Neurofibroma is a benign neoplasm derived from peripheral nerves whose etiology is still unclear. It may present as a solitary lesion or be associated with other diseases such as neurofibromatosis type I and II syndrome. This paper aims to report an extremely rare case of a solitary giant neurofibroma of the mental nerve whose etiology was related to a local trauma. A 14-year-old female patient presented an extensive left facial mass with a size of 7 × 5 × 4 cm, located between the teeth 33 and 37 in the mandible region. It has begun to grow 3 months after a local trauma. Imaging studies were

The present immunochemical study concerns the distribution of calcineurin (CaN), a Ca2+/calmodulin-regulated protein phosphatase, in the nervous and neuroendocrine systems of mammals, and discloses the CaN-immunostaining results of human neoplasms. CaN immunoreactivity (ir) was present throughout the nervous system with a marked regional variation in strength of the staining intensity. Light microscopic observations showed that CaN-ir was localized in neurons, but was not detected in non-neuronal cells including astrocytes. Ultrastructural study also revealed that CaN-ir was present only in ne

The infrequent exposure of pathologists to soft tissue spindle cell neoplasms coupled with overlapping histologic patterns can often make diagnosis challenging. We reviewed all nonodontogenic spindle cell neoplasms seen between 1982 and 2002 (86,162 total accessions). Diagnoses were reclassified according to current standards supplemented with immunohistochemistry. Of the 307 neoplasms reviewed (0.36% of total accessions), neural tumors were the most common benign entities, accounting for 21% of total cases. Kaposi's sarcoma was the most common malignancy, accounting for 67% of all cases. Diag

Schwannomas are predominantly benign nerve sheath neoplasms caused by Nf2 gene inactivation. Presently, treatment options are mainly limited to surgical tumor resection due to the lack of effective pharmacological drugs. Although the mechanistic understanding of Nf2 gene function has advanced, it has so far been primarily restricted to Schwann cell-intrinsic events. Extracellular cues determining Schwann cell behavior with regard to schwannoma development remain unknown. Here we show pro-tumourigenic microenvironmental effects on Schwann cells where an altered axonal microenvironment in cooper

Desmoid tumors of the head and neck, also known as aggressive fibromatoses, are rare. They are soft tissue neoplasms arising from musculoaponeurotic structures and characterized of locally aggressive infiltration and recurrences. Complete surgical excision of desmoid tumors is considered to be the only effective method of cure. It is likewise important to make a function-preserving surgery. In addition to the radicality this aspect should be a primary goal to minimize morbidity. MRI is the first choice in the preoperative evaluation of neck desmoids. We describe the successful treatment of des

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing sialometaplasia is a benign inflammatory lesion involving most frequently the minor salivary gland of the hard palate. Involvement of the parotid gland is rare, involvement of the parotid gland associated with facial palsy is exceptional.
CASE REPORT: A 56-year-old male patient with Marfan syndrome presented with swelling and inflammation of the left parotid gland associated with progressively complete facial nerve paralysis. CT scan and MRI showed a parotid collection with hyper signal of the nearest tissues associated with erosion of the styloid process. A malignan

The prognosis of the treatment of brain tumours depends on two main factors: biological nature and localisation of the neoplasm. Requirements of oncologic surgery can be met only partially if at all in neurological surgery of brain tumours. Resectability depends primarily on localisation of the neoplasms. The leading principle is preservation of fine neural structures, minimising morbidity from tissue resection with the goal of maximal tumour resection. As nervous structures and the target volume do not move in the intracranial space, large radiation doses unusual in traditional radiotherapy c

Neoplasms and tumorlike lesions that originate from chest wall tissues are uncommon compared with tumors in other parts of the body, and unfamiliarity with these disease entities can cause diagnostic difficulties for radiologists. Furthermore, the imaging features of many of these tumors are nonspecific, particularly those that are locally aggressive. However, a systematic approach based on patient age, clinical history, lesion location, and characteristic imaging findings often helps limit the differential diagnosis. Primary chest wall tumors can be classified as bone or soft-tissue tumors, w

BACKGROUND: Pleomorphic adenomas are benign salivary gland tumors, which predominantly affect the superficial lobe of the parotid gland. The "pleomorphic" nature of the tumor can be explained on the basis of its epithelial and connective tissue origin. The tumor has a female predilection between 30-50 years of age. Slowly progressing asymptomatic swelling is the usual presentation of the tumor. Surgical excision of the tumor mass forms the mainstay of treatment, with utmost care taken to preserve the facial nerve.
CASE DETAILS: This case report aims to throw light on an interesting case of pl

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) predisposes to a spectrum of peripheral nerve sheath tumors, ranging from benign plexiform neurofibromas (PN) to atypical neurofibromatous neoplasms of uncertain biological potential (ANNUBP) and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST). Tumorigenesis follows a multistep molecular cascade initiated by biallelic NF1 inactivation, followed by CDKN2A loss and disruption of the Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 (PRC2). These events guide chromatin remodeling, widespread epigenetic dysregulation, and activation of oncogenic pathways such as RAS/MAPK and PI3K/AKT.

BACKGROUND: Renal medullary carcinoma is a recently described, highly aggressive neoplasm that affects predominantly young African American males with a history of sickle cell trait. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of fine needle aspirate cytology (FNAC) findings of renal medullary carcinoma.
CASE: A 14-year-old, African American male with a history of sickle cell trait presented with the sudden onset of third cranial nerve palsy. Radiographic examination demonstrated possible tumor masses in the brain, thorax and left kidney. Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration wa

OBJECTIVE: To develop a minimally invasive surgical technique for the treatment of parapharyngeal space and infratemporal fossa skull base neoplasms using the technical and optical advantages of robotic surgical instrumentation.
DESIGN: A robotics skull base surgery program at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, was initiated in the fall of 2005. Six experimental procedures focusing on developing approaches to the parapharyngeal space and infratemporal fossa were performed on a total of 2 cadavers and 1 mongrel dog. Based on the preclinical work, transoral robotic surgery (TORS) was

Neurofibromatosis (NF) type I is a neuroectodermal and mesodermal dysplasia caused by a mutation of the neurofibromin tumor suppressor gene. Phenotypic features of NF1 vary, and patients develop benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors and malignant neoplasms, such as malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, malignant melanoma, and astrocytoma. Multiparametric whole-body MR imaging (WBMRI) plays a critical role in disease surveillance. Multiparametric MRI, typically used in prostate imaging, is a general term for a technique that includes multiple sequences, i.e. anatomic, diffusion, and Dixon-ba

Recent metal artifact reduction techniques in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have sparked a new aera in visualization of the peri-implant region and assessment of failing orthopaedic hardware. Modes of failure after total hip arthroplasty can be classified into four broad categories: osseous abnormalities, implant instability and dislocation, implant-associated synovitis, and soft tissue abnormalities. Although MRI is complementary to plain radiography and computed tomography to diagnose the first two categories, it is paramount to investigate the complications related to the synovium and so

Skull base osteomyelitis typically arises as a complication of otogenic or sinonasal infections in immunocompromised patients. A much rarer entity, atypical skull base osteomyelitis is not associated with an obvious infective source. Atypical and culture-negative skull base osteomyelitis is even rarer and hampers diagnosis, as its clinical presentation is remarkably similar to skull base neoplasms. We report a case of extensive skull base osteomyelitis with orbital apex syndrome and multiple lower cranial nerve palsies which initially masqueraded as possible advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Osteolipoma is a benign neoplasm originating from the mesenchymal fat tissue cells and characterized by the presence of bone formation. In the head and neck district osteolipoma has been described as parapharyngeal, nasopharinx, submandibular gland, eyelid, floor of the mouth, and skull base lesion. Only 1 case of osteolipoma was reported as a neoplasm of the parotid region. Considering the rarity of the osteolipoma, our purpose was to describe the first case of totally intraparotid gland localization of osteolipoma and summarize and review the actual literature concerning the presence of this

Soft tissue sarcomas are capable of causing diagnostic bewilderment for the surgical pathologist, because of their diversity of differentiation and overlapping histologic appearances. Immunohistochemical studies provide a means whereby this confusion can be resolved in many cases, and electron microscopy also may play a useful role in this process. This overview presents a summary of results of these 2 adjuvant modalities of pathologic analysis, as applied to the spectrum of malignant soft tissue neoplasms.

The parapharyngeal space (PPS) is a well-defined anatomic zone of loose connective tissue lying deep to the tonsil and lateral to the pharynx. Neoplasms arising within the PPS are rare. We retrospectively reviewed 24 PPS fine-needle aspirations (FNAs) performed at The Johns Hopkins Hospital over the past 16 years (1987-2002). Patients presented with neck pain, dysphagia, and/or intraoral swelling of varying duration. Radiographic imaging disclosed PPS masses, varying in size from 2.5 to 8 cm. The most common clinicoradiographic suspicion was a nerve sheath tumor. Six cases had FNA performed us

Malignant melanotic nerve sheath tumor (MMNST) represents a highly aggressive neoplasm arising both in peripheral and cranial nerves. It accounts for < 1% of all nerve sheath tumors, but the real incidence may not be well defined yet because of the evolution of its nomenclature. To date, it is considered a distinct tumor type, no longer as the pigmented variant of schwannoma, with a different clinical course and biological behavior. MMNSTs exhibit a specific genetic hallmark related to the PRKAR1A gene, which explains the major incidence in Carney Complex-affected patients. One of the more fre

Therapeutic radiation to the posterior segment of the eye is a common option for posterior segment tumors. Such tumors are often malignant, but sometimes, benign neoplasms are treated with ionizing radiation. Also, non-neoplastic intraocular lesions like wet age-related macular degeneration may be treated with radiotherapy. Orbital disease, both neoplastic lesions like optic nerve sheath meningioma and non-neoplastic entities like Graves' ophthalmopathy may be treated with radiotherapy and this may include radiation of the optic nerve and posterior segment of the eye. Occasionally, radiotherap
