[Advantages and Disadvantages of Carotid Endarterectomy and Carotid Artery Stenting:Notes from a Hybrid Neurosurgeon].

OBJECTIVE: Carotid endarterectomy(CEA)is well-established and performed for carotid artery stenosis all over the world. However, some severe complications and pitfalls have been reported. Carotid artery stenting(CAS)in high-surgical-risk patients is considered an effective alternative to CEA. We reviewed our clinical experience of CEA and CAS and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For 13 years, we performed CEA for 133 patients(135 lesions)and CAS for 127 patients with carotid artery stenosis(129 lesions). CAS is indicated for the CEA high-risk

Aberrant formation and clinical picture of brachial plexus from the point of view of a neurosurgeon.

UNLABELLED: Variations detected during surgery stimulated us to study the variations of the formation of the brachial plexus. METHODS: We examined 110 brachial plexus in 55 adult cadavers in order to determine the incidence of neural variations. We observed the contribution of the C4 root and possibly Th2 root as well as various anomalies in the origination of each plexiform root and its branches from the spinal cord, and variations of the formation of the neural trunks, fascicles and peripheral branches. We examined their course, anastomosis, thickness and possible absence. We observed the p

Strategies to Reduce Gender Discrimination in Surgery: A Qualitative Study of Women Neurosurgeons and Cardiothoracic Surgeons.

OBJECTIVE: Despite growing numbers of women entering medicine, female neurosurgeons and cardiothoracic surgeons continue to report persistent gender discrimination in their workplaces. While previous efforts to address these disparities have focused on individual-level interventions, less attention has been directed toward the cultural and structural dynamics that sustain inequity within these high-intensity surgical environments. This study explores female surgeons' perspectives on how neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery might become more equitable and inclusive. DESIGN AND SETTING: This…

Subspecialty pediatric neurosurgery training: a skill-based training model for neurosurgeons in low-resourced health systems.

There is inadequate pediatric neurosurgical training to meet the growing burden of disease in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Subspecialty expertise in the management of hydrocephalus and spina bifida-two of the most common pediatric neurosurgical conditions-offers a high-yield opportunity to mitigate morbidity and avoid unnecessary death. The CURE Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida (CHSB) fellowship offers an intensive subspecialty training program designed to equip surgeons from LMIC with the state-of-the-art surgical skills and equipment to most effectively manage common neurosurgical
