Quantitative modeling of chronic myeloid leukemia: insights from radiobiology.

Mathematical models of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cell population dynamics are being developed to improve CML understanding and treatment. We review such models in light of relevant findings from radiobiology, emphasizing 3 points. First, the CML models almost all assert that the latency time, from CML initiation to diagnosis, is at most ∼10 years. Meanwhile, current radiobiologic estimates, based on Japanese atomic bomb survivor data, indicate a substantially higher maximum, suggesting longer-term relapses and extra resistance mutations. Second, different CML models assume different numbe

Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and radiation: findings among workers at five US nuclear facilities and a review of the recent literature.

The aetiology of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) is largely unknown. Despite compelling evidence for ionising radiation as a cause of most forms of leukaemia, CLL was not found to be radiogenic in early studies. Herein we describe the recent evidence for causation of CLL by ionising and non-ionising radiation, including a nested case-control study conducted within a cohort of 94 517 US workers at four nuclear weapons facilities and a nuclear naval shipyard. Forty-three cases of CLL deaths and 172 age-matched controls were identified with follow-up up to between 1990 and 1996. Radiation exp…

Risk Factors of Incidental Thyroid Abnormalities Identified on Low-Dose Chest CT Scans in Department of Energy Workers.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated risk factors of thyroid abnormalities detected on low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) among nuclear weapons workers in a lung cancer screening program. METHODS: We conducted a matched case-control study of participants with (647 cases) and without (1941 controls) incidental thyroid abnormalities on LDCT, matching on LDCT year and age between August 2006 and June 2023. Multivariable conditional logistic regression analysis adjusted for demographic, smoking, and occupational attributes yielded matched adjusted odds ratio (MAOR) with 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: Es…

Highly selective adsorption and lattice process of cesium by cubic cyanide-based functional materials.

Cesium (Cs) is a byproduct of nuclear bombs, nuclear weapons testing, and nuclear fission in nuclear reactors. Cs can enter the human body through food or air and cause lasting damage. Highly efficient and selective removal of 137Cs from low-level radioactive effluents (LLREs), which contain many radionuclides and dissolved heavy metal species, is imperative for minimizing LLRE volume, and facilitating their final disposal. Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) have received much attention as materials for the removal of radioactive Cs because of their affinity for adsorbing Cs+. In this study, an inex…

Role of Emerging Environmental Risk Factors in Thyroid Cancer: A Brief Review.

Environmental factors are recognized as risk factors of thyroid cancer in humans. Exposure to radiation, both from nuclear weapon or fallout or medical radiation, and to some organic and inorganic chemical toxicants represent a worldwide public health issue for their proven carcinogenicity. Halogenated compounds, such as organochlorines and pesticides, are able to disrupt thyroid function. Polychlorinated biphenyls and their metabolites and polybrominated diethyl ethers bind to thyroid, transport proteins, replace thyroxin, and disrupt thyroid function as phthalates and bisphenolates do, highl

Persistent distress after psychological exposure to the Nagasaki atomic bomb explosion.

BACKGROUND: Although there is speculation that individuals living in the vicinity of nuclear disasters have persistent mental health deterioration due to psychological stress, few attempts have been made to examine this issue. AIMS: To determine whether having been in the vicinity of the Nagasaki atomic bomb explosion in the absence of substantial exposure to radiation affected the mental health of local inhabitants more than half a century later. METHOD: Participants were randomly recruited from individuals who lived in the vicinity of the atomic bomb explosion in uncontaminated suburbs of

A review of radiation countermeasures focusing on injury-specific medicinals and regulatory approval status: part III. Countermeasures under early stages of development along with 'standard of care' medicinal and procedures not requiring regulatory approval for use.

PURPOSE: Terrorist attacks, with their intent to maximize psychological and economic damage as well as inflicting sickness and death on given targeted populations, are an ever-growing worldwide concern in government and public sectors as they become more frequent, violent, and sensational. If given the chance, it is likely that terrorists will use radiological or nuclear weapons. To thwart these sinister efforts, both physical and medical countermeasures against these weapons are currently being researched and developed so that they can be utilized by the first responders, military, and medica…

Glaucoma in atomic bomb survivors.

Radiation has been associated with increases in noncancerous diseases. An effect of low-dose radiation on the prevalence of clinically detected glaucoma has not been previously reported. We therefore investigated the prevalence of glaucoma in A-bomb survivors and its possible association with radiation dose. A total of 1,589 people who participated in the clinical examination program for A-bomb survivors at the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) between October 2006 and September 2008 and who had reconstructed radiation doses, were recruited into this cross-sectional screening study.

[Uranium exposure and cancer risk: a review of epidemiological studies].

OBJECTIVE: At the end of 2000, certain diseases including leukemia were reported among soldiers who participated in the Balkan and in the Gulf wars. Depleted uranium used during these conflicts was considered as a possible cause. Its radiotoxicity is close to that of natural uranium. This paper reviews the epidemiological knowledge of uranium, the means of exposure and the associated risk of cancer. METHODS: The only available epidemiological data concerns nuclear workers exposed to uranium. A review of the international literature is proposed by distinguishing between uranium miners and othe

Solid cancer incidence and low-dose-rate radiation exposures in the Techa River cohort: 1956 2002.

BACKGROUND: This is the first analysis of solid cancer incidence in the Techa River cohort, a general population of men and women of all ages who received chronic low-dose rate exposures from environmental radiation releases associated with the Soviet nuclear weapons programme. This cohort provides one of the few opportunities to evaluate long-term human health risks from low-dose radiation exposures. METHODS: Cancer incidence rates in this cohort were analysed using excess relative risk (ERR) models. The analyses make use of individualized dose estimates that take into account residence hist…

Animal Model Considerations for Medical Countermeasure Development for Radiation and Sulfur Mustard Exposures: Animal models for radiation and HD exposures.

Development of medical countermeasures (MCM) to mitigate and/ or treat the pulmonary complications associated with exposure to chemical, radiological, and/ or nuclear weapons is a national, public health preparedness posture priority in the United States (US). Pulmonary exposure to either sulfur mustard vapor or radiation causes oxidative damage, vascular injury, hyperinflammation, and pro-fibrotic signaling cascades that lead to life-threatening and potentially debilitating lung disease. There is no MCM currently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to mitigate and/ or treat …

Release, deposition and elimination of radiocesium ((137)Cs) in the terrestrial environment.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Radionuclide contamination in terrestrial ecosystems has reached a dangerous level. The major artificial radionuclide present in the environment is (137)Cs, which is released as a result of weapon production related to atomic projects, accidental explosions of nuclear power plants and other sources, such as reactors, evaporation ponds, liquid storage tanks, and burial grounds. The release of potentially hazardous radionuclides (radiocesium) in recent years has provided the opportunity to conduct multidisciplinary studies on their fate and transport. Radiocesium's high fission yield and ease of

Autoimmunity and chronic inflammation - two clearance-related steps in the etiopathogenesis of SLE.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with very prominent chronic inflammatory aspects that render into multiple symptoms and clinical signs. The precise etiology of SLE remains elusive; however, it is known that its etiopathogenesis is of multifactorial nature. The production of autoantibodies (AAb) targeting double stranded DNA (dsDNA) and other nuclear autoantigens is the main characteristic of this disease. These target antigens are often modified and/or translocated when apoptotic cells undergo secondary necrosis as a consequence of the clearance deficiency in patien

Effect of radiation on age at menopause among atomic bomb survivors.

Exposure to ionizing radiation has been thought to induce ovarian failure and premature menopause. Proximally exposed female atomic bomb survivors were reported to experience menopause immediately after the exposure more often than those who were distally exposed. However, it remains unclear whether such effects were caused by physical injury and psychological trauma or by direct effects of radiation on the ovaries. The objective of this study was to see if there are any late health effects associated with the exposure to atomic bomb radiation in terms of age at menopause in a cohort of 21,259

Economic impact profiling of CBRN events: focusing on biological incidents.

Chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) incidents, both caused accidentally by human error or natural/technological events and determined intentionally as criminal/malicious/terroristic acts, have consequences that could be differently characterized. In the last years many efforts to analyze the economic impact of terrorist threat have been carried out, while researches specifically concerning CBRN events have not been extensively undertaken. This paper in particular aims at proposing a methodological approach for studying macro-level economic impact profiles of biological incide

Two-miRNA-based finger-stick assay for estimation of absorbed ionizing radiation dose.

Nuclear radiation and radioactive fallouts resulting from a nuclear weapon detonation or reactor accidents could result in injuries affecting multiple sensitive organs, defined as acute radiation syndrome (ARS). Rapid and early estimation of injuries to sensitive organs using markers of radiation response is critical for identifying individuals who could potentially exhibit ARS; however, there are currently no biodosimetry assays approved for human use. We developed a sensitive microRNA (miRNA)-based blood test for radiation dose reconstruction with ±0.5 Gy resolution at critical dose range. R
