The clinical and pathological features of 29 cellular blue nevi (CBN) and one malignant cellular blue nevus from our hospital files were reviewed. Although the sacrococcygeal region/buttock was the commonest single site, the majority of CBN occurred on the limb peripheries. Two-thirds of patients were under the age of 40 years. Follow-up of a mean of 7 years did not reveal any evidence of malignancy. Four histological subtypes were recognized: mixed biphasic, alveolar, fascicular or neuronevoid, and atypical varieties. One case developed a benign nodal metastasis. In one case, malignancy arose

BACKGROUND: Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a hereditary disease characterized by venous malformation on the skin and throughout the gastrointestinal tract, which is usually considered a benign disease without elevated risk of carcinogenesis. Nevertheless, lumen narrowing caused by hemangiomas may result in repeated mucosal damage from mechanical stimuli such as solid food. Therefore, it is important to recognize the potential of malignancy as a result of such chronic inflammation due to partial obstruction.

OBJECTIVES: Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare challenging cause of gastrointestinal bleeding. We performed a systematic review of case reports and case series on BRBNS to gather information on the treatment options currently available.
METHODS: All studies reporting a case of BRBNS in humans were evaluated. Papers were ruled out if CARE criteria and explanations on patient's selection, ascertainment, causality, and reporting were not respected or identified. PROSPERO 2021 CRD 42021286982.
RESULTS: Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome was treated in 106 cases from 76 reports. 57.5%

BACKGROUND: Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome is a rare clinical entity.
CASE CHARACTERISTICS: A 13-year-old Indian boy presented with characteristic cutaneous lesions, gastrointestinal malformations, skeletal involvement and pulmonary stenosis.
OBSERVATIONS: Diagnosis was confirmed on skin biopsy, radiographic evaluation, colonoscopy and echocardiography. Echocardiography revealed pulmonary stenosis, an association hitherto undescribed.
MESSAGE: Detailed evaluation in a patient of blue rubber bleb nerves syndrome is mandatory.

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare condition which is characterized by multiple venous malformations that may affect several organs. Gastrointestinal lesions, which mostly involve the small bowel and distal colon, may be responsible for gastrointestinal bleeding, causing more frequently chronic anemia. We report herein two cases of BRBNS causing gastrointestinal bleeding which were investigated by means of MR imaging. All venous malformations showed markedly high signal intensity on fat-suppressed T2-weighted MR images. In addition, extraintestinal venous malformations displayed

Blue nevus is an uncommon pigmented lesion of dermal melanocytes. By convention, two well defined histologic variants, designated as "common" and "cellular", have been recognised. In the last few years, these lesions have attracted much attention due to the recognition of news entities and to its confusion with malignant melanoma. In the present review, we point out the more striking features of new related entities (combined nevus, deep penetrating nevus, compound blue nevus) and establish the differential diagnosis with conflictive lesions such as atypical blue nevus, locally aggressive blue

Blue Rubber Bleb Nevus Syndrome (BRBNS) is an uncommon congenital disorder characterized by sporadic venous malformation which mainly occurs in skin and alimentary canal. Here, we report a BRBNS patient with concomitant intestinal intussusception who diagnosed by intraoperative endoscopy and ultimately managed using surgical resection. A 19-year-old boy was referred to urgent surgery for acute melena and stomachache. He had used to be a long-term iron user for undiagnosed chronic anemia and papules. Abdominal CT on admission demonstrated the presence of intestinal intussusception. The followin

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare vascular disorder characterized by multiple venous malformations (VMs) of the skin, gastrointestinal tract, and other organs. To date, several cases of sporadic BRBNS involving various parts of the pregnant woman's body have been reported; however, BRBNS in pregnancy with spinal epidural involvement has not been reported. Here, we describe the clinical features and management of familial BRBNS in pregnancy. The patient presented with multiple VMs on her head, neck, floor of the mouth, trunk, leg, foot, and vulva and spinal epidural lesions. The

Blue Rubber Bleb Nevus syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by distinctive cutaneous and gastrointestinal venous malformations that usually cause episodes of occult gastrointestinal haemorrhage and iron deficiency anaemia. We describe an 8-year-old girl who had multiple cutaneous venous malformations since birth. She also suffered from several episodes of severe chronic iron deficiency anaemia and required blood transfusions. To evaluate the presence of gastrointestinal bleeding secondary to intestinal angiomatosis, we decided to perform 99mTc-labelled red blood cell scintigraphy, which c

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare disorder characterized by discrete venous malformations of varying size and appearance that are present on the skin and within the gastrointestinal tract. The characteristic cutaneous lesions consist of deep-blue, soft, rubbery blebs, which are easily compressible. A serious complication is gastrointestinal bleeding. Because venous malformations were described historically as cavernous hemangiomas, the lesions of BRBNS were also inappropriately called hemangiomas in the literature. We describe 3 cases to delineate the venous malformations of BR

A ten year old boy had six cutaneous angiomas and recurrent rectal bleeding responsible for iron deficiency anemia. Histological examination established the diagnosis of blue rubber bleb naevus syndrome. Endoscopy, arteriography, computed tomography, and angioscintigraphy disclosed additional angiomas in the stomach and rectum and along the blood vessels in the lower limbs. The value of angioscintigraphy for identifying angiomas escaping detection by other means was illustrated in this case. Embolization of the inferior mesenteric artery was successful in preventing further rectal bleeding. Tr

Nevus of Ota is a variant of congenital nevus, which is morphologically paucicellular and resembles a common blue nevus. Although nevus of Ota is a risk factor for uveal melanoma in white people, the development of cutaneous melanoma within nevus of Ota is a very rare occurrence with only a few reported cases. We present a case of a long-standing nevus of Ota, with radiologic imaging demonstrating a large retro-orbital mass and a biopsy showing melanoma. The histopathology of the eye exenteration specimen illustrated various stages of melanocytic progression including areas resembling a nevus

Metastatic melanoma with unusual histopathology can be diagnostically challenging. One exceptionally rare cutaneous manifestation of metastases is blue-nevus-like metastatic melanoma (BNLMM). A 74-year-old male presented with a blue-gray lesion on his left helix in the same anatomical region of a previously resected lentigo maligna. Histopathological sections demonstrated an atypical biphasic proliferation of dendritic melanocytes with pigment incontinence and epidermal sparing, measuring > 0.05 mm in diameter. Although the majority of the cell population exhibited cytologic features consisten

OBJECTIVE: Clinical manifestations of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) and multifocal venous malformation (MVM) vary depending on the location of the lesions. The aim of this study was to assess the risk of developing CSF leaks in patients with epidural venous malformations (VMs).
METHODS: The authors retrospectively investigated the relationship between the development of a CSF leak and the presence of epidural VMs.
RESULTS: Nine patients (5 females) had epidural VMs and presentation that was confirmatory or suggestive of a CSF leak: 4 had BRBNS, 4 had MVMs, and 1 had a solitary VM.
