We study ionic current fluctuations in solid-state nanopores over a wide frequency range and present a complete description of the noise characteristics. At low frequencies (f approximately < 100 Hz) we observe 1/f-type of noise. We analyze this low-frequency noise at different salt concentrations and find that the noise power remarkably scales linearly with the inverse number of charge carriers, in agreement with Hooge's relation. We find a Hooge parameter alpha = (1.1 +/- 0.1) x 10(-4). In the high-frequency regime (f approximately > 1 kHz), we can model the increase in current power spectra…

Unlike other physical ambient factors (i.e. electromagnetic fields or air pollutants), noise is perceived by a specific system (auditory system) in humans. It is therefore a phenomenon that is sensed and evaluated by everybody, and this is why exposure to noise is one of the most, if not the most, frequent complaints of populations living in large cities. In these areas and their surroundings, the sources of noise most frequently cited are traffic, followed by neighbourhood noises and aircraft noises. Sleep is a physiological state that needs its integrity to allow the living organism to recup…

Noise is defined as unwanted sound. Environmental noise consists of all the unwanted sounds in our communities except that which originates in the workplace. Environmental noise pollution, a form of air pollution, is a threat to health and well-being. It is more severe and widespread than ever before, and it will continue to increase in magnitude and severity because of population growth, urbanization, and the associated growth in the use of increasingly powerful, varied, and highly mobile sources of noise. It will also continue to grow because of sustained growth in highway, rail, and air tra…

Impulse noise causes evidently more severe hearing loss than steady state noise. The additional effect of occupational impulse noise on hearing has been shown to be from 5 to 12 dB at 4 kHz audiometric frequency. Reported cases for compensated for hearing loss are prevalent in occupations where noise is impulsive. For impulse noise two measurement methods have been proposed: the peak level method and energy evaluation method. The applicability of the peak level method is difficult as even the recurrent impulses have different time and frequency characteristics. Various national risk criteria d…

Pink (1/f) noise is one of the most common behaviours of biosystems. Our present paper is devoted to clarify the origin of this interesting phenomenon. It is shown that the stationary random stochastic processes under self-similar conditions (as we have in living objects) generate pink noise independently of the kind and number of variables.

Noise is a sound which is unwanted, either because of its effect on humans, its effect on fatigue or multifunctions of physical equipment, or its interference with the perception or detection of other sounds. It is a part of environmental pollution which can, in certain circumstances, reach worrying levels for the population (130 dB cause pain). Unsuitable exposure to noise for even short periods of time is responsible for symptomology involving the hearing organs (hypoacusis) and other parts of the body such as the cardiovascular, muscular and digestive systems via the connection between the …

Pupillometry has a long but inconclusive history as a means of measuring human alertness. Spontaneous pupillary oscillations in narcoleptics … ng narcoleptics and controls was reported. Random pupillary oscillations, which is called pupillary noise to distinguish these oscillations from spontaneous ones, were estimated from continuous pupil diameter recordings using a recursive least squares method applied to a subject-specific PLR system model. Pupillary noise sum of squares indicate that nar …

Four groups of binaural chinchillas were exposed to impact noise (B-duration = 200 ms) ranging from 119 dB to 137 dB peak equivalent SPL at repetition rates of 1/s or 4/s. The duration of exposure was adjusted so that each exposure consisted of equal acoustic energy. Animals were then sacrificed immediately, 24 h or 30 days after the exposure and their cochleas subjected to scanning electron microscopy. For exposures of 119 dB or greater, there appeared to be direct mechanical damage, including large clefts between the third row of outer hair cells and Deiters' cells and fracture of tight cell…

The development of hand-held auditory screening devices has led to increased hearing screening by physicians. Ambient noise levels were assessed in examination rooms of 20 physician offices. Measurements provided Ln, Leq, Lmax, and octave band data for specialty types: pediatrics, internal medicine, family practice and otolaryngology. Such data should not replace the need for individually monitoring potential screening sites.

The present investigation was performed to study coronary blood flow along with other indices of cardiac activity in subjects exposed to short-term noise. The study was carried out on 10 normal-hearing individuals suffering from Variant Angina of Prinzmetal. The acoustic stimuli consisted of 100 dB (A) broad-band noise, lasting 30 s. The following parameters were examined: ECG (D1, D2 and D3) and heart-rate by means of electrocardiographic recording, left ventricular systolic pressure (LVSP), left ventricular end diastolic pressure (LVEDP) and dP/dT max by means of arterial catheterization, an…

Diverse therapeutic agents, such as certain antibiotics, diuretics, and analgesics can cause functional and morphological damage to the inner ear. Noise present in recreational or occupational environment may also be potentially damaging to the auditory system when combined with some ototoxic therapeutic agents. This article documents recent research and controversies about the site and mechanism of action of major ototoxic drugs, noise-drug interaction, and possible prophylaxis against such ototoxicity.

In this paper, broad characteristics of industrial noise are recalled briefly. High levels and multiple sources require special rules for the measurement or risk, such as the location of microphones at the height of the worker's ear. Industrial noise is either continuous-, and in such case one measurement is enough to evaluate the amount of risk for the inner ear-or fluctuates with time. This is the reason why noise level meters which integrate noise levels along time, must be used in many industrial situations and risk expressed in equivalent level. The unit for industrial noise is the dB(A) …

Exposure to noise might be responsible for a wide and varied spectrum of physical and mental morbidity, although many of the claims of cause and effect relationship are controversial and unproven. The etiological relationship between noise and high frequency hearing loss is, however, well documented. While noise-induced hearing loss is considered to be primarily an occupational problem, current leisure time activities have created the potential for it to become more common in the community at large. Once developed, this hearing loss is permanent and cannot be influenced by therapy. Noise-induc…

The safety of long, continuous exposure to several different levels of noise was determined. Chinchillas were exposed for two or nine days to an octave band of noise with a center frequency of .5 kHz or 4 kHz. By examining the inner ear for evidence of acute cellular degeneration, exposures which produced minimal permanent damage could be identified easily. Differences were found between the two bands of noise in the level required to produce injury, and the type, location and extent of damage which occurred as the level was increased. The findings help explain why exposure to industrial noise…

This article sets out the issues involved in the consideration of noise-induced hearing damage. Exposure to noise can lead to a shift in the hearing threshold, resulting in loss of hearing. This shift may be either temporary or permanent. When it is permanent it is usually irreversible and not all persons can be helped by hearing aids. Permanent shifting of the hearing threshold may be caused by exposure to high sound levels. Ratios between lengths of exposure and frequency levels are given. The measurement of sound levels and assessment of acoustic hazards are presently related to non-fluctua…

Despite many studies of cochlear synaptic loss and/or recovery after acoustic injury, none has followed degeneration of auditory-nerve fiber (ANF) peripheral axons - a critical knowledge gap in the context of regenerative strategies. We exposed CBA/CaJ mice to a synaptopathic 8-16 kHz noise stimulus producing an immediate 50% loss of inner hair cell synapses, with minimal post-exposure recovery. Noise-exposed and unexposed animals were allowed to survive for 1 month, 6 months, 1 year or 2 years before tissue harvest. Using immunostaining and machine-learning pipelines, we quantified hair cells…

Sensory and perceptual processing are inherently shaped by both internal and external noise sources. While noise is typically seen as disruptive, it can, under certain conditions, enhance the detection of weak sensory signals-a phenomenon known as stochastic resonance (SR). Research on SR has primarily focused on dissimilar noise sources such as static visual noise or high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS), leaving it unclear whether different noise types produce similar enhancements or operate through shared mechanisms. Here, we investigated how three external noise so…
