OBJECTIVES: The Newfoundland and Labrador diabetic ketoacidosis Project (NLdkaP) is a multi-intervention, province-wide project aimed at lowering rates of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) within the pediatric and young adult populations.
METHODS: The NLdkaP interventions were first selected, developed and implemented. We then conducted a retrospective study of hospitalization data over three 2-year periods: pre-, during and post-NLdkaP. Data included demographic factors, DKA hospitalizations and length of hospital stay.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence suggests that prehospital point of care ultrasound (POCUS) may change patient management. It serves as an aid in triage, physical examination, diagnosis, and patient disposition. The rate of adoption of POCUS among aeromedical services throughout Canada is unknown. The objective of this study was to describe current POCUS use among Canadian aeromedical services providers.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional observational study. A survey was emailed to directors of government-funded aeromedical services bases in Canada. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.

An assessment was made of the potential usefulness in a small rural hospital of the guidelines for prenatal risk assessment and management of the Newfoundland and Labrador Prenatal Record, a form similar to that in use in other provinces. Methylmercury (MeHg) is a central nervous system toxicant and exposures can adversely affect the health of marine mammals. A 9-year survey of neural tube defects in Newfoundland showed (1) evidence for secular variation, with a peak in 1980, but no general downward trend as seen in some other populations; (2) significant geographic variation which did not correlate with hardness or nitrate content of the lake water; (3) a tendency for the proportion of females among anencephalic births to increase with increasing frequency of anencephaly among geographic regions. This supports previous evidence for a female-specific contribution to the causes of increased liability to neural tube defect.

The increased risk of lung cancer from radon progeny among Newfoundland fluorspar miners is well established. In the present study, an internal cohort analysis was conducted to investigate whether radon progeny is also associated with increased mortality from other cancers. OBJECTIVES: Exposure to ionizing radiation may increase the risk of circulatory diseases, including heart disease. A limited number of cohort studies of underground miners have investigated these associations. We previously reported a positive but non-statistically significant association between radon progeny and heart disease in a cohort of Newfoundland fluorspar miners. Labrador, a previously unsurveyed area of Canada, has been sampled for human intestinal parasites. Four hundred and one asymptomatic volunteers between 1 and 72 years of age, including Inuit, Naskapi and whites, were examined during the summer of 1977. They harboured: Entamoeba coli, E. histolytica, E. hartmanni, Giardia lamblia and Diphyllobothrium sp. The infection rates are considerably lower than those found in other studies of Northern Canadian communities.

The effect of concurrent afebrile viral upper respiratory tract infection (URI) on measles and rubella serum antibody response after measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination was determined in 580 1-year-old children, 369 with URI and 211 without URI, with the use of preimmunization and postimmunization sera.
