Robust and distributed neural representation of action values.

Studies in rats, monkeys, and humans have found action-value signals in multiple regions of the brain. These findings suggest that action-value signals encoded in these brain structures bias choices toward higher expected rewards. However, previous estimates of action-value signals might have been inflated by serial correlations in neural activity and also by activity related to other decision variables. Here, we applied several statistical tests based on permutation and surrogate data to analyze neural activity recorded from the striatum, frontal cortex, and hippocampus. The results show that

Distinct neural representations encode psychiatric states across multiple timescales.

Psychiatric states manifest over multiple timescales, from transient fluctuations in disorder-related distress to long-term variations in disease severity, yet whether these expressions share common neural representations remains unknown. We addressed this question in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) by comparing neural activity associated with momentary distress evoked by triggers versus that associated with clinically assessed chronic symptom severity. We analyzed more than 200 hours of intracranial recordings from the ventral capsule and orbitofrontal cortex throughout deep brain stimula

Anosmin-1 is essential for neural crest and cranial placodes formation in Xenopus.

During embryogenesis vertebrates develop a complex craniofacial skeleton associated with sensory organs. These structures are primarily derived from two embryonic cell populations the neural crest and cranial placodes, respectively. Neural crest cells and cranial placodes are specified through the integrated action of several families of signaling molecules, and the subsequent activation of a complex network of transcription factors. Here we describe the expression and function of Anosmin-1 (Anos1), an extracellular matrix protein, during neural crest and cranial placodes development in Xenopu

Comparison of the prediction of extremely low birth weight neonatal mortality by regression analysis and by neural networks.

AIMS: To compare the prediction of mortality in individual extremely low birth weight (ELBW) neonates by regression analysis and by artificial neural networks. STUDY DESIGN: A database of 23 variables on 810 ELBW neonates admitted to a tertiary care center was divided into training, validation, and test sets. Logistic regression and neural network models were developed on the training set, validated, and outcome (mortality) predicted on the test set. Stepwise regression identified significant variables in the full set. Regression models and neural networks were then tested using data sets wit

Pathogenesis of neural dysraphism in the mouse mutant vacuolated lens (vl).

The pathogenesis and expression of caudal neural dysraphism were studied by means of tritiated thymidine autoradiography in the mouse mutant vacuolated lens (vl) at 11-13 days of gestation. In homozygous litters, all of the embryos microscopically exhibited spinal cord defects, even though dysraphism could be detected grossly only in the most severely affected ones. The defects ranged from extreme eversion of widely open neural folds to a dorsally expanded neurocoel with an attenuated or distorted roof plate. Incorporation of tritiated thymidine occurred in cells in the defective roof plates,

Spectrum of neural-tube defects in 34 infants prenatally exposed to antiepileptic drugs.

We analyzed the spectrum of neural-tube defects associated with maternal exposure to antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and the possible contribution of familial and genetic factors to epilepsy or neural-tube defects. No specific association with maternal family history of neural-tube defects or epilepsy was seen. The ratio of spina bifida to anencephaly (33:1) suggested a specific association with caudal defects. Hydrocephaly was documented in at least 21 cases. Other midline defects, all associated with valproate (VPA), were hypospadias (two), hypertelorism (two), partial agenesis of corpus callosum

Maternal fever and neural tube defects.

It has been proposed that hyperthermia in the pregnant woman is associated with neural tube defects in her offspring. We analyzed retrospective interview data for a maternal history of probable febrile illness during the first trimester of pregnancy among mothers of infants with anencephaly or spina bifida. There were two control groups--mothers of infants with Down syndrome and mothers of infants with cleft lip or palate. With the Down syndrome group serving as controls, the incidence of febrile illness among mothers of all infants with neural tube defects was significantly elevated. With the

Expression of p53/HGF/c-met/STAT3 signal in fetuses with neural tube defects.

Neural tube defects (NTD) are morphogenetic alterations due to a defective closure of neural tube. Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF)/c-met system plays a role in morphogenesis of nervous system, lung, and kidney. HGF/c-met morphogenetic effects are mediated by signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT)3 and both HGF and c-met genes are regulated from p53. The aim of our study was to analyze mRNA and protein expressions of p53, HGF, c-met, and STAT3 in fetuses with NTD. By reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry, we analyzed neural tissues from four

The quantitative relationship between olfactory axons and mitral/tufted cells in developing Xenopus with partially deafferented olfactory bulbs.

Partial deafferentation of the olfactory bulb in Xenopus embryos was performed to analyze the effects of afferent innervation on the development of the central olfactory structure. In an attempt to analyze a possible early inductive role of the olfactory axons, one olfactory placode was removed before differentiation of the neural tube began (stages 26-31). A morphological and quantitative analysis was performed on larvae at the onset of metamorphic climax (stage 58). When the single olfactory nerve innervated one side of the rostral telencephalon, a single olfactory bulb developed on that sid

Predicting the Survival of Gastric Cancer Patients Using Artificial and Bayesian Neural Networks.

Introduction and purpose: In recent years the use of neural networks without any premises for investigation of prognosis in analyzing survival data has increased. Artificial neural networks (ANN) use small processors with a continuous network to solve problems inspired by the human brain. Bayesian neural networks (BNN) constitute a neural-based approach to modeling and non-linearization of complex issues using special algorithms and statistical methods. Gastric cancer incidence is the first and third ranking for men and women in Iran, respectively. The aim of the present study was to assess th

Neural network and "ganglion" formations in vitro: a video microscopy and scanning electron microscopy study on adult cultured spiral ganglion cells.

HYPOTHESIS: To analyze if adult-dissociated spiral ganglion cells may be propagated in vitro for later use in transplantation models to form integrated neural networks. BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is often associated with primary or secondary spiral ganglion cell degeneration. New strategies for cell repair and tissue engineering warrants further elucidation of the regenerative capacity of the auditory nerve. METHODS: We used in vitro/in video microscopy in combination with immunocytochemistry and field emission scanning electron microscopy to analyze neural development and network formation fr

Microparticle Shedding from Neural Progenitor Cells and Vascular Compartment Cells Is Increased in Ischemic Stroke.

PURPOSE: Ischemic stroke has shown to induce platelet and endothelial microparticle shedding, but whether stroke induces microparticle shedding from additional blood and vascular compartment cells is unclear. Neural precursor cells have been shown to replace dying neurons at sites of brain injury; however, if neural precursor cell activation is associated to microparticle shedding, and whether this activation is maintained at long term and associates to stroke type and severity remains unknown. We analyzed neural precursor cells and blood and vascular compartment cells microparticle shedding a

Precuneus activation correlates with the vividness of dynamic and static imagery: an fMRI study.

INTRODUCTION: Visual mental imagery (VMI) is a cognitive function that significantly impacts various aspects of daily life. However, the neural correlates of VMI vividness remain unclear, especially underlying different VMI types. Therefore, the current functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study aimed to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying static (SI) and dynamic VMI (DI), focusing on the role of precuneus especially in the imagery vividness. METHODS: The study involved 24 participants recruited from ShanghaiTech University. After excluding four participants due to excessive

Identification of putative exported/secreted proteins in prokaryotic proteomes.

The increasing number of bacterial genomes being sequenced fuels an equal demand for methods to rapidly analyze the proteomes of these organisms. One group of proteins of pressing importance is the exported/secreted proteins, given their dominant immunogenicity and role in pathogenesis. With this in mind, a weight matrix algorithm and two artificial neural networks, one based on amino acid position within the N-terminus and the other on amino acid frequency, were developed for identification of such proteins. The neural networks and a hybrid method, combining the weight matrix algorithm and th

Causal Interpretation of Neural Network Computations with Contribution Decomposition.

Understanding how neural networks transform inputs into outputs is crucial for interpreting and manipulating their behavior. Most existing approaches analyze internal representations by identifying hidden-layer activation patterns correlated with human-interpretable concepts. Here we take a direct approach to examine how hidden neurons act to drive network outputs. We introduce CODEC (Contribution Decomposition), a method that uses sparse autoencoders to decompose network behavior into sparse motifs of hidden-neuron contributions, revealing causal processes that cannot be determined by analyzi

Ethical and social aspects of neural prosthetics.

Neural prosthetics are devices or systems that bypass, modulate, supplement, or replace regions of the brain and its connections to the body that are damaged and dysfunctional from congenital abnormalities, brain and spinal cord injuries, limb loss, and neuropsychiatric disorders. Some prosthetics are implanted in the brain. Others consist of implants and systems outside the brain to which they are connected. Still others are completely external to the brain. But they all send inputs to and receive outputs from neural networks to modulate or improve connections between the brain and body. As a
