in spindle cell tumours of somatic soft tissues due to the widespread use of RNA-based sequencing techniques. This heterogeneous group of neoplasms is included as an emerging entity in the current WHO Classification of Soft Tissue and Bone Tumors A subset of these tumours, associated with NTRK1 fusions, displays a distinctive phenotype in the form of monomorphic cytomorphology, patternless arrangement, perivascular and stromal hyalinisation, and CD34+/S100+/SOX10- immunoprofile. An Update on Selected Giant Cell-Rich Tumors of Soft Tissue.

Giant cell-rich tumors of soft tissue present a significant diagnostic challenge due to pronounced morphological overlap, particularly in limited tissue samples. This review provides a streamlined update on the clinicopathological and molecular features of nine distinct entities: nodular fasciitis, juvenile xanthogranuloma, phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor, tenosynovial giant cell tumor, giant cell fibroblastoma, giant cell-rich solitary fibrous tumor, giant cell tumor of soft tissue, keratin-positive giant cell-rich tumor, and undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma. While these neoplasms are unif

Differential diagnosis of T2 hypointense masses in musculoskeletal MRI.

Many soft tissue masses have an indeterminate appearance on MRI, often displaying varying degrees and extent of T2 hyperintensity. However, a subset of neoplasms and tumor-like lesions may exhibit prominent areas of T2 hypointensity relative to skeletal muscle. The hypointensity observed on T2-weighted MRI can be caused by a variety of substances, including evolving blood products, calcifications or other inorganic crystals, or fibrous tissue. Carefully evaluating the presence and pattern of T2 hypointensity in soft tissue masses and considering potential causes in their associated clinical co

Differences in collagen fibres in the capsule walls of parakeratinized and orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts.

Epithelial-mesenchymal interactions are thought to play an important role in the pathogenesis of odontogenic lesions. Keratocystic odontogenic tumour (KCOT) is a benign cystic neoplasm with a characteristic parakeratinized epithelial lining, which differs histologically and behaviourally from the so-called orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC). The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in collagen fibres within the fibrous tissue walls of KCOT and OOC. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue samples from 15 cases of KCOT and 15 cases of OOC were collected. Paraffin section

Liposclerosing Myxofibrous Tumor in a Patient with Prostate Cancer: A Case Report.

CASE: A 64-year-old man diagnosed with prostate cancer was incidentally found to have a lesion in his distal femur. Although initially concerning for metastatic prostate cancer, after biopsy by an orthopaedic oncology specialist, a diagnosis of liposclerosing myxofibrous tumor (LSMFT) was confirmed. The lesion was treated with curettage and demineralized bone matrix grafting with close follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: This case report illustrates that LSMFT is not confined to the proximal femur and highlights the differences in radiographic appearance between LSMFT and more common metastatic bone lesi

Calcifying fibrous tumor.

Calcifying fibrous tumor is a rare benign mesenchymal neoplasm. The etiology and pathogenesis of this tumor are uncertain. It has wide anatomical distribution. The tumor is most commonly found in the soft tissues of the extremities in younger individuals. However, in middle-aged patients, it tends to affect the visceral locations more commonly. In visceral location, it can mimic aggressive lesions clinically. The purpose of this report is to describe a case of calcifying fibrous tumor in a 71-year-old female with a history of breast carcinoma who was found to have an incidental small bowel mas

A Rare Case of Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Kidney.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT), originally described in the pleura, is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm characterized by a wide spectrum of clinical presentations and histopathological features. Over the years, SFTs have been reported in various anatomical locations, including soft tissues, visceral organs, and, uncommonly, the kidney. While SFTs primarily arise from the pleura, their occurrence in the kidney is an infrequent phenomenon, accounting for a minute fraction of all renal tumors. This case report presents a unique instance of a solitary fibrous tumor originating in the kidney, highlighting

Recurrent fibrous solitary tumor of the parotid gland with satellite location: imaging, clinical and histological findings of rare entity.

Fibrous Solitary Tumors are infrequent neoplasms originating from mesenchymal tissues, most commonly arising from the visceral pleura and frequently exhibiting a benign behavior. Extra-pleural localization is unusual and the site of origin of these tumors from the parenchyma of the parotid gland is considered extremely rare. We report the case of a 66-years old woman with non-painful slow-growing left latero-cervical mass, who underwent a gadolinium-enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging showing a mass originating from the deep lobe of the parotid gland extending into the retro-pharyngeal space.

Juvenile ossifying fibroma with aneurysamal bone cyst: a case report.

The fibro osseous lesions of the jaws represent a diverse group of entities that are characterized by replacement of normal bone by a fibrous connective tissue matrix, with in which varying amounts of osteoid, immature and mature bone and in some instances, cementum like material are deposited. Fibro osseous lesions of the jaws include developmental (hamartomatous) lesions, reactive or dysplastic processes and neoplasms. Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is a unique fibro osseous neoplasm. It has 2 histopathological variants (1) Trabecular juvenile ossifying fibroma (TrJOF) and (2) Psammomatoid

Curschmann's spirals in pleural and peritoneal fluids. Report of 12 cases.

A limited prospective study of 334 peritoneal and pleural fluids demonstrated Curschmann's spirals in 12 specimens, a prevalence of 1 in 28 cases. Nine of these 12 specimens were peritoneal washings, 2 specimens were pleural fluids, and 1 specimen was a peritoneal dialysis fluid. The fluids came from nine women and three men. Both pleural fluids were from men (one with a history of lung adenocarcinoma and one with probable collagen vascular disease). The peritoneal dialysis fluid was from a man with renal failure. Seven of the nine women with peritoneal washing specimens had gynecologic cancer

Immunohistochemistry of soft tissue tumours: a review.

The diagnosis and classification of soft tissue sarcomas can pose difficult problems for the histopathologist. Many sarcomas are too poorly differentiated to exhibit morphological features specific enough to define their histogenesis. Using the immunoperoxidase technique with commercially available antisera as a routine adjunct to other diagnostic aids, it is possible to arrive at more accurate diagnoses on which treatment protocols can be based. In addition a better understanding of mesenchymal neoplasms and their origins can be obtained by functional immunohistochemical studies.

Myopericytoma: a pleural-based spindle cell neoplasm off the beaten path.

Myopericytoma is a recently described hemangiopericytoma-like neoplasm with myoid differentiation. These tumors are typically located in the subcutaneous and soft tissues of the extremities. The authors report a rare pleural-based pulmonary myopericytoma in a 58-year-old woman. The lesion was grossly homogeneous and well circumscribed. Microscopically, it was composed of densely packed spindle cells organized as whorls and short interlacing fascicles with a concentric perivascular distribution. Immunohistochemical reactions were positive for vimentin, smooth muscle actin (SMA), muscle-specific

Doege-Potter syndrome: hypoglycemia associated with malignant solitary fibrous tumor.

We report a case of recurrent solitary fibrous tumor with associated hypoglycemia, the "Doege-Potter syndrome." These are rare tumors with a 12-13% rate of malignancy. The syndrome of hypoglycemia is seen in less than 5% of the cases, and the associated tumors are large with a high mitotic rate. The cause of hypoglycemia is related to insulin-like growth factors produced by these tumors. Resection in many cases is curable with resolution of the hypoglycemia. We discuss the different signs and symptoms and literature evidence of treatment options and follow-up.

Solitary fibrous tumor: an updated review.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a fibroblastic neoplasm characterized by a branching, thin-walled dilated staghorn-shaped (hemangiopericytoma-like) vasculature and a NAB2::STAT6 gene fusion. SFTs can occur in almost any anatomical location, including superficial and deep soft tissues, visceral organs, and bone. They most commonly occur in extrapleural locations, equally affect both sexes, and are typically present in adults. Although metastasis is rare, SFTs frequently show local recurrence. The diagnosis of SFTs is difficult because of their broad histological and morphological overlap with o

Cytologic and histological features of rare nonepithelial and nonlymphoid tumors of the thyroid.

Thyroid tumors can be classified into epithelial, nonepithelial, and nonprimary lesions. Nonepithelial thyroid tumors are rare. They can be of primary origin within the thyroid gland, arise secondary to contiguous growth from adjacent tissues, or represent metastatic disease. The incidence of nonepithelial tumors of the thyroid is only 1% to 2%, most of which are lymphomas; the remainder includes mesenchymal and histiocytic tumors. This review examines the cytohistological features of various nonepithelial and nonlymphoid tumors of the thyroid, including vascular lesions, neural tumors (includ
